there's all sorts of music i'm getting into, thanks to anyone who bothers to respond. i'll do my best to contribute here as well.

I've been listening to all sorts of loungy/downtempo/jazz/chillout stuff, everything running the gamut of The Cinematic Orchestra, Thievery Corporation, and long time favorite Bark Psychosis, to more bossa-nova-esque pop stuff like Nouvelle Vague. Now, I love the poo poo out of this genre and have quite a lot of it, but as of late I'm in a bit of a 'electronic mixed with live instrument oriented music sounds like rear end' phase (sup Zero 7, Bonobo, etc), if anyone could recommend me some more live instrument oriented stuff in the genre that would be AMAZING. to be overtly more specific I'm a huge fan of the classy sounding bit at the end of Radiohead - Optimistic that carries into In Limbo.

If anyone knows of Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday by Harry Gregson-Williams (I think?) on the Metal Gear Solid 2 soundtrack, and knows of some good artists in that genre, please share, that would be great.

Recommend me ridiculously happy electronic bubblegum-ish stuff, please. As in Toy-Box, Smile.dk, ATC, KaW. Anything with a strong beat and an upbeat tune. If there's anything in the genre with lyrics that aren't insanely retarded, that would be awesome, although I've just about given up hope on that front.

you mentioned Smile.dk and KaW in the same sentence, so I'm just gonna assume you're into the music game 'scene', perhaps check out the Beatmania IIDX soundtracks - particularly anything in between 8th Style and whatever the most recent is. While there's a lot of variety I think you'll dig it, be warned that a good portion of the songs will contain goofy Japanese singing and or engrish, there's a few gems to be found though (specifically from artists like Ryu, Teranoid, dj Taka).

speaking of dj Taka you could go hunt down his album Milestone, it's pretty well done and the japanese nasaly vocals are kept to a minimum.

try Tortoise, United Future Organization, Jaga Jazzist, Liquid Soul and The Brand New Heavies. also maybe Senor Coconut, they don't sound like the end of that radiohead song but they do remind me of Nouvelle Vague and their stuff is live. i have to say though, i'm also a pretty big fan of the genre and from what i've heard the sample-based producers (xploding plastix, wagon christ, thievery corporation etc) making that kind of music are consistently better than the live guys with the exception of Cinematic Orchestra IMO. the live bands tend to sound a lot more like straight up jazz with a hip hop or house beat, or kind of Jamiroquai style funky house with real instruments, not like Ninja Tune Records brand of acid jazz. i don't really see why not playing live instruments bothers you, though, when sampling's done well it either sounds enough like real instruments or is mixed together in an artful way, ideally most of them seem like they want it to sound like a hip hop dj mixing two funk records together which isn't electronic at all. i get what you mean with artists that use a lot of synths and cheesy computery effects though.

thanks much for the recommendations, I'll be sure to give em a go. I worked volunteered in a studio last year, with hours spent as the one trying to augment and disguise sampled instrument tracks and such over recordings, it's become pretty easy to tell what's post production and what's not. I'm all for electronica and experimentation, but when samples are made to sound like the real thing sheer lack of depth or proper mastering can really ruin some brilliant compositions.

if you're into Tortoise and this genre in general i highly recommend you hunt down a Bark Psychosis album.

Hi,

I used to be a huge music junkie, but for whatever reason I have not tried listened to almost anything new in the past five years. I am mostly looking for new bands or albums that have come out since then, since I was holding pretty well in the types of music I liked at the time, but if you think there is a band I may have missed, you could recommend that as well.

I used to like harder, angry type rock - Nirvana and Tool were my favorite bands - but I find it very difficult to listen to those types of bands anymore. I really like Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Kyuss, The Strokes, Matisyahu, Radiohead, The Mars Volta...there are probably a few others, but those stand out. My favorites are probably The Smiths and Interpol.

Any recommendations?

Man, I feel like a massive doofus reccomending to you the band that I made my stupid custom title about but check out Oceansize. They pack more ideas into one song than most bands do into a whole album.

MF DOOM - Special Herbs 1&2
RJD2 - Deadringer - I had someone tell me his more recent albums aren't anything like this one.
J. Dilla - Donuts
Aesop Rock - Nike+: All Day - A 40 minute track he did for Nike's All Day thingamajig. It's mostly music with rap verses peppered throughout.

I ask because I've been disappointed a few times recently after hearing amazing-sounding songs I love and then buying CDs that are disappointing: Koop and Psapp come to mind.
