I've been getting back into Smashing Pumpkins lately and I love the gently caress out of their first two albums, Gish and Siamese Dream

Can anyone recommend some more of that early 90s rock sound, the one that's a bit more raw-feeling, very clearly inspired by the 70s but developing on it further?

Basically if I had some bands that made a ton of albums similar in style to those two albums I would be really happy

Check out Blind Melon. They had their one big hit everyone knows (No Rain) but they are a pretty underrated band otherwise.

I'm looking for blues recs including basically any sub-genre that includes. I get my wife's dad some music for Christmas every year and want to get him something a bit more blues-y because that's what he really likes. Previous years I've gotten him Gary Clark Jr and early Black Keys which he's liked. I know he really likes stuff like SRV and Joe Bonnamassa but also Robert Johnson and Led Zeppelin so it's not totally limited to bluesdad dudes. He also heard me listening to Radio Moscow and Clutch recently and said they sounded good.

For more recent artists I'd say stuff like James Hunter / James Hunter Six, JD McPherson, Alabama Shakes, Curtis Salgado, Barrence Whitfield & the Savages etc.

As far as classic artists go, I'd recommend Junior Wells (definitive album is his first one: Hoodoo Man Blues), Magic Sam, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and there's this great compilation called Chicago/The Blues/Today! which was released in three volumes back in 1966 or so and has a whole bunch of great performances by classic Chicago bluesmen.

Pacific Gas and Electric were a band I like a lot. They had blues rock riffs, a soul vocalist fronting them and occasionally horns and even gospel backing vocals. Everything I like, basically.

I'm looking for something a little specific, but hopefully y'all can point me in the right direction. I'm really in love with Boris' "Flood," specifically the second section (link). I'm a big fan of ambient/electronic music (to give an idea of the angle I'm coming from and my tastes), and was wondering if there is more rock music in this vein (muted/absent drums, pleasant chords/melody, maybe a little fuzzy and reverb-heavy), and what might be a good road to go down in finding more of it.

i liked the other recommendations, and i think the track you linked sounded a lot like a cross between early Tortoise and Duster. you could also try Mazzy Star, Red House Painters, Radar Bros., Spacemen 3, For Carnation, and Windsor for the Derby.

Empire! Empire! are very similar to AF. They have very high pitched vocals but the delivery is more like Kinsella’s.
Into It. Over It. and the Mike Kinsella-featuring side project Their / They’re / There might fit the bill.
Prawn and the most recent Pianos Become the Teeth album as well.

For Current 93 you probably want to check out Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre, maybe also Swastikas For Noddy(although I'm not a huge fan of that one myself), Horsey, and Earth Covers Earth. He uses the 'neofolk' sound through most of the 90s. The Myrninrest side project is also very good and has a similar sound. In terms of other projects you probably want to listen to Sol Invictus, since they were the other most important band in that scene along with C93 and DiJ (although note that Tony Wakeford's vocals are an acquired taste). The early albums are kind of barebones and you can hear the post punk influences, and then the material gets more lush(and probably closer to what you want) as time goes on. Their best album is In The Rain. Since you mentioned Dead can Dance I think you should also listen to The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud, even though they're a bit different from most other bands with the 'neofolk' label, because they're excellent.

I'm looking for rock music that makes use of an acoustic guitar. It doesn't have to be all acoustic, and it doesn't necessarily need to be super heavy. I'm thinking like the Alice in Chains albums Sap and Jar of Flies - acoustic with some electric, and definitely rock. Are there any bands that ape that sound?

The Eagles and Bob Seger, I guess. Counting Crows is a good one as well. The Mountain Goats are less rock, but I would highly suggest checking out their album, The Sunset Tree.

Violent Femmes is rock, actually is all acoustic iirc, but doesn't sound much like AiC. They have more of an indie / punk vibe.

Hellblazer187
Oct 12, 2003

Thanks! I'll check out all of those. I mean I know the Eagles and Bob Seger songs that have been on the radio, and that one Violent Femmes song that actually isn't about Masturbation but everyone thinks it is (or something). But I'll go deeper into the catalog of all of those. Never heard of the Mountain Goats, so I'll check them out too. I'm just kind of surprised nobody really aped that kind of dark acoustic rock sound that came out of the AiC and Nirvana unplugged records, since those were such hits. I guess that only works when it works, though.

Edit: I just looked up MG on youtube. This song is a few years old but "I'm going to make it through this year if it kills me" is a pretty relevant lyric for Dec 31 2017.

The closest thing to AIC I can think of is some of Dax Riggs' post-Acid Bath projects but I don't recall if there's much acoustic stuff in it. Specific Acid Bath songs actually fit too but mostly they were a sludge metal band.

I was going to post some but apparently they aren't on YouTube in addition to not being on streaming services?

Not acoustic but kinda gives that vibe, maybe try some Pinback? It's not as melancholy as AIC but kinda has that feel of metal riffs but played without distortion/unplugged vibe.

Sonny Knight & the Lakers would be my number one recommendation for that.

In that category, I also enjoy Charles Wright, Smoove & Turrell, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Ralph "Soul" Jackson, Lady Wray, Nick Waterhouse, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, the Excitements and the Butanes.

One thing I'd recommend doing is going onto the BBC Radio 6Music site, finding the Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show and checking out his playlists, because they're always a good way to discover new music.

I'm not quite sure how to interpret this, but maybe Future Sound of London - Dead Cities? Track 1 isn't really indicative of the entire album so listen to a few tracks. My Kingdom is a personal favorite of mine but it's really a "listen to the entire album" kind of album.
