Psycho Pie posted:Looking for some American Underground or similar music to add to my collection. I've already got all the OMG MUST HAVE albums, and I'd like to know where to go from there. You have "SUPER" compatibility with me, so lemme tell ya: you need some Unwound. Repetition has sort of a Cave-In/Blonde Redhead feel to it, and it's a great album to start with, but Leaves Turn Inside You is their double-disc magnum opus. Much more "progressive" and majestic in many ways. You will not be disappointed, I know because we have the same ears

Pyramid Head posted:Lately I've been enjoying hardcore punk bands Flipper and Reagan Youth. I've heard a lot of the popular bands in this genre, but these were the only two that I really enjoyed. Can anyone recommend bands similar to them, preferably on the more obscure side of the hardcore punk spectrum? Swans are like Flipper but even more dirgey and depressing, if that's a direction you'd like to go in. Otherwise, try Austin, Texas-based hardcore bands Big Boys, The Dicks, and MDC. Scratch Acid isn't a typical punk band, but they make great "horror-rock" music, is about the best way I can describe it.

Check out Dumptruck and their album For the Country. Also, you can't go wrong with The Gun Club's debut album Fire of Love. The former is alt-country and the latter is more like "punk blues" as it's been described. But you should definitely enjoy them!

I'm sure Beck has done something like that but he probably threw some 60's mod-rock in there for good measure.

Any other bands that you could recommend that sound like those songs? It would be great if there were some more Dillinger songs like that (although if I don't like screaming vocals I might not be apart of Dillinger's target audience). Probably Tomahawk. Good luck with it ;/ The band that best approaches Flipper's nihilism is Swans, in fact their songs are even slower and dirgier. But for the "gently caress up" part you might wanna try Butthole Surfers, especially their earlier albums.

Right now my top listened to artists are the Clash, Drive-By Truckers, Bob Dylan, The Pogues, Randy Newman, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, M.I.A., Hank Williams, the Mummies, the Felice Brothers It's sorta a jumble of genres, but I love folk, country, rock, punk, garage, or any fusion of those. I love songwriting that tells... I guess socially conscious stories? Although explicit 60s protest songs are annoying, excluding Dylan who'd I argue never did explicit protest songs. Any ideas? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGv4-KpOS-M The Gun Club should cover at least a few of those genres.

"Fortunate Son" is one of my favorite CCR songs, but it's somewhat idiosyncratic in that it's bit faster and more hard-rock-sounding than most of their other songs. if you're not sold on CCR, maybe check out some of their contemporaries, instead. Just listen to The Gun Club. They did a pretty cool cover of "Run Through The Jungle" so they def. know how to make cool roots-type rockin music.

The other guy who responded to you, I don't necessarily agree with his list. It seems to focus more on math-rock than this "Dischord/DC sound" that I personally tend to associate with Q and not U. I mean, you'll probably still like a lot of that music anyway but maybe not for the same reasons. Fugazi's End Hits and The Dismemberment Plan are still your best bets, in my opinion.
