Are Figurine still around? I loved their stuff so much, much better than TPS IMO.

Actually, on that note, any recommendations for stuff like Figurine? (not including TPS)

I was wondering if anyone knew of any bands that sounded similar to the Wombats. I listen to lots of Indie Rock and use last.fm a fair bit to find new bands, but who knows, someone here is bound to know of a little gem i've never heard of.

Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs, The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand. There are lots of bands with a similar sound - it's a whole musical genre.

Maybe try Boards of Canada?

Boards of Canada is a pretty terrible recommendation. While I haven't heard everything by them, the majority of their stuff is quite sparse and, well, boring (why do people always recommend these guys). The stuff linked is all much heavier and melodic.

Listen to "Aeons", off The Presets' new album The Apocalypso - its exactly what you're looking for - too bad its only one song.

Regarding LCD Soundsystem, "Someone Great" is the only song I've ever heard by them that I've actually liked - to the point where indeed I've never bothered listening to them much. Can you guys give some specific recommendations for similar sounding stuff?

*edit: wait if you don't like any of lcd soundsystem or late of the pier's other songs then you have weird taste i guess, cause neither of those are particularly standout from the rest of their oeuvre.

See my above post. Someone Great sounds very different, IMO.

OK, so this may a bit too vague, but I'll try my best to give an idea of what I'm looking for. I'm far from a music aficionado, so I may be using faulty terms to describe this stuff.

I've been trying to find some good "haunting" tracks; a piece that can kinda overwhelm you under the right listening circumstances (ex: as you fall asleep).

And I don't necessarily mean depressing in style, just... those tracks that, when there are no other sounds around, seem 10x the song you had previously thought they were.

I guess the common trait I notice is that they're usually centered around piano/organ/string instruments, or completely orchestrated. Figured I may as well link a bunch of tracks I already have that evoke this sentiment:

Burkhard Dallwitz & Philip Glass - Father Kolbe's Preaching
Final Fantasy - Better Than Worse
Michael Giacchino - Parting Words
Bear McCreary - Gaeta's Lament
Moby - My Weakness
Koh Ohtani - Sunlit Earth
Radiohead - Videotape
Sigur Rós - Starálfur
Hans Zimmer - Leave No Man Behind

So yeah, I'll listen to anything that's recommended, regardless of genre or artist. Thanks!

Wow, great to see Father Kolbe's Preaching in that list. The whole Truman Show soundtrack is excellent.

Check out Mogwai's Auto Rock. Its very, very good.

Also, the movie 'Monster' official soundtrack by BT.

Alright, I'm going to have some trouble describing this I think, as I'm not completely familiar with genre names and whatnot.

I've been listening to a lot of electronic-ish stuff lately. Bands like, MGMT, The Postal Service, Owl City, Crystal Castles (but mainly just the kinds of things they do with the synths, their lack of lyrics irritates me), Daft Punk (share the problem with lack of lyrics and repetition that I have with Crystal Castles though), Holy gently caress (lyrics would be nice), Ratatat, and all of the synthesizer work in the Yeah Yeah Yeah's new album is cool.

But the bands I mentioned previously feel like they share a lot in common sound-wise with a few other bands I've really been enjoying lately, bands that I wouldn't think would be considered electronic. Silversun Pickups (more their first album than their second), Metric, The Killers to an extent (Mr. Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It), and The Strokes a bit also (Reptilia, Between Love and Hate). Maybe some Muse songs? A little bit similar to Hysteria and Bliss?

I think what I like about all of them is the catchy keyboard/synth stuff in some of the bands and the guitar work in others. If I'm making any sense at all and someone has anything similar to recommend (it would be the perfect music if it has what I was discussing earlier, combined with cool lyrics) I would be eternally grateful.

If there's anyway I can clarify further or if their are any questions I can answer, I would be happy to. Anything to get recommendations for some cool new music! Thanks for suggestions in advance, I'll listen to everything that's recommended.

Try The Tough Alliance, Passion Pit, Midnight Juggernauts, and the Presets. The new Franz Ferdinand album has some good synth tracks too.

For the most part though, unfortunately, you've pretty much hit on all the good ones.

Well, it depends what you mean by "typical disco sound." It definitely is fairly unique in that it's one of those things that's not what we think of as falling neatly into the "disco" category along with Gloria Gaynor or whatever, but the songs that got played in Paradise Garage were a lot more varied. I'd recommend the Fabriclive 36 mix, which is fantastic disco, and the "Disco Not Disco" series of compilations. An example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48xdD_ITwLY

I realize that I said "early disco" and that really isn't accurate; a lot of this great poo poo was made after the general public was over it.

That song you linked to earlier isn't particularly funky (which I don't generally care for), and it isn't sung by a sassy black lady (which I also don't generally care for) - so it managed to avoid the aspects of disco I dislike. Which is why its so interesting to me, as those aspects pretty much define the genre.

I'll check out the Fabriclive mix. I'm actually familiar with the Fabric collection (I've got a few CDs), and I'm always impressed by it.

Ultravox, New Order, OMD, Peter Schilling

Also, A Flock of Seagulls. They've done a bunch more stuff than just "I Ran"
