Thanks, will look into it! For some reason I've always automatically assumed Bluegrass to be a subgenre of Blues (which I can't stand most of the time), and because of that I never thought to look it up. How stupid is that.

Also, check out the album Nickel Creek - Why Should The Fire Die?. It's not instrumental, but it's amazing bluegrass/folk music and you'll probably love it.

Edit: While I'm at it, where should I start with the jam band genre? All I've got is Phish's Story of a Ghost album, and them doing Remain In Light live.

I've fallen hard for prog/alt rock the past few years, but I fear I've run out of bands. Thus far I have greatly enjoyed most everything by The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, Karmakanic, Pink Floyd, and In the Court of the Crimson King, but not much of King Crimson's other work. I haven't been able to find another band I could get into for months. Any suggestions?

Ever heard of math rock? It's like Prog Rock's more experimental cousin. Try out Tera Melos and Hella. Hella's drummer (Zach Hill) has actually collaborated with The Mars Volta before.

I'm looking for bands that primarily do covers in an unusual style like The Baseballs (but it can be any genre) but not to the point of parody. Recommendaions of things like Pop goes Punk would be good too.

Iron Horse does awesome bluegrass tribute albums.

I don't know if this exists, but maybe you metalheads can help me. I really like the musical aspects of death metal, but I hate the harsh vocals. For example, I love Graveworm's cover of Losing My Religion, but the cookie monster and halloween witch singing ruin it for me. I'm looking for bands that sound like Graveworm, Amon Amarth, etc, but with clean vocals like Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, or other more symphonic metal bands.

I started out this way. Check out Mercenary - Architect of Lies, it has some rough vocals but it's mostly awesome clean vocals and it's a pretty good way to start getting used to a little bit of rough vocals, plus it's just an awesome death/power metal album.

Check out Avishai Cohen - Continuo, it's one of my favorite albums. I'm not sure how close it is to Metheny because it's been a while since I listened to him but it's worth checking out regardless.

I've been looking for a really specific type of music and maybe you guys can help. I love the hell out of singers with a pretty drat high, sorta wobbly range, and I've been digging on sorta caffeinated/giddy weird rock. Pandora's been very little help finding stuff like this.

I know these are pretty vastly different examples but hopefully you can see the similar strain I'm getting at, I'm definitely open to stuff similar to anything here.

The Mae Shi - HLLLYH is right up your alley. They're from the same scene as Abe Vigoda ("The Smell") and they're loving awesome. Make sure to get that album in particular, their earlier stuff is really loving weird and, while good, doesn't really match what you're looking for like HLLLYH does.

This is a bit vague but I've been listening to a lot of Bob Dylan lately and I want more of the same style(hippie-ish music?) any recommendations?

The Tallest Man On Earth - Shallow Grave gets compared to Dylan a lot. I honestly don't listen to Dylan at all but Tallest Man is completely awesome so you really can't go wrong checking him out either way.

IMHO This Is Boston Not L.A is the quintessential comp, but that is up for dispute.

Honestly I listened to the Boston Not L.A. comp recently and thought it was pretty bad, but I'll give it at least one more shot before I write it off completely. I'll definitely check out Minor Threat / Black Flag / Descendants also, thanks a lot to you and Oatmeal for the recommendations.

Does anyone know some good songs that feature both male and female vocals? I am not particular about the genre.

Stars - Set Yourself On Fire. The whole album.

While that is a fantastic album and song it's odd you picked that song as it only features Amy Milan singing, in fact there are quite a number of tracks in which only one singer sings, or that one sings and one sings and provides very minimal backing vocals.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55FMOJMhV9s is an example of them both singing on Set Yourself On Fire.

The previous album (Heart) has more with them both singing however and is just as good if not better in my opinion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWhI-YurW3E as an example.

Yeah, I just kinda picked a random song and then realized I hosed up so I went back and edited it.

If you haven't heard of Non-Prophets, it was a duo that Sage Francis did with a guy named Joe Beats. They had one album, Hope, and it's loving amazing.

Where's a good place to start with Bluegrass? I'm a big fan of Nickel Creek and I always enjoy my college radio station's bluegrass show, but beyond that I really don't know much. Normally my taste is really all over the place, so maybe someone can just suggest some basics to start with?

For The Dismemberment Plan, start with Emergency & I then get Change and ...Is Terrified.

What, no love for !? It may be more raw than the rest of their albums but it's still awesome.

But yeah you should start with Emergency & I and/or Change, then get the rest if(when) you dig it.

Can anyone recommend me more tracks/albums that feature lo-fi singers providing their own backing vocals? A few examples I like are: Tonstartssbandht, Grouper and Doseone (the tail-end of this sample).

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah do stuff like this a lot and it's awesome. The only thing is their singer's got a pretty weird voice, so sometimes that can take some getting used to.

Example: The chorus of this song at around 0:40 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTxYlkAguoY&feature=related

I love The Streets' first record, Original Pirate Material, and am wondering if people can recommend me more stuff in that vein? Obviously his manner of rapping is extremely unique, but I'm talking more about the general vibe of the record. I know it traces back to UK Garage, but that's absolutely all I know - so maybe I'm looking for an intro to that genre in general?

I'm looking for some nice ambient music to listen through my headphones whilst I'm reading or working. I've been using Brian Eno's 'Music for Airports' and the Blade Runner soundtrack for a while, so anything else like that would be greatly appreciated.

Eluvium - Talk Through The Trees is the perfect album for this. It's beautiful, uses a full range of frequencies, and extremely repetitive.

Tubelord have a similar big vocal harmonies and energetic punk-influenced not-punk rock thing going on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoYAKYDawxc

Also Make Believe are a really off-kilter indie rock band with weird vocals, this guy kinda splits the difference between the later mae shi singer and frank black style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8R_7sqpQgI

Can anyone recommend songs similar to Tourette's by Nirvana?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuDEbWeFvx4

I don't really like Nirvana's other stuff and I usually don't like harsh, thrashy vocals either, so I'm not sure what it is that draws me in to this one so much. I think I'm looking for something simple and harsh, but not "overly dark" if that makes any sense.

Make Believe is very cool. They are more artsy than Nirvana but the vocals are awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_1cG4__7F8
