well, since some people had problems with my flash site ( http://mrfart.be ) here are my latest mixes: mrfart-chaostheory-1_78.jpg 2008-11-mrfart-chaostheory-1_78 - loads of hits, used on belgian radio station. First part has mostly funky beats, idm, garage and dubstep. Second half is more elektro and tech-house minded. download: http://mrfart.be/muziek/2008_11_mrfart_chaos-theory_1_78.mp3 tracklist: ------ mrfart-chaostheory-116a - made very fast, right before I left for dour festival (I needed something to listen to in the car) download: http://mrfart.be/muziek/2008_07_mrfart_chaos-theory_1_16a.mp3 http://mrfart.be/muziek/images/2008-07-mrfart-chaostheory-116a.jpg tracklist: http://mrfart.be/muziek/images/2008-07-mrfart-chaostheory-116a_back.jpg ------ mrfart-kyoto-hiroshima.jpg - made on a bullettrain from kyoto to hiroshima, later remixed with EQ and a couple of tracks added. I guess I wanted to proof that I could make a *serious* dj mix. Download this if you're more interested in strictly tech-house, techno and minimal. download: http://mrfart.be/muziek/2008_05_mrfart_kyoto-hiroshima.mp3 http://mrfart.be/muziek/images/2008-05-mrfart-kyoto-hiroshima.jpg tracklist: http://mrfart.be/muziek/images/2008-05-mrfart-kyoto-hiroshima_back.jpg ------ mrfart-chaos-theory-1_502b - a bit incongruous, I know. But loads of nice tracks in there. And even one I tried to make myself. download part 1: http://mrfart.be/muziek/2008_01_mrfart_chaos-theory_1_502b_part1.mp3 download part 2: http://mrfart.be/muziek/2008_01_mrfart_chaos-theory_1_502b_part2.mp3 http://mrfart.be/muziek/images/2008-01-mrfart-chaos-theory-1_502b.jpg tracklist: http://mrfart.be/muziek/images/2008-01-mrfart-chaos-theory-1_502b_back.jpg ------ meneer_konijn.jpg - still like this one. Loads of weird tracks, made as promo for one of my comic-stories download: http://mrfart.be/muziek/2007_08_meneer_konijn.mp3 http://mrfart.be/muziek/images/2007-08-meneer_konijn.jpg tracklist: http://mrfart.be/muziek/images/2007-08-meneer_konijn_back.jpg btw, I'm from brussels

Im not going to poo poo this thread up with any more discussion about how cool I apparently try to be. I don't mind your presentation, and really love the cover you made for the mix. The mixing also seems to be good, on the other hand, I really can't listen too much to this type of music anymore. I know its very popular right now and you'll probably do well with it. But I got to old for this "bumbercar/electronic fart stuff. At belgian festivals its been music like this the last two years, and afterwards its like I need some real techno or deep house like a lost soul in the desert needs water. But again, I'm a dinosaur.

Giant Robot Fight! posted:It would be a lot better if it were possible to search or view charts by genre/s, even Juno does that. I don't really enjoy trawling through loads of uncategorized releases either. Yeah, beatport charts are pretty bad in general. I like http://14tracks.com/ to learn totally new things. But its not really a chart site.

Haha, you've got to be kiddin' me. For some reason last night I started browsing through my french-house stuff etc from the late nineties when I started dj-ing. I pulled at least 2 records from your mix out of the shelves. I thought of making a valentine mix with them, mixing them with some funk. We'll see where that takes me. I remember how nice it was mixing these records. Kerk posted:Just threw together a classic house mix with some nu-disco stuff at the end. Let me know what you think! The whole mix was done on the spot, no pre planning so some transitions are a little shaky.

from my blog: 'This is a mix I originally made for my girlfriend on valentines day. However, I never gave it to her, because I didn't think it was good enough for her. But it's good enough for you, internet. You hear me internet, you SUCK. Anyway, this mix contains some old tracks that have some sort of romantic background for me, one more hosed up than the other. Also, it contains a lot of cheesy records and should not be listened to by people who are lactose-intolerant.' Click here for the full 800x800 image. tylertfb posted:I just found an old mix I did in 2005 of all shuffle-techno (it was like, a big 'thing' for a few months there) and re-uploaded it: I never knew it was called shuffle-techno to be honest. Nice mix, although that "shuffling" or whatever makes all these tracks sound a bit too much the same. At some point I was hoping you would drop a straight 4 to the floor techno-track in there But different times...

