Are Figurine still around? I loved their stuff so much, much better than TPS IMO. Actually, on that note, any recommendations for stuff like Figurine? (not including TPS)

Matt and Kim! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgBeu3FVi60 They definitely sound a bit like Tokyo Police Club, though I don't really care for TPC.

KongGeorgeVII posted:I was wondering if anyone knew of any bands that sounded similar to the Wombats. I listen to lots of Indie Rock and use last.fm a fair bit to find new bands, but who knows, someone here is bound to know of a little gem i've never heard of. Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs, The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand. There are lots of bands with a similar sound - it's a whole musical genre.

augustaugustaugust posted:Maybe try Boards of Canada? Boards of Canada is a pretty terrible recommendation. While I haven't heard everything by them, the majority of their stuff is quite sparse and, well, boring (why do people always recommend these guys). The stuff linked is all much heavier and melodic. Listen to "Aeons", off The Presets' new album The Apocalypso - its exactly what you're looking for - too bad its only one song.

Regarding LCD Soundsystem, "Someone Great" is the only song I've ever heard by them that I've actually liked - to the point where indeed I've never bothered listening to them much. Can you guys give some specific recommendations for similar sounding stuff?etard knievel posted:*edit: wait if you don't like any of lcd soundsystem or late of the pier's other songs then you have weird taste i guess, cause neither of those are particularly standout from the rest of their oeuvre. See my above post. Someone Great sounds very different, IMO.

kalensc posted:OK, so this may a bit too vague, but I'll try my best to give an idea of what I'm looking for. I'm far from a music aficionado, so I may be using faulty terms to describe this stuff. Wow, great to see Father Kolbe's Preaching in that list. The whole Truman Show soundtrack is excellent. Check out Mogwai's Auto Rock. Its very, very good. Also, the movie 'Monster' official soundtrack by BT.

monkeyboydc posted:Alright, I'm going to have some trouble describing this I think, as I'm not completely familiar with genre names and whatnot. Try The Tough Alliance, Passion Pit, Midnight Juggernauts, and the Presets. The new Franz Ferdinand album has some good synth tracks too. For the most part though, unfortunately, you've pretty much hit on all the good ones.

kingcobweb posted:Yeah, this is one of my all-time favorites. It's actually "stand on the word," though, not "stand on the world." If you like it you should check out other Larry Levan mixes and just early disco in general Oh, I have. I don't care for most of it though - the song you posted sounds very different than typical disco sound. If you have more, I'd love to hear it.

kingcobweb posted:Well, it depends what you mean by "typical disco sound." It definitely is fairly unique in that it's one of those things that's not what we think of as falling neatly into the "disco" category along with Gloria Gaynor or whatever, but the songs that got played in Paradise Garage were a lot more varied. I'd recommend the Fabriclive 36 mix, which is fantastic disco, and the "Disco Not Disco" series of compilations. An example: That song you linked to earlier isn't particularly funky (which I don't generally care for), and it isn't sung by a sassy black lady (which I also don't generally care for) - so it managed to avoid the aspects of disco I dislike. Which is why its so interesting to me, as those aspects pretty much define the genre. I'll check out the Fabriclive mix. I'm actually familiar with the Fabric collection (I've got a few CDs), and I'm always impressed by it.

I love the poo poo out of Talking Heads, early Gary Numan, B-52's, Santigold, Eurythmics, and Klaus loving Nomi (seriously I have listened to his self titled album at least 30 times in the past year), but I'd like some new artists along those lines (heavy reliance on synths, odd vocals). Ultravox, New Order, OMD, Peter Schilling Also, A Flock of Seagulls. They've done a bunch more stuff than just "I Ran"

So, I'm not sure this quite constitutes a genre, but I'm really loving the sound on these two songs - obvious hip-hop influence, with a menacing atmosphere and heavy electronic bent to it: Kris Menace feat. I've been really getting into (recentish) "outsider" art pop / experimental pop stuff, such as the following - Dust - Past Future https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YRgqhHg89c Faded Paper Figures - Lost Stars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oprfr8XR_D8 BATTLEKAT - Business https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGAo8kaQ_Vc Okay, so its not THAT out there, but you get the idea.
