Lately I've been really jonesing out on lyric-centered, contemporary folk/rock 'ala Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, The Mountain Goats, and The Good Life. I don't usually go for the acoustic-dude-on-guitar bit, but inexplicably as of late I just want some storytelling, simple songs with a stark effect. The ideal point of reference for this is probably The Magnetic Fields - Charm of the Highway Strip. If you haven't heard it, it was Stephen Merrit's attempt at a "country" album and I think its absolutely haunting. I want something without too much of a "full band sound." Any ideas?

Oh and not Ryan Adams.

You might like Will Oldham. Try Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I See A Darkness, Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Master & Everyone and Palace Brothers - There Is No One What Will Take Care of You.

Jason Molina - Let Me Go Let Me Go Let Me Go is really good too.

I am really into The National, and was wondering what other bands people would recommend? I have heard suggestions of Elbow, so I guess what albums should I start with for them?

i guess you're looking for 'dark' indie rock or whatever, so try:

Editors - The Back Room
The Black Heart Procession - 2
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
The Red Painting - Your tears Are Warning Signs

Can anybody recommend more bands along the lines of Sixteen Horsepower, Woven Hand, and Murder By Death? I really dig on the sort of dark traditional sound, like the apocalypse happening in the old west or whatever. Anything with a similar sound or vibe would be great. I also really enjoy Beirut, so I guess more along those lines would be fine too.

Thanks!

I am trying to find some Francophone music that is nice and kind of mellow. An example would be Carla Bruni maybe mixed with the Amelie soundtrack. Thats a bad description, but essentially something light, maybe some accordion, and a nice smooth voice or voices singing in French. I tried using lastFM to find similar artists but the results returned were all anglophone.

My purpose is two fold: Firstly, I want some nice background music that I can write papers to without distracting me because I can't understand the language. Second, I will be taking up French soon and it would be nice to have something that, when I am ready, I can start to pick out words from in a language I will be learning. Anyone have some artists I should be on the look out for?

Where to go after Elliott Smith? His music makes me want to cry - in a good way. I'm already a huge fan of The Shins, Iron and Wine, and Sufjan Stevens, so I'm not exactly sure where to go from here. Should I go further into folk, maybe?

A few examples of my favorite tracks:
Needle in the Hay
Between the Bars
Southern Belle
Alameda

Bon Iver - For emma, forever ago
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I see a darkness
The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee
Bright Eyes - I'm wide awake, it's morning
Nick Drake - Pink Moon

There is lots of 'sad folk' but I think those albums/bands are the most like Smith

Looking for some recs on lo-fi/garage/punk. I've been listening to the thermals a lot lately and i realized that i have a really sparse collection when it comes to this. Im looking for stuff from any decade, just stuff in the vein of the black lips, the thermals, titus andronicus, japandroids, etc.

'In the Red' is easily releasing the best garage/punk albums today, imo. Not all of the stuff is exactly what you're looking for, but i can't see why you would like most of them.

I'm looking for good bands with female vocalists -- that's really the only stipulation. I'm just now realizing that 80% of my favorite bands have female singers and I'm strangely drawn to that music for some reason. Some 'older' stuff I've enjoyed is Crystal Castles, The xx, Los Campesinos!, Architecture in Helsinki, The Blow, Mates of State, etc. Bonus points if it's rock, pop, or screamo.

I'm looking for something that's almost entirely composed of distorted samples and loops. I've heard this style sometimes described as hypnagogic music (usually with some caveat about the genre being a joke), so I guess I'm looking for more music in this area :shobon:
