Nice, thanks. I like Earth but haven't dove deep enough into them yet. The Dylan Carsons track is good poo poo too but a lot fuzzier than I want right now. SUSS is closer to what I was thinking of, will definitely be giving them some play today.

This is near bang-on what I was thinking of. I really need to watch the movie. This is also kind of funny to me because I just realized that the trend in tv scores and credits music that's being lampooned in this Portlandia sketch probably originated in part with Ry Cooder's music, maybe even the Paris, TX soundtrack.

Or this:

TLDL: Music that you can space out to but also find deeply emotional. See Campfire Songs as well. It doesn't have to have lyrics or be guitar focused but I don't mind if it is. I appreciate vocals that aren't very discernable. Lo-fi and live stuff is good too. The band Grouper comes to mind but her music is a little bit too bleak/dour for what I'm trying to find.

I've been listening a lot to Windhand and what I'm enjoying is the distorted instruments and the slow rhythm, but that it's also pretty melodic. The closest genre I can think of is the doom or stoner metal, but I don't mind if there are synthesizers or electronic elements in there. I just want that slowww, dark and heavy feeling.

Look into funeral doom and drone metal. That's where you get the really slow, really heavy riffs and a general atmosphere similar to those songs.

There's also a genre known as psychedelic doom metal, but that tends to be a little faster and less heavy.

I'm trying to come up with track references for the musician for a game I'm making. The track they're working on next plays while the pre-mission cutscene plays -- think like the briefings in Starcraft. This is a naval combat game, though, so the tracks I've found so far are:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0E6OSFNrgw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEiSzqkRMow

Can anyone recommend other tracks in a similar style? The trick is that I'm looking for a versatile track that can be applied to a wide range of contexts (both storywise and emotionally), which means it'll necessarily be fairly generic.

Thanks, yeah, that's similar in tone to what I'm looking for. The main thing I was worried about is making sure the right emotions are present -- my musician did a draft piece as part of their demo reel that had this huge feeling of Pending Major Events that just wouldn't be suitable for missions like "go patrol this stretch of water and kill the commerce raiders that have been bugging our merchant fleet". Something that conveys a feeling of readiness and courage without being super amped up about it is way more appropriate.

Purity Ring is a bit cleaner, but it's still dreamy and these lyrics were def written in some fever dream

some of the stuff on the album also has a definite synth-pop and italo-disco vibe. that seems to be what the label (italians do it better) is focused on. I only found out about this because of the soundtrack from drive. I definitely need stuff that has a lot of electronic elements in it.
