In my experience this isn't a big deal as long as you can explain somewhat valid reasons for the short tenures. I had a string of 6-12 month jobs and it was due to a handful of things like moving, changing career direction a bit, and not liking the mandatory in-office work culture of one job. It was brought up by interviewers a couple times but I explained it and don't feel like it kept me from getting any offers.

I fucking hate puzzles.
How much side eye should I be giving Indeed professional headhunters. I got cold contacted by a guy for a job for a client of his that sounds like it'd be exactly up my alley. Full time sysadmin position in a non-profit medical research space, local so I don't have to relocate. I'm just waiting for the other show to drop on the catch of the whole situation.

I sent a couple of initial feeler questions to figure out if it's like a contract gig or direct hire. Anything else I should be asking prior to initial interview?

See if they can give you the name of the client so you can check if it's legit, how long the gig is for, benefits or not, if you're hourly or salary.

LinkedIn is great for recruiters. They're constantly doing keyword searches along with geography and time in X position to sell you to picky clients. The thing is they move fast and are a dime a dozen. A good recruiter will coach you and ramp you up a bit before an interview.

I've dealt with headhunters/recruiters my entire career. While they are a dime a dozen, and the quality varies, they are part of the job and are generally useful.

A few of my favorite questions:

Can you tell me how the position opened up? (e.g. did someone quit, is it new growth, a re-org, etc.)

What are the must-haves and nice-to-haves?

What's your impression of the team and hiring manager?

Are you the sole recruiter working on the role? If so, have you gotten feedback regarding other candidates that might be good to know?

What's their targeted base salary range? (refer to the salary negotiation thread well in advance so you're prepared to counter their questions)

I think I've reached the max challenge/growth level in my current role and I'm testing the waters. I'm not looking to leave quickly, but if a better opportunity emerges, I'd love to hear about it.

My experience: 6 years in Azure cloud infrastructure engineering - various services including VMs, complex virtual networks and constituent serivces, Private Link/DNS, Azure Virtual Desktop, Azure Batch, App Services, DBs, Azure AD/Entra applications and IAM. 2-3 years of Databricks administration and platform engineering/janitoring. Certs in Azure, AWS, and Terraform. 12 years as a sysadmin/engineer dealing with Windows, AD, SQL, VMware, Exchange/O365. 20 years total in IT.

What I'm looking for: Azure engineering, infrastructure, architecture, etc. Optimally I'd like to lead and mentor a team as part of a hands-on role.

What I'm NOT looking for: On-prem architecture/engineering. First-level troubleshooting. Scripting/coding/"no consoles, ever" situations - I can do some Powershell and I'm OK with Terraform but I am not a first-and-foremost coder/dev. Sales/schmoozing roles - I can work with people and I'm not afraid of clients, but I don't relish having my performance predicated on whether a sales person can close a deal.

Where I live: Northern/central NJ

When I can I start: Within 2-4 weeks of an accepted offer

Requirements: FT, 401k, won't consider less than $190k base salary unless it's for a nonprofit or a REALLY interesting role. Solid work-life balance. Remote is best, hybrid is tolerable if it's the right commute, team, and role. I won't even consider anything related to the defense industry or law enforcement agencies, or anything that Elon/Thiel/Bezos/etc. owns.

Pimpin' ain't easy when yo ride's full of schoolchildren.
My experience:About 15 years of experience with network engineering, design, management, deployment, security, wireless, troubleshooting, surveying, VoIP, Windows Server support and all that comes with it, pretty much everything with the exception of modern (last 5 years or so) cloud deployment and virtualization.
What I'm looking for: a senior level network engineering position (my last two positions have been senior-level, but some companies do tiers differently), either client-facing or within a corporation. Ideally I'd like to lab out, configure, and install switches/routers/firewalls/APs etc., as well as troubleshoot difficult networking issues. I've got my CCNA and CCDA, as well as Palo Alto, HP, and Aruba professional-level certifications, but some may be expired. (I've been on disability/SSDI for a few years due to a mental health issue and I'm looking to get back in the job market)
What I'm NOT looking for: help desk, programming/CS-oriented stuff, management positions, CJ, sales
Where I live: Cleveland, OH
Where I'm looking: Cleveland area, but anywhere if it's remote
When I can start: It depends on location and timing.
Requirements: Full-time, either salary@145k or guaranteed hourly@72 with 40 hours a week would be ideal. I'm negotiable, though. Benefits would be great. If on-call is needed/required, that will be extra.
Can be reached via: Private message or this thread.

