How do you find the ownership experience? I've got a 1.8T Jetta and for my next car have been heavily considering adding two cylinders and a turbo. Nightmarish? Expensive? Etc?

The 2.7T is pretty reliable and stout. The stock k03 turbos are a bit iffy and will fail somewhere between 100-150k miles, but that's just an excuse to go k04. The timing belt also needs to be done before 80k miles.

So just like the 1.8T basically. I'm assuming the timing belt is also a loving nightmare since VAG had something to do with it. (Just did mine for a tidy $700 sum, which sadly was a good deal with all the stuff you do at the same time as the belt.)

Personally, I'm absolutely IN LOVE with this car. I plan on driving it till it can't be driven anymore.

However, maintenance can be a pain in the rear end. The stock K03's aren't reliable at all and can go at any moment. Some keep truckin', and others just die. On my audi forum there is a B5 S4 owner with over 210,000 miles on stock K03's. I'm very close to NYC so I have access to a tuner who has very reasonable labor rates. To do a full stage 3 (pull motor and switch out turbos and clutch) install he wants around $1,500. If you do get this car, you might want to have some money set aside just in case something brakes. But, if you keep on top of maintenance and do all the small things when needed you shouldn't have a problem.

That being said, I still love my car.

Well consider my arm twisted, I'm now on the longterm hunt for a clean B5. I took a 4.2 S4 (B6? I don't know audi stuff besides B5) out and loved the poo poo out of it. I also love turbo lag (seriously) so that's got the older ones in higher priority for me, the V8 did make a lovely sound though.

Its the only way a real S4 would be, 6 speed.

If you need any help searching I'd be glad to give you a hand. The 4.2 is found in the B6 and B7. The B5 has the V6 Bi-Turbo. If you can, test drive a 2000-2002 S4 (that's the B5 S4 year range for the US market). You get lots of torque down low and with just a chip the power is bumped to 318 hp with 380 ft/lb of torque. Just for $500.

You won't regret buying this car. Just be aware that maintenance is important and can be costly.

Oh yea, Stage 3 pulls like a freight train! :D

I need to find one locally to get the girlfriend to give it a test drive, I'm about 16 months away from my next purchase if I'm responsible about it but she's shopping right now and found the Viggen we drove last week "too slow" and didn't like the clutch. Her budget is around 16K if she finds something she actually really likes and that seems to be the going rate for a clean S4 with normal mileage and the timing belt done. To get her enthusiastic about it I have to find her one to drive so she can see how she likes it though.

I've been rationalizing putting my Long Beaches back on early because of the nice weather lately, but one season left summer tires and random Montreal March snow don't get along, easily one of my favorite OEM VW wheels.

The closest thing I've seen to an 18" Long Beach was someone with the 18" Manhattan wheels off of the Touraeg with spacers and adaptors. Looked pretty good. They're essentially a more angular Long Beach. The only thing putting me off getting a set is what I can only imagine is the huge weight of the wheels.

Got to spend a week driving around in this thing my dad bought to mow some fields and do general around the property work. It's a 1975 Ford 3400 industrial tractor. It runs on gas not diesel oddly enough, it's got a 2.6L 3 cylinder with 48hp and 128lb/ft of torque at an eye watering 1350 rpm. 8 forward gears, 2 reverse and a two stage clutch for the PTO/driveline. It was fun to play around with and it mows a 6 acre field a hell of a lot faster than anything else we have.

There's also something satisfying about driving something so entirely mechanical and unforgiving, it's a unique little bastard to get started. Chokes and old carbs and all that but overall just a fun old toy for my dad to use and for me to get to play around with when I'm visiting.

^^Nice car! The snow adds to the picture, too. Curious what tyres it runs and if you switch for winter?

Thank you, and I run Kumho Wintercraft WP72's in the winter, got a set a few years back on the B9 A4 this replaced and honestly they're 80% of a blizzak in the snow for half the price, plus they're one of the quietest winters I've ever used on dry asphalt. Mercedes quoted me $2,400 CAD for Continental winters for this and the Kumho's were $990. Running winter tires here is borderline required, to the point where it will reduce your insurance premium and in some provinces is a legal requirement from November to April.

That E63S is very very nice. We get a little luckier in Canada for hatches and wagons than our freedom loving cousins to the south thankfully, haven't seen an E63s wagon in the wild yet though. I'm finding the transition from the Audi ecosystem to the new MBUX pretty easy honestly, there were a few days of moving around favourites and ambient lighting settings so it's still fun but less like a coke-fuelled rave orgy at night. My girlfriend is pretty pissed about no DVD's for roadtrips though, my A4 was a 2017 in the weird point in time where it had a DVD player and you could pretty easily bypass video in motion locks with a few coding changes.

One thing I love is having my entire music collection available. The Burmester sounds pretty sweet.

I'm literally sitting at my desk doing one CD at a time FLAC rips for this exact purpose, time consuming but worthwhile. The Burmester in the A35 isn't at the level of the bigger cars but it absolutely annihilates what my A4 had, I probably waste more money on my home hifi stuff than I do on cars so it was always a pain point in that car.

Ok I am back to liking the car, dealership sent a valet to get the car, left me with a new GLB for a couple days while they looked into my complaints. 4matic error was a software update, clicky blower fan was replaced, they agreed the sunroof wasn’t sealing level and replaced all of the seals, and the auto high beams had a faulty lens hood on the camera that tells it what to do, so since it’s been -15C the last week the windshield was fogging/frosting. All replaced, pretty painless and nice to not have to even drop the car off.

Mostly just nice to not be gaslit by a dealer.

Every other dealer I was negotiating with would only do a max of $5k for the Golf TDI and this dealer ended up offering $9k, because they needed to move this car. Using my special maths, if I subtract that crazy $4k difference in trade price (from all other dealers) directly from the price of the car, it brings it down to $44k.

As a former dealership finance manager, I very obviously appreciate that kind of boy math. I really like the new body style of the Type R, I would never have considered the gundam looking one as an adult but they really classed this one up.