Alman posted:So I'm starting to build up my collection (since my dance/house/dubstep/drumnbass collection is pretty minimalist) in order to start doing some mixing. What are some essentials I should check out? Obviously I've got artists like Daft Punk, Justice, Pendulum, Chase and Status, Subfocus, and Deadmau5, but I'm sure there are other albums that are pretty much essentials? Please, the world doesn't need just another beatport top 10 chart dj. Please learn some of the music history to understand where the music you're listening to today is coming from. Motown, funk, early disco,... then chicago house, early detroit techno. If you're into dnb: rave, jungle, Uk bass, dub... Anyway, I don't want to sound arrogant by posting this. But by starting in the early days and working your way to the present you'll find a lot of tracks that others don't, and you'll also start liking stuff that you would never have liked before. And you'll probably lose interest in 80% of the stuff you're currently playing. Again, I don't want to sound like a dick, really trying to help.

Symptomless Coma posted:Depends - the pleasure of recognition is something you can't underestimate. If you're about having fun (and granted, sometimes I'm not and I really do just want to explore), well known 'big tunes' serve a great bridges towards what you really want people to hear. I have KRK rokit 5 sudio monitors with an extra subwoofer. The subwoofer is turned at -25 dB out of fear of destroying my floor. Anyway, soundwise i've been told that it's usually better to buy a bit smaller speakers than you were planning and use the saved money on a sub. Rokit 5s might be a bit small for your 50 people parties (although I used them for 30 something parties). The best way will always be to go listen for yourself in a store.

geeves posted:I sometimes think the Top 10 list on Beatport is almost a disservice. That said, don't be afraid to buy or play a track just because it's in the top 10. If I like a track, I'm buying it; only because I'll know when to use it in my set and make it work - regardless of how popular it may be. But rarely is there something in the Top 10 that I even like. I like the juno playlist system. I can play the 100 newest tracks of a genre and just do something else while it plays. But to be honest I never shop there anymore. It's usually boomkat, bleep or zero-inch. And clone.nl just has some of the best records out there, but they only sell vinyl/cd. i don't know why people go to beatport. It's more expensive, the player isn't that good and the good content is harder to find within the endless amount of crap. I hope bandcamp will really become something in the future. If they add a search function and a basic homepage it could become the best thing out there.

vanilla slimfast posted:They have a poo poo-ton of high-profile labels locked into exclusive deals. So unless you're willing to wait 4-8 weeks for said labels' newest tracks, it's the only game in town for a lot of music Yeah, unfortunately that's true. I was just about to talk about this with a friend (label-owner of curle). 2,50 euro per track of his latest release (and that's just the mp3), and no option to buy it somewhere else. Full releases are sometimes literally cheaper on vinyl. It seems very unfair and it's very frustrating for sure.

I would also be rather surprised if that worked. If I was a barmanager i would also be suspicious when given a 'minimix'. I don't like the whole minimix thing to begin with. Being able to mix 6 tracks doesn't make you a dj (I'm not saying you can't do more). But it's very hard to get into bars/clubs if you're unknown. Had the same problem, and by the time I got a little fame I was so tired of doing it I quit. Anyway, the djscene is a connection/friend type of scene, whether you like it or not (I really don't). And you'll have a lot more succes going to clubs and talking to some of these guys in person. I read an article recently about how hard it has become to just get noticed as a good dj. Most of the guys who get famous fast do it because they released some stuff themselfes (often nothing to write home about). But this has very little to do with being a good dj. Good luck, though (I mean that).

Vernacular posted:Currently shopping for a new laptop to DJ with, and an expensive Mac is totally out the question. Any suggestions for a solid PC? The external soundunit is more important than the computer you use. Definately when it comes to soundquality. You need balanced sound. Of course, if you're dj-ing with finalscratch or serato, you don't have a choice. I used to dj with a pc, only problem compared to mac was the small firewire port, which doesn't give the soundunit power, and you need one more adapter on stage. Stability-wise, I did have some problems, most related to drivers (gently caress m-audio). That said, I've seen almost an equal amount of problems with macs on stage. But if I did it all again, I would go for a mac probably, for the little things like the firewire, and lack of midi problems (if your midi controller gets disconnected and you connect it again, it will work immediately again, not so with windows). But again ,these are of no importance if you're a serato/finalscratch dj (I think).

Bought mkIIs from my cousin, and ordered a mixer online (second hand, a rare valve amp thing they don't make anymore). The mixer got lost in the mail. They finally delivered it today.
