the problem here is just rampant ignorance with the underlying problem being the cultural conflict currently being waged against reason and objective knowledge that is propagated by the people who would stand to lose the most if everyone started thinking and actually knew what was going on, but yea screw those dumb kids am i rite? if we were in their positions, we totally wouldn't be like them because we're just better people than they are based on magical non-hereditary, non-environmental factors

if you don't blame poor people for being born into poor families and poor economic conditions, how can you blame these kids for being born into a retarded culture and families with lovely ideologies?

sorry im just feeling antagonistic

edit: just because they can read, write, and do a little math doesn't mean they're educated on matters of importance. whoever was supposed to teach these kids how to think has failed miserably. read the quotes.

because they've had every opportunity to open their eyes to the reality of the suffering around them and probably the best educations money can buy; instead they choose to retain and propagate the beliefs and values that will ensure their famlies' wealth and privilege and power is maintained and protected. they don't give a poo poo about anything other them themselves, especially not the poor folks they mislead into thinking they have needs and desires in common.

of course this is easier to say for those of us who haven't had to risk becoming estranged from our entire families and support systems in order to hold the views that we currently have. maybe some converts from conservative families could weigh in here, because i'm honestly interested to know what it is that causes people to break the cycle of willful ignorance so that we could maybe focus on doing that rather than treating them like subhuman scum (because that honestly doesn't seem to work so well)

I'd like to think there's a little voice inside each of them that makes them feel ashamed.

i'd like to think so too, but talking in depth to people with this kind of mindset reveals layers and layers of rationalizations. it's very rare to come across people who don't believe they are good, and if they don't, then there are usually rationalizations for why it doesn't matter or how do you define "good" anyway or nobody is really good, so why bother

Most Americans choose to ignore the reality of the lives of others and focus only on themselves

so why is this? are you saying that this is natural for humans to do, or that americans are somehow different from other people in ways not related to culture or heredity?

Why would it not be related to culture? for the past 90 years Americans have been increasingly raised with a sense that they should follow their own selfish interests rather than the interests of society. Just because many of us are intelligent enough to realize what the game is rather than to play it doesn't mean it's not being played.

a normal functioning adult who has had access to education and newspapers should be able to put two and two together.

this sounds a lot like that "an adult with access to welfare and public libraries should be able to pull himself up by his boostraps" line, and saying that they "should be able" to do it is an interesting way of phrasing it. i'm mostly interested in why they don't, in fact, do it and think there is more here to try to dig into without falling back on the tired liberal admonitions about the responsibility people have to one another and stupid americans living in ignorance, but we'll just keep going around in circles like this unless anyone else has some ideas to add
