I want ambient/triphopish music that sounds post-apocalyptic, dark and depressing. Moody soundscapes and depressing melodies that sound like you're the sole survivor after a nuclear war. Any recommendations?
Robert Rich & B. Lustmord - Stalker. It's inspired by the movie of the same name and fits the description exactly.

plz do not recommend city pop (that SUPER BORING mariya takeuchi album that everyone seems to love). chakra is contemporaneous w/ youtube-hip city pop but it's clearly something more special than that. it's like if the talking heads but instead of being colored by paranoia and economic decline, they were colored by joy and economic prosperity. lookin for that feel. most city pop is really syrupy and slick and too cool for its own boots.

other weird japanese pop from that time period that i also love: early-mid akiko yano albums, anything in the yasuaki shimizu canon, this random-rear end one-off new-age thing i found just clickin' around on youtube one day:

anything in that wheelhouse, thx. i feel like i have the trappings of a "cool oddball 80s j-pop" vocabulary but i need to fill in some cracks.

Well yeah, I know what ambient music is, but I'm looking specifically for music that makes you think of a star field and galaxies. A lot of ambient music makes you think of natural scenes on Earth instead. Or sometimes hosed up unnatural places if it's dark ambient.

This list, the first couple pages are mostly techno though which might be too specific.

Anyone know of something similar? Or at least what this kind of stuff might be called?

A lot of this stuff gets labelled as "tribal ambient" on rateyourmusic

Anyone have recommendations for up-and-coming labels or artists specializing in outside-the-box ambient electronica?
How recent do you have to be to qualify as up-and-coming? Anyway here are a few labels that might fit
