Secretly force socialism, communism and imperialism types of government onto the people of the United States of America.

I'm still getting into country myself, and I came to OCMS and Trampled By Turtles by way of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, as recommended in the post above, as well as Jay Farrar's solo stuff, but also the Old 97's - they are definitely upbeat and engaging. I may have a soft spot in my heart for them out of sentimental reasons, so your mileage may vary.

Also, some of Steve Earle's stuff might fit the bill. Copperhead Road and Transcendental Blues are what I'm most familiar with.

Posted this in the country thread, but it's a little slow so I figured I would get more responses here.

What are some folk/bluegrass songs that are about drugs?

So far I've got: Codeine by Trampled by Turtles, Cocaine Blues, OCMS's Methamphetamine and that's about it.

Oxycontin Blues by Steve Earle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs8K39u72SI Dragonette is largely fairly energetic and while not full-synth to the level that someone like Ladyhawke is the music is still pretty synthy depending on the song. Most of Fixin to Thrill (the album) is energetic, the title track just a good representation of her music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2hvkiuxRAE Peaches you almost certainly have heard of, and while a lot of her music isn't necessarily high tempo, this song is pretty great if you just need a steady beat to push you onward.

to add on to that

this remix of one of Dragonette's better tracks is bangin

Does anyone have any recs for music related podcasts? I've recently gotten more interested in podcasts while I'm at work instead of the usual tunes.

I listen to pretty much any kind of electric guitar based music (particularly under the metal and punk umbrellas) as well as hip-hop. I was digging Pitchfork's Insight Out with Run the Jewels last night.

Song Exploder is a good one. The host talks to a wide range of musicians about how they made a particular song. It can get very technical (at least, it seems technical to a layman like me) but they will also discuss how lyrics came up, what they mean, that sort of thing.

NPR's All Songs Considered is good if you want a weekly show to hear new tracks. Musically, it's what you'd expect from NPR.

KCRW's Top Tune is also a good. Every morning there's just a new track. Pretty eclectic.

Year Zero was not a terrible concept album, and had some decent tracks. Ringing endorsement, I know.

can i get some recommendations for ebm/electro-industrial? i like neon judgement, front 242, crash course in science, dance-era cabaret voltaire, fad gadget, and lots of stuff on minimal wave.

the closer it is to like ectomorph / drexciya style electro the better e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoJd6to1T7U

You should pop into the Electro-Industrial thread for some recommendations in the first few pages, and it's an active thread, so you'd get some extensive answers if you ask. I'm sure they could use a break from discussing which era of KMFDM is the best.

If you like Carpenter Brut, try Perturbator. Former black metal guitarist who started making cyberpunky synthwave stuff. Has done some stuff with Carpenter Brut.

Also HEALTH. Especially the album DEATH MAGIC.

For more old school sounding industrial (Skinny Puppy ish) try Statiqbloom.

3TEETH, especially their album EXECUTE.EXE. Industrial metal.

More rap oriented, MF DOOM maybe. Definitely more light-hearted/tongue-in-cheek but in a similar vein to RTJ.

definitely more light-hearted but still frequently deeply political, Run the Jewels 2 & 3

also a bunch of Swet Shop Boys stuff takes a political tack, mostly addressing anti-Muslim profiling

Brother Ali as well, though stylistically very different

might be a bit too much more variety but my work/background music playlist is just blip-bloopy videogame music like Ben Prunty's soundtrack for FTL and scntfc's soundtrack to Oxenfree. those two might fit what you're looking for.

edit: also, Download (solo project by cevin key of skinny puppy) fits squarely into atmospheric electronic/IDM. the album III in particular (I think, it's been years since I listened to it fully) is probably your best bet, but Eyes of Stanley Pain, Furnace, and Effector all have tracks that may scratch your itch.

I've found the Ethiopian rapper Tommy Cash to be a perfectly good substitute for Die Antwoord once their shittiness was brought out into the open. Cash has a similar vocal style to Ninja, and is also fairly ... uhhh.... out there artistically. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ihsAv08Pi8

To loop back to pop/indie with female vocalists, he's has also done some stuff with Charli XCX (who Hooplah mentioned off-handedly) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxnFaq5SaqI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK3mbxs7IOU, and to Boba Pearl, I'd say check out her catalog if you're not that familiar outside of her big hits (Boom Clap and Break the Rules being the stupidly popular stuff). At this point she's doing a lot of hyperpop stuff at this point and collaborating with a ton of interesting artists, particularly queer/LGBTQ+ and poc. From listening to a bit of what you posted you liked I think you might find something agreeable in there.

Also, Caroline Polachek (formerly of the band Chairlift) may fit the bill as well. Newer solo stuff has a sort of ethereal gothic quality without being slow and mopey.

One of the artists I follow on Bandcamp (Saltillo) send a message saying that their label "Artoffact Records" made all of his albums free/pay what you want on Bandcamp. I followed the link, and then went to the label's page, and it seems like a lot of the artists are doing the same. However, I have no idea who any of these bands are, or if they're worth checking out. Does anyone have anything to say about the follow bands? If they're any good/my style, I figured I'd toss them a buck an album or something.

  • Ayria - goth/darkwave with vaguely pop influences
  • WINGTIPS - 2021 album "Cutting Room Floor" made some best end of year lists of industrial critics
  • LEATHERS - one or two of their tracks has come up in mixes I've heard. decent.
  • V▲LH▲LL - heard them years ago, vaguely witchhouse?
  • Bootblacks - another fresh goth/industrial outfit that has been getting good buzz lately
  • KANGA - very good. "You and I Will Never Die" and her self titled album both have some bangers
  • cEvin Key - the weird blip-bloop IDM side of Skinny Puppy
  • Cyberaktif - another cEvin Key project iirc
  • Front Line Assembly - more old school classic industrial. Tactical Neural Implant is the key album if they have it. Later stuff is divisive in terms of quality.
  • 3TEETH - new industrial metal act that is quite good. imo the first two albums (selftitled and "shutdown.exe") are the really good stuff. "Metawar" was fairly meh

added in comments on what i'm familiar with

edit: totally missed that Seeming is on the list. I like his stuff a lot. "the Birdwatcher's guide to atrocity" is a very interesting album.

Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, Caitlin Rose, Paul Cauthen, Orville Peck, and Steve Earle all broadly hit something in the alt country vein that you're looking for.