I'm mainly posting here because the gap from disability is huge and most of my certs have expired but that doesn't mean I'm not relevant. I've got a professional-level knowledge set, I have experience with the majority of devices from most vendors, and I'm currently studying for my CCIE Infrastructure. If you have anything that sounds remotely up my alley, I'd love to hear it!

The dialectical struggle of history has always, essentially, been a question of how to apply justice to matter. Take away matter and what remains is justice.

What I'm looking for: Helpdesk or senior help desk, bonus for opportunities to skill up into sysadmin or cloud work in the future.
What I'm NOT looking for: Entry level help desk, anything less than 60k.
Where I live: Seattle, WA
Where I'm looking: Remote, Seattle, WA and anything nearby that has decent public transit access.

My experience: Been in IT since 2002, jumped from desktop to the Sysadmin side in 2011, a couple years dealing with Microsoft System Center products, then shifted to compute/storage/hosting. Lot of time with vSphere, with some NSX, VSAN, and Horizon mixed in. At my current job I have been de facto storage architect for a software development company spanning offices in multiple countries - whole lot of Netapp platforms, Quantum, a little Pure, a few other one-off things.
What I'm looking for: Systems engineer or Architect, senior or technical team lead. Happy to keep doing storage/hosting stuff, or to shift focus to other systems.
What I'm NOT looking for: Helpdesk, network engineering, or programming.
Where I live: Maryland
Where I'm looking: DC/Metro, Baltimore or Frederick MD, Northern VA
When I can start: Potentially any time, with a two-to-four week lead.
Requirements: Full-time, hybrid or full-remote (may be able to entertain more on-site time in the future, but that will be difficult for the next year or two). I cannot relocate. Opportunities to expand my skills or grow into a leadership/management role. Total compensation in the 160k neighborhood.

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

This has also been posted on LinkedIn/publicly as a job, but I can get your resume, etc directly to the CIO. As a forward, the company I work for is under this job posting company's umbrella - I don't have visibility into how they handle things on their level.

Their company culture seems good, and my particular company culture is awesome and I've only had positive interactions with the parent company. They are doing interviews at the end of the week, maybe beyond. Number of candidates already from what I understand.

I tried to get a pay range, but the response I got was it's DOE, skills, certs, etc.

Where: Lehi, UT

Schedule: Hybrid, 3 days on-site/week

Pay: Unknown to me, see above

What: IT Support/Manager - General M365 office support, supporting hardware stuff, laptops, mixed OS environ, etc. The posting has a lot of focus on cybersecurity of various types.

They are looking for someone with a BS typical of the field, and experience focused on O365 and cybersecurity. Certs a plus. I'd treat those reqs as you would any job posting.

I found a job in the last couple months! ! :yotj: . Turns out, they're looking for other people. I can effectively forward info right to the hiring folks to get this going.

Where: Remote, usually everything is a citrix VDI on a company-provided laptop or a client-provided if they require.

Schedule: Contract work, mostly work based on demand at your own schedule.

Pay: Often very competitive and well above what an MSP would pay, but I don't have an exact rate for Datadog as that's not my specialty. . Keep in mind it's contracts so you're not going to get great benefits outside of "a 401k is available".

What: Datadog work, probably ranging from health checks to architectural services. The observability team contracts specialists for different software and this is one they have a distinct gap in the skillset.

PM for questions

One thing to keep in mind is that even if you start today, you're probably not going to be able to do any work (and thus get paid) for at least a month.

edit: talking to some people, tbd on if this fills from said talks or not. Sorry folks it sounds like they only wanted (1) person so far! So this is currently for the people I've been in PM's with - hopefully I can get a goon in the door. Hopefully more down the road.
