ServoMST3K posted:Hey folks, what Talk Talk album would be a good starting point? I've only heard "Its my life" so far, but I really enjoy the vocals. According to allmusic (bleh) there is a big stylistic leap between each album, so I'm not too sure where to jump in. I would just start from where you've already started and go on in chronological order. The Colour of Spring is great, and Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock even better. The shift in style isn't so big if you listen in order, it's more of an evolution. Spirit of Eden is probably my favorite, the sweet spot for me over their career. Also, don't overlook Mark Hollis's self titled album in essentially the same style as late Talk Talk.

Transistor Rhythm posted:Truly the most interesting and drastic evolution of an artist over just a handful of records, up there with Scott Walker's gradual metamorphosis. I don't know that I've ever heard of or heard Scott Walker before, but I'm listening to The Drift based on your comment and it's really awesome and dark as heck.

Cervixalot posted:I'm a massive Boards of Canada fan, and have listened to all of their records a stupid amount of times. Can anyone recommend some similar artists who have that same style sound? I really love the creepy, nostalgic analog-y sound (i guess that's how you describe it) they've mastered. You might know them already, but I'd really recommend Mům, who were pretty much contemporaneous with BoC in popularizing that creepy-childlike-nostalgic sound. You might also check out Matmos's recent album Supreme Balloon (but not necessarily their other material) which has a real throwback sound. There's flute playing on all the albums he released while alive though. This track from Out to Lunch rules: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DWeYN14cWk

"Unstable Sidereal Oneiroscopic Mix" on the Anamnesis compilation. It's on spotify. Listening to these reminded me of a recent release that might fit with this request, Kangding Ray's Pruitt Igoe ep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhnN4NhrpVY I realize this stuff doesn't have much to do with trip-hop, I'm just going for dark and beat-heavy tunes

I'm running out of drones and need you to recommend me the austerest drones you've got. I'm not talking talking drone rock or drone metal or anything of that sort but stuff like Time Machines, NWW Soliloquy for Lilith, Alvin Lucier's In Memorian of John Higgins, waves just going on for a long long time without much variation and very pure and direct sounding.

Will accept strong hip-hop/instrumental/electronica/classical/jazz/industrial/whatever. David Tibet's new album "Jhonn," Uttered Babylon is incredible. You can listen to it here. http://myrninerest.bandcamp.com/album/jhonn-uttered-babylon-the-spheres-one He normally releases as Current 93 but this is a new name he's releasing under. Great album, very emotionally involving. edit: It wil probably be nominated for a Grammy but not win one unfortunately. Dr. Video Games 0081 fucked around with this message at 00:12 on Aug 7, 2012 |

Subway Ninja posted:I'm looking for music with a relaxed/light sound and soft-spoken female vocalists. Indie Rock (?) with guitars is O.K., but I also enjoy harps, piano, and violin. While searching through similar genres is possible, the voice matters a lot more than the exact style of instrumental music, and that's a lot harder to search for. Donna Lewis is, in my limited musical knowledge, the quintessence of what I'm looking for in this regard. I like "The Sea" by Phaedra and "Here is Where We Used to Sing" by Fovea Hex--maybe worth checking out. How about Sarah Harmer or Dar Williams?

Most Current 93 albums tell a loose narrative about a personal experience of sin and falling away from God that is linked with universal apocalyptic imagery. The most rock releases are Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain and the Lucifer Over London ep. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAGoWH_FX-o LordPants posted:I really love The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld. What else is good like that? You'll like U.F.Orb too, and some of the singles released around then have nice alternate mixes. Also check out their sister band The KLF/The Jams, especially the album Chill Out. Jimmy Cauty of KLF has an album released under his own name called Space that is also very good and in the same vein. Chill Out and The Orb's Adventures together for me are just perfect, eternal take to the grave music. The first two Biosphere albums, Microgravity and Patashnik are really good and somewhat similar in sound, as is Every Man and Woman is a Star by Ultramarine [ed: originally wrote Ultraworld here]. (Connections: Rickie Lee Jones's voice appears on both Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain and The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld.)
