I did a thing today.

A brand new 2023 with 9 miles on it still in the delivery plastics. It was acquired new from a North Carolina Honda dealer in Sept of 2023 by a used dealer 45 minutes from me here in CT.

They very clearly had the intention to flip it, but they botched the timing and ended up sitting on it for 6+ months...until I came sniffing around. After 2-3 days of shrewd negotiating, I traded my Mk6 Golf towards it for a song and I feel like I made out really well.

I have 64 miles on the clock now, and almost immediately pulling off the lot to head home I instantly just felt this car is something special. I'm super happy and can't wait to DD this and enjoy it for what it is intended to do. Better photos to come, I promise.

e: that's one hell of a snipe

Type R snipes are welcomed and encouraged. Those are so cool. I think Honda did a great job on carrying over what a Type R civic is meant to be. If only dealers weren’t so dumb and botched that launch I think we would have seen even more of them. It’s gotta be the peak of Type R for the future too. Did you end up getting it for MSRP?

I feel as though I did, and I'm very content with where all the numbers netted out at the end of the day. Every other dealer I was negotiating with would only do a max of $5k for the Golf TDI and this dealer ended up offering $9k, because they needed to move this car. Using my special maths, if I subtract that crazy $4k difference in trade price (from all other dealers) directly from the price of the car, it brings it down to $44k. :downs:

As a former dealership finance manager, I very obviously appreciate that kind of boy math. I really like the new body style of the Type R, I would never have considered the gundam looking one as an adult but they really classed this one up.

Should have taken my own advice and bubble wrapped my front fascia. Did a bunch of hours on the interstate on Monday, went to wash the bugs off yesterday and was greeted with this:

Any advice on how to fix this/get this fixed that doesn't involve respraying the entire bumper?

Yeah I pretty much buy a paint pen for every car. Stone chips are poo poo but inevitable.

Got the Enkei wheels with RT660’s back on the NC yesterday now that winter is done, so I took it out for a good long drive today. What a manic little thing and I love it.

I mean, chips are one thing but whatever hit it gouged the plastic underneath pretty good, not sure how I feel about my ability to fill it in with touchup paint

It's time to establish a good relationship with a top tier body shop owner in your area, creating jobs & keeping your local bumper cover replacement economy thriving.

Touch up paint is probably the reasonable fix. You could have it repainted but it's expensive and the front fascia is always the first area that gets damage accumulation on a car and you're likely to have more damage in the future

Yea I was gonna say, touch up paint + PPF would probably be the most sensical route rather than truly fixing the bumper [and then applying PPF].

I can only imagine what the wait time is to get a whole new front piece from Turin. I'm sure its months.

If it was warranty work I'm sure that would be the only approved way to get the parts

Since it would be out of pocket I'd just hit up some some Alfa specific sites that have them in stock

I took a peek and found that Dr. Color Chip supports your color code for Verde Montreal. I had a decent experience applying this to my car before having it PPF'd. It is going to take multiple applications to fill in the chips to an almost-level point - at least enough to cover up all of the plastic/primer color underneath the chips, but I think it is worth it for the price (~$60-65).

Check out YouTube for some application tips - I generally filled in the chips, waited ~20 mins while the car was parked in a dry area (sun will help it cure quicker), then used their solvent to remove excess and reapply. To me, it was easier to work with than touch up paint that I have used in the past. Might be worth a shot. One downside is that the paint and clear are mixed together in their product, so it loses some luster versus traditional touch up paint + clear coat pens. A good body shop could also assist with applying paint and clear via OEM touch up products.

Replacing the bumper and having it painted would be insane. You're going to get more chips. Even with PPF.

edit 10: Went up to New Hampshire for the eclipse, have some pics:

I have an appointment on Friday with a body shop that got recommended to me by another body shop to see what they can do. I just ordered some Dr. Colorchip paint if for no other reason to fill in some other super tiny chips that would bother nobody but me.

If it wasn’t on the leading edge of that surface I wouldn’t have hesitated to give it a go myself, but of course it’s on a weird spot where you can’t just squeegee it in to get it level, that would be too easy.

Went exploring for a little bit in Southern Utah over spring break. This is just over the Utah/AZ border and pretty easily accessible. After hiking the Great Gallery last month I find myself wanting to become the guy that tracks down all of the pictograph panels in Utah to say "Yeah, I have been there and seen that in person".

Great photos. Lexus looks like a beast and hasn't aged much at all. And I wonder what all the symbols mean. I made out the sun and a pair of bighorn sheep. We sure those weren't imprinted with stencils and a lot of diesel smoke?
