Help me NMD, I'm really tired of having the musical tastes of a 16-year-old girl.

Here's the lowdown: I listen to lots of retarded poo poo. Bubblegum dance, loving Katy Perry, Within Temptation/Krypteria, Loreena McKennitt, uh... okay, get this, I like to listen to Caramelldansen. Caramelldansen! I mean, jesus christ. ATC. Djumbo. Smile.dk. Groove Coverage. Lots of dance music from the 80s. Alphaville. Mike Oldfield (the mindless pop stuff, Poison Arrows and Man in the Rain, not the cool unenjoyable stuff like Amarok.)

I don't think I'm completely hopeless, though. I accidentally discovered Human Resources by The Countdown (okay, it was in the FPS Prey), and I really liked it. I'd like to get into more music that I'm not embarrassed to admit to.

What I need is a "gateway drug" that can get me into "good music." I realize the term is snobbish and meaningless, but I don't care. I wanna buy and enjoy albums that don't have anime girls and/or peaceful woodland scenes on the cover. :(

I realize this is a pretty weird request, but there you have it. I'd like to see myself as a person with discerning tastes in music, and let's face it, Poker Face from Lady Gaga isn't gonna do this for me. I need something that's melodic and that I can easily get into, but that I can follow to find more meaningful and challenging music.

Am I making sense at all? Please help me, before I start listening to Gummibär on repeat again :smith:

well, thank god i got on this before it was an endless string of LISTEN TO OPETH or YAY FRANK ZAPPA posts.

Hey pals. I've been looking out for some good times "jazz" music. I say jazz like that because I'm not quite sure what style of jazz "The Seatbelts" fall under (the guys who did the music for the Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack). I really dig the jazz songs from the show both crazy and frantic (like NY Rush) to the slower sad saxophone songs. That said, I don't even know where to start. I have Coltrane's "Giant Steps" and the Ellis Marsalis Quintet playing Thelonius Monk as well as Coltrane + Monk's Riverside recordings, and I enjoy those but I guess I want stuff more along the lines of what the Seatbelts do.

if you're looking for stuff like The Seatbelts, you're into more big band style stuff. I know nothing about the newer Big Band scene, but checking out early stuff like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, and Count Basie.

Realistically, go to the DJ Megathreads in NMD and PHIZ, listen to mixes, and then, when you find an artist you like, go out and find more artists like that.

What are some rap artists that express musicality and/or emotion in their vocals? If you take away everything but the vocal track, you are still left with something that has a rhythm and isn't someone just mumbling or reciting lines.

I've never really listened to this genre before and am trying to get more into it (mainly via XM radio), but I can't stand Lil Wayne or 50 Cent's style. The Kanye song "All of the Lights" has pretty good background music, but I don't like Kanye's vocal style. I know he isn't the greatest, but Eminem's verse on the song he did with T.I. "All She Wrote" is close to what I'm looking for. It's something that can stand alone based on just the vocals. On the drive home yesterday, there was a Fu-Shnickens song playing on the 'classic' rap XM station. The main vocalist had a great sense of rhythm and timing, IMO.

I don't care about the actual content of lyrics. I don't care about the background music. I hear the human voice as just another instrument and want a different sound than the ones I am used to from rock, metal, alt, folk, etc. But just hearing the spoken word doesn't do it for me.

A. you have pointed out 3 songs that couldn't be more different
B. "the main vocalist"? got a line you can offer?
