I noticed (and ignored) the lulu warning a few weeks ago. It'd be nice if they'd give some details.

edit: vv yes, exactly. I don't think it's too ridiculous to expect that. What vulnerability is exploited or what other means of delivery are used? I don't think this site check is actually comparing against my specific version of opera and security settings to verify that I, personally, would be infected.

Opera Turbo

I don't have time to try this now but I might later today.

So I just installed this on my laptop, which I frequently use on a tethered evdo connection, and from 20 minutes of browsing around, it is really loving impressive. Just looking at mostly-text sites like the forums, it's typically getting 3-3.5x compression, and it feels even faster than that.

Now the question is if/what they'll charge for it once it's past the test phase. Given the bandwidth it must use, I don't see how it could continue to be free, but then I'd think the same thing about opera mini.

Oh Opera Gurus, I have a weird issue.

Normally, when I run Opera I use "ctrl-h" to reduce it to a small tray icon instead of relaunching it all the time. When Opera is actually open this little icon stays there in the tray.

However, on my Laptop it suddenly stopped working a while ago (after the 9.6 update I think?). Now the icon goes away every time I restore Opera. It's not that big of an issue, but I find it odd and haven't been able to find a setting anywhere that controls this behavior. I even tried recopying all my settings files from my desktop but it still does it.

Ideas?
ctrl-alt-shift-H minimizes to tray now.

In 10.x, at least, if you go to preferences (ctrl-f12) -> advanced tab -> shortcuts, you can select 'opera 9.2 compatible' as the keyboard shortcut scheme, which makes ctrl-h work. You could also edit the default scheme -- the functions in question are both under 'application', with the action you're looking for being 'Hide Opera' and the existing "h ctrl" being 'Focus panel, "history"...'.

On my old laptop, the power adapter brick made a distinct buzzing corresponding to mouse movement/scrolling. Low enough that I never noticed it until I had it up on the desk right next to me in a quiet room, but it was amusing. If it were coming from the speakers themselves, I'd have been more annoyed.

When I click on a link (Opera Beta 10) for iTunes, I get a few popups resulting in the final one saying "No registered applicatoin for this extension."

How can I get Opera to handle iTunes links?

Preferences (ctrl-f12) -> 'advanced' tab -> 'programs'. If there's not already an entry for 'itms', click 'add' (if there is, 'edit').
Protocol: itms
Open with other application: C:\program files\itunes\itunes.exe (edit if necessary)
Parameter: /url

For me, itunes obviously regged 'itms://' with windows, since it automatically filled in that path (plus a "%1") in the 'default app' entry, but I get the 'no registered app' error if I use that option.

Just noticed the new look of the in-page search (ie, .keyword). Very cool.

The time lag between scroll wheel moving and the animation ending. Without smooth scroll the movement is done completely instantaneous without any need for any animation to go through, which means i can start reading faster. This helps in many situations, but is most strongly noticable when scrolling over big amounts of text where you're not sure whether you're at the right position, but also cannot use ctrl+f due to the fuzziness of what you're looking for.

Odd, I like smooth scrolling for exactly that same reason. With smooth scrolling, my eyes can track my position on the page upward and continue reading immediately, whereas with non-smoothed jumps, it takes a split second to lock on again.

Say, is there any Opera wizardry that would make a Speed Dial button open three different pages? Like if when I want some porn Business News I always want Asian Business News, Senior Business News, and Fisting Business News. Right now I need to occupy three Speed Dial entries with all three of my business news websites and click them all. Could I batch them and get all my business news in a tidy package?
Make a page saved locally that spawns two popups then redirects to the third site, and point the speed dial to that?

So let me get this straight. The mobile version of opera went to poo poo, (I switched to opera classic) and now the desktop one is going downhill too?
They're switching both to the new engine, so it's rebuilds all around. At least 12 and classic are still around for the meantime.

This may be the first step, though, toward my becoming the old guy who runs a 15 year old operating system because, "it works just loving fine."

But things like a notes panel should be possible, for example.
For a cheap workaround, you could just open a tab to 'data:text/html,<html contenteditable>' and pin it. (if tab pinning even exists anymore in 15; not running it yet)

Until Chrome or Firefox let me put the tab bar on the bottom of the window I sticking with Opera 12.

Seriously think about it, if your task bar in windows is at the bottom, why the gently caress would you have the tabs on the other side of the screen from that?

That was honestly the biggest sticking point for me, too, but after trying out O15, I finally undertook the arduous task a few days ago of transferring my passwords and searches to chrome. A few extensions and I have 90% of what I miss, and the tab syncing between my computers and phone is very handy. Toss in some nice features like gmail offline for my laptop, play music working, etc, and it's not bad at all.

Godspeed, Opera, it's been a great ~14 years.

I imagine it's like people who fill their cars--save the driver's seat--with a sea of trash. It's not worth your time or effort to question them. ("Why not? I have 80 cubic feet of space that sit otherwise unused, and I can run for years at a time without wasting seconds every day. I have no practical reason to empty it before it begins obstructing windows*.")
