You have "SUPER" compatibility with me, so lemme tell ya: you need some Unwound. Repetition has sort of a Cave-In/Blonde Redhead feel to it, and it's a great album to start with, but Leaves Turn Inside You is their double-disc magnum opus. Much more "progressive" and majestic in many ways. You will not be disappointed, I know because we have the same ears :)

Lately I've been enjoying hardcore punk bands Flipper and Reagan Youth. I've heard a lot of the popular bands in this genre, but these were the only two that I really enjoyed. Can anyone recommend bands similar to them, preferably on the more obscure side of the hardcore punk spectrum?

Swans are like Flipper but even more dirgey and depressing, if that's a direction you'd like to go in.

Otherwise, try Austin, Texas-based hardcore bands Big Boys, The Dicks, and MDC. Scratch Acid isn't a typical punk band, but they make great "horror-rock" music, is about the best way I can describe it.

I'm really digging Future Of The Left, Les Savy Fav, Lightning Bolt, Death From Above 1979, Coachwhips and Mclusky lately, especially the sick bass.

So I'm kinda at a loss where to start off finding more bands who can jam a beat like them. Last.fm tags these guys all around the place ranging from noise, garage, indie etc etc.

Any recommendations are welcome, and it doesn't have to be from the same genre.

I second The Jesus Lizard and here are a few others:

One of the few MBV contemporaries that matched the "heaviness" of Loveless.

I listen to Dinosaur Jr., at least what I think are some of the other canon underground/hardcore/post-hardcore bands (although I'm never really sure how to categorize them) like Sonic Youth / Husker Du / Sebadoh / Minutemen.

I really love the Jesus Lizard, and the only other think like it that I listen to is Big Black, which I only have Songs About loving from.

Maybe what I'm looking for is intense shoegazing? My only exposure to shoegazing is really My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive.

Thanks for all the help

Swervedriver does the "aggressive" shoegaze thing well, so you can check this out and you'll know within the first 5-10 seconds if this is what you're looking for or not:

So I guess I'm looking for loud stomping southern rock and more indie rock starting points.

Check out Dumptruck and their album For the Country. Also, you can't go wrong with The Gun Club's debut album Fire of Love. The former is alt-country and the latter is more like "punk blues" as it's been described. But you should definitely enjoy them!

I'm sure Beck has done something like that but he probably threw some 60's mod-rock in there for good measure.

Southern Culture on the Skids - Camel Walk

Patti Smith - Rock n' Roll friend of the family

Can anyone recommend me some songs?

Yes! Listen to Scratch Acid, they've got that goofy/creepy country-punk sound down, and all their poo poo is available on one compilation CD!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKe95JQ98UY

Also check out one of their biggest influences, The Birthday Party
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5I2vEcVC_I

And the band Scratch Acid later became, The Jesus Lizard

These are all just bands that are somewhat related to each other, there's way more stuff that I could get into but I'm sure others will be able to chime in too.

Probably Tomahawk. Greg Puciato gets a lot of poo poo for sounding kind of like Mike Patton, but this is good news for you! You want this poo poo!

The band that best approaches Flipper's nihilism is Swans, in fact their songs are even slower and dirgier. But for the "gently caress up" part you might wanna try Butthole Surfers, especially their earlier albums.

Bonus points if I can find it easily online and also in vinyl.

Saccharine Trust is an SST band with great guitar work, sort of like a jazzier Minutemen.

I love songwriting that tells... I guess socially conscious stories? Although explicit 60s protest songs are annoying, excluding Dylan who'd I argue never did explicit protest songs. Any ideas?

Just listen to The Gun Club. They did a pretty cool cover of "Run Through The Jungle" so they def. know how to make cool roots-type rockin music.

If you're looking for a sound from just one album, try another band that only made that sound for a single record. No Knife's Riot For Romance is the closest I've come to getting that Q And Not U sound without just listening to other Dischord or DC bands.

I really appreciate it. I can't tell you how many times I've spun No Kill hoping to find something within the same vein.

The other guy who responded to you, I don't necessarily agree with his list. It seems to focus more on math-rock than this "Dischord/DC sound" that I personally tend to associate with Q and not U. I mean, you'll probably still like a lot of that music anyway but maybe not for the same reasons.

Fugazi's End Hits and The Dismemberment Plan are still your best bets, in my opinion. But you probably already know about them so I don't know what to tell ya!

Is there any other modern rockabilly bands with the energy of Devin, Jim Jones Revue, or Jon Spencer?

Listen to Hot Snakes for the love of God! Before it's too late!

I'm looking for some music in a genre I've had a soft spot for, but can barely find any of: Namely, "heavier" spins on Spaghetti Western style music, from rock to metal to industrial or maybe even limited techno. Actually, any musical twists on the genre would be cool. The showdown music in Season 4 of Breaking Bad felt like modernized SW music as well, while not being heavy at all, but I still like it.

Basically, I think there's flashes of exactly what I mean on the Escape from LA soundtrack, but they're only 30ish seconds long. It's shockingly hard to find this stuff, in particular since even a space Western tends to play the genres straight. I am also 100% for remixes or covers of classics that fit the bill.
