Awesome, thank you all. I still need to get to the Miles Davis, Trent Reznor, and Fabio Frizzi ones, but I listened to all of Suspiria and Lykantropen Themes and bits of the other stuff. All of that is exactly what I was looking for.

Funnily enough I just saw Akira for the first time a few weeks ago and was thinking I wanted to listen to the soundtrack some more.

I'm looking for more "heavy" or rock based songs with disco/four on the floor beats.

Some suggestions of stuff I'm talking about would be I Ain't Hiding by the Black Crowes, I Was Made For Loving You by Kiss, the chorus of Closer by NIN, etc.

A lot of Sleater-Kinney songs almost fit - Hurry on Home, Oh!, Dance Song '97, A New Wave, Fangless. Might not be heavy enough though. Hurry on Home is probably the closest fit.

What's some good music to get punched in the face by? No particular genre, I think I'm looking more for... 'relentless intensity'? I know that's vague. Looking in my library, Crass and White Lung are good. Pharmakon does it as well. Oneida's "Sheets of Easter" is a very specific example, too. But even admittedly milder stuff like Preoccupations (especially the debut) sort of ticks the box for me, so it's not necessarily about loudness or harshness, though I reckon that probably helps. Any ideas?

edit: I should maybe say I'm not super into metal, that sort of seems the obvious place to go to. I might be open to the slower, sludgier stuff if the vocals aren't super growly, though.

There's a lot of excellent power electronics out there if you like Pharmakon, she's very good but not by any means unique for the genre. Some classic and contemporary examples: Grunt, Puce Mary, Linekraft, old Sutcliffe Jugend, new Sutcliffe Jugend, Genocide Organ, Sick Seed. If you just want really intense stuff maybe you'd like some harsh noise or possibly some free jazz but that has way less structure than anything you've mentioned so ymmv.

I am inundated! Thanks everyone. Some of these I indeed already know and like (Swans, Boris, June of 44, Big Black, some of the hardcore stuff; Lightning Bolt especially 100% fit the bill and I somehow missed them when going over my library, so it's a good reminder) but most I don't so I'm looking forward to going through all of it.

A human heart posted:

I definitely don't need structure so if you have some artists in mind do throw them at me, I'm into it. It's more about the mood / effect of the music, which I recognize is a vague and personal thing so I imagine some of it will stick and some of it won't.

I think just about the only album from that 70s-80s post-punk era that really hooked me was this heat's deceit. Oh, and i heard cardiacs for the first time this year and they blew me away

so i've been thinking about music a lot this weekend and feeling self-indulgent, so i made a collage of my all time top albums in topster.

it gave me an idea for a thing we could do itt: post your top whatever (you can limit it to year/decade if you want, but i'm not) and try to recommend albums to other people based on their lists. i don't see this being a competition but try to guess something the poster hasn't given a shot yet. i dont want this to just become everyone posts their own into the void, so i'd like to have a rule that in order to post yours, you need to respond to someone else's with some kinda recommendation. i'll start with mine and i promise to respond to at least the first couple to get things going. mine's roughly ranked by row but not column.
