Is anyone familiar with the Pioneer PL-71? Everything I've read about them seems like they are a winner but I had someone tell me that I should pretty much avoid non-quartz locked DD tables, which sounds kinda like bullshit to me. It's a pretty good looking table and would be a definite upgrade from my current one but I don't want to invest a couple of hundred dollars into a thing if I have any doubts about it (which that one dude has instilled in me).

Is there much difference going from a ~$50 preamp to $150ish, or is that just getting into audiophile nonsense territory? I have a TC-750 that seems fine as far as I can tell.

I went from an ART DJ Pre II or whatever they're called to a NAD 1240 (which seems to sell for about $100-150) and I think it sounds noticeably better. Plus it's way nicer to have volume, balance, treble, bass etc knobs to fiddle with if I want to.

Ask your local record stores if they have cleaning machines. One of the ones near me does it (for $15 a disc though :eyepop:)

I just got a new (old) turntable :woop:

It's nice but it's having some speed issues. Sometimes (irregularly, like once or twice per side edit: but it seems slightly worse on 45) its speed will drop pretty significantly for a couple of seconds. Is this something that can be fixed by "cleaning the pots" or whatever? I've never had a DD table before so I have no idea what I'm doing.

edit 2: also, the pitch control knobs seem, like, incredibly touchy. I adjust them a little bit and it does a lot of pitch shifting.

edit 3: and does anyone in Australia know any actual stores that sell ground cables?

help me goons :(

I just cleaned it based on this video (I didn't spray anything on the circuit board because it didn't have the same stuff though) and it seems to have worked fine for 45rpm but now it won't spin at all on 33rpm. Have I broken it :negative:

The strobe still turns on and stuff the motor just doesn't spin.

Keep trying. Sometimes it takes several applications. Do the power switch too. You probably loosened some gunk and now its breaking the circuit somewhere. Just gotta keep at it.

Yeah I just left it for a while and it's working now. Whew

My strobe light is being dodgy:

It only stays on for a second or two then flickers out. It comes back on when I blow on it, is it likely just a poor connection that I should check out more thoroughly? Or will the light itself be crap and need replacing

I pulled apart my technics sh8044 eq last night to clean all the dust and poo poo out of the band controls and it seems to have fixed the issue of it only outputting music to one channel intermittently and stopped the scratching sound when sliding the controls up and down :toot: looks way nicer too

kinda want to get myself a big old radio tuner now

I love the micro seikis. this dd40 is a pretty high end one but there are cheaper less premium models around with a similar aesthetic

I had one of these for a while and really liked it https://www.amazon.com/ART-DJPREII-..._a_1_fkmrnull_3

but then I found a used NAD locally for $80 and much prefer that (partly due to the extra controls, the sound is only marginally better)

i'm looking at buying a new stylus for my stanton 680 EE cartridge as mine is getting pretty obviously worn down. does anyone have any experience with 3rd party brands? stanton don't seem to make these anymore.

there's a significant price difference between brands (eg jico at $85 USD and pfanstiehl/EVG for $30 USD) but opinion seems mixed on both brands in forums like audiokarma where this cart is being discussed.

i'm assuming i should just buy the cheap option first and if it's crap try something else?

Man I have been actively chasing one of those Sansui tables for like 10+ years, I have never seen one come up for sale in Australia :(

does anyone here have experience with graphic EQs? I've got this Technics SH 8044 and the display is a bit dodgy. when it displays properly it's fine but it is always falling back to what looks like really low levels. gently tapping on it often brings it back up to where it should be  is this likely to just be a dodgy solder or something?

Wondering if someone could help me out. I was just given a Kenwood DP-J2070 100 Disc changer and it doesn't seem to be "grabbing" the cds from the slot. I was hoping to see if it was something obvious but it seems hifiengine has closed registration and my vinylengine login doesn't work for it. Can anyone with an account snag me the service manual?
