When chemical engineers go on record to say that global warming is impossible because there's no way the CO2 can heat up enough to make a difference, you just have to accept that some people are completely hosed in the head and hope they're never in a position to make policy. Lots of them aren't guilty of anything but would still be a pain to repatriate

I go on about facebook a lot but I think this exchange gives us a valuable insight into the mind of the incurious right-winger. It demonstrates, I think you'll agree, that these people have made their mind up and don't give a gently caress about anything that might contradict their initial impression. It's not even cognitive dissonance, it's simply ignoring information that doesn't support their poo poo-headed theory:

:eng101: rite good morning foolks a question for every one how would we all feel if our loved ones got hurt in the war against terrorism and went to hospital to get better only to find ur on the same ward as the buggers u tried to defend ur country against it beggers belief we try to kill them then we save there lives is this justice to our troops no it bollox more burden on the tax payer its a insult

:v: How would we feel if a terrorist killed our parents only to win the lottery and get elected president of the United States I don't know I don't lose sleep over stupid hypotheticals it's more productive trying to figure out how to benefit everyone as a whole. Saying, "You commited a crime that gets in the papers a lot, sorry, you don't get the same treatment as everyone else" doesn't benefit anyone, whatever your feelings on terrorism.

:eng101: oh :v: stop talking bollocks

:v: I really don't think you've thought through what you're saying. It's all well and good to suggest we indiscriminately kill people 'X' until you realize that one day it might be you trying to defend yourself against vastly unsympathetic people in an unfair justice system. One thing that tells me how little you know about why people ended up in GTMO is your comment, "so what if they r there its there own fault they could allways say no to terrorism and walk away from these arse holes we all have choices in life."

Do you know how most of these people ended up there in the first place? Take some time, use google, and really think about it before you answer.

:eng101: dont need to mate they were ccaught fair and square shooting at our troops or trying to bomb places

So it isn't about repatriation, these guys acutally think the GTMO detainees have been locked up for a good reason and giving them any kind of a fair trial is the same as well just read the above again.

All of those cartoons without exception are American. A word of advice, though: Some people get really pissy when they're corrected. Conservatives portrayed him as the liberals' Messiah and could only understand praise for Obama as worship to a deity. While many people didn't think that Obama would be an amazing president, most people recognized that his reaching the presidency was an historic moment in the nation's history, and that he, we already know, will always be an important figure in our history. (Really, I think that's what makes conservatives so bitter, knowing that Obama is already enshrined as one of the most important figured in this country's history, and as an agent for positive change, while their guy will be remembered for terrible incompetence, if at all.)

Now that for a lot of people the shock of it is wearing off, and they're thinking of Obama less like a figure in history and more like the a president with real duties, conservatives are interpreting this change in attitude from celebratory back to political and interpreting it as if the people have lost their confidence in him to fix the country, which they haven't, because they've finally seen that Obama isn't some ineffable, omnipotent savior, which they never thought he was.

The righties are also probably fixating on people like that dork who said THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME OUT TO SEE US to Obama. There are a few people who hero-worship him, but they aren't the majority any more than the majority of Bush voters in 2004 were the type to sing "Bush was Right".
