Q: How do you get a TDI SportWagen out of the bottom of a mud infested corn field?

A: Drop the tire pressure, yank the fuse for the traction control, and get a couple of your friends an a bunch of random strangers to help push the bitch up the hill and gun it until it finds hard ground!

Then you park it in a safe spot, walk back down the hill and help other people get their cars out too.

Also a special shout-out goes to the girl who shamelessly redlined her Acura and sent up a stinging rooster tail of mud and fine gravel getting her car out. We were expecting to have to encourage her to goose it, but she needed no prompting whatsoever.

The guy in an AWD Mazda 6 making all the SUVs look bad was amusing too.

Sure, I'll bite...why would you drive a bunch of cars into a mud infested corn field in the first place? Or was it a dry corn field and you got caught in a sudden downpour?

This is where we were on Saturday: http://toughmudder.com/events/mid-atlantic-2012/

It was dry on the way in. We got caught in the rain just as we finished the course and by the time we showered, changed and I picked up my backpack the field was soaked and every car that tried to get out (most unsuccessfully at first) simply served to make the ground at the bottom of the hill even more rutted and soupy.

The field and the participant staging area was so torn up that they cancelled the 2nd day of the event: http://www.gazette.net/article/20120909/NEWS/709099999/1016/second-day-of-frederick-county-s-tough-mudder-canceled-due-to&template=gazette

What you're not seeing is the couple of hundred pounds of mud caked up under the frame rails, wheel wells, shock towers, jammed up in the cabin drain ports, etc. etc. etc. It took my buddy and I about two hours yesterday to wash, wipe and vacuum the car back into a state of cleanliness.

So I've had this truck for a while now, guess it's time to post now:

2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD

I got it with 75000 miles on the odometer in July 2017 100% stock.

Since then I've put 35000 miles on it by using it as my daily driver and adventure vehicle.

It's been to ten states and one Canadian province.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXiTLEIYBp4

Driving it can be occasionally challenging.

It's a cool vehicle but the really nifty part is the people that I've met along the way and made friends with. I was feeling pretty bummed a few years ago and kind of pushed away the few friends I had. Between the dogs and the adventuring I'm in a much better place now.

Yeah I do.

I'm lucky enough to have an 11 mile commute. I'm actually looking to pick up a small car to commute in to save on gas, add fun, and also enable me to take on projects on the truck that will take it off the road for longer periods of time such as fitting it for a second battery + solar array + charge controller to support longer trips into the back country.

Did some work on the Mini today:
- removed skid plate, hopefully temporarily
- troubleshot oil leak, suspect crank case seal
- installed new projector headlights
- installed replacement fog light housings because the old ones were thoroughly sun baked
- custom license plate!

...and took it for a rip around the county.

The Mini is back on the road with a new water pump and a full coolant system pressure test. The 4Runner just keeps on doing 4Runner things like being a daily driver when the Mini is broken (quite a bit this past six months), vacation and travel wagon, and building material hauler for home projects. To wit we loaded the truck with ~1100lbs of tile and flooring material and the suspension was ~vaguely amused~.

Someone on a Discord asked for a scale comparison with the 4Runner so here goes:

They're pretty much the same size...

...oh, oh my.

Guys. GUYS. I did something stupid again.

‘02 Mini Cooper S 6-speed. Alta 17% pulley, intake, 450cc injectors, RMW tune, some cat-back exhaust that I haven’t found a brand on yet, rear camber arms, front camber plates, Tein springs, poly motor mounts and control arm bushings, new cross-drilled and slotted rotors, rear calipers, pads, brand new 205/45/17 Hankook Ventus V12 tires and alignment.

I ordered two new front side markers , a new key fob shell, and a new plastic clip for the driver side door latch pin assembly. Amazingly they all disintegrated. I also dynamatted the under side of the dash pad to curb the rattle.

The car was serviced at the local Mini specialist/tuner which is literally 3/4 mile from my house, so I do feel pretty good about it. I’m gonna use it as a daily.

Congratulations on your new grocery getter slash go kart.

^^^ I dig it, droopy door handles and all.

Nothing special going on here, just saw interesting light and stopped to snap a picture. Knock on wood Mademoiselle Le Sketch is turning into a reliable daily. That process has only taken two years and several grand in repairs and upgrades. It’s sitting on a fully refreshed front suspension powered by Koni FSD shocks and poly bushings everywhere. The entire charge air system is pretty much new as is the mechanical bits of the cooling system.

What’s next? For one it has a leaky PCV and valve cover and it’s probably (definitely) on the factory VANOS solenoid and timing chain assembly. And at 120k miles over 13 years it’s, uh, due. Once that is done I’ll refresh the rear suspension plus add a 22mm sway bar. Then (next year) it’s getting decatted and tuned!

I love this stupid little go kart.

Awesome, did it also come with the original GP wheels? And has it rattled all the fillings out of your teeth yet?

Yep the owner kept all the original parts and they were part of the deal. I’m driving it back home to MD from TX with a very full trunk. The original wheels are ridiculously light, but they’re also impossible to fix (lots of magnesium) and $fuckyou to replace so they’re going on a shelf.

As far as driving on the road actually better than my R56 was because it is on rubber bushings (not poly) and the wheelbase is slightly longer. It is pretty deafening both from road noise and exhaust note so I threw in ear plugs for most of the drive today and that was a pro move.
