THOU ART THEE ART THOU STICK YOUR HAND IN THE TV DO IT DO IT DO IT

What the hell, working for the state has gotten very old, very fast. A little background on me; I'm 26, and in my going on 4 years working at this place, I have had a single 3% raise (bringing me to the illustrious take-home salary of about 22k a year + some admittedly very good insurance). If I stay here, I'm afraid I'll be stuck in this job forever. There were some signs of things getting better, and then the legislature pulled most of our funding. :(

My experience: 2+ years doing help-desk type work for student computing labs, 1.5 years regretting ever joining the Geek Squad, 3+ years in my current job, Operations at a University Data Center. I have experience dealing with 3rd Shift and On-Call type work as well. (I'm currently on nights, in fact.) It'd be a whole second post listing all the brands and systems we touch.

What I'm looking for: Network-admin or systems-admin type work. I have more experience in Windows than in *nix. I'd love a job with some kind of budget for training (anything above nothing beats my current job), and I'm willing to go and get whatever certifications your outfit wants me to have. I want a job where I can learn and gain new responsibilities that are not just more of the bitch work.

What I'm NOT looking for: Entry level help desk, jobs where there are no prospects for advancement/training.

Where I live: Tempe, AZ.

Where I'm looking: Tempe, AZ and surrounding areas. Someday I'd love to live in Seattle, WA (or around there), but I'm not in a position to move unless I have a job waiting.

When I can start: Within 2-3 weeks of a solid job offer, possibly sooner depending on the time of year. (We are at our busiest during the start/end of semesters, breaks, and exam times, and despite my feelings about the work environment, my co-workers are all great people whom I'd hate to leave in the lurch.)

Requirements: Health insurance is very important, a decent vision plan would be nice seeing as I need glasses. If you can pay me better than 22k a year take-home, you've basically got me.

Hey the popes toes, are you at all familiar with this thread? Would the type of work you're talking about fall under that? (I think you're talking about a 'specialist' job with the FSO, right?) If anyone else is interested, I suggest giving that thread a pass, some good info in there.

THOU ART THEE ART THOU STICK YOUR HAND IN THE TV DO IT DO IT DO IT

So in the year or so since I posted in here, I finally managed to pry $250 bucks out to take the CCNA tests. I take ICND1 in two weeks. But this job is rapidly going from bad to worse, and I'm feeling stressed enough to try in here again.

My experience: 2+ years doing help-desk type work for student computing labs, 1.5 years regretting ever joining the Geek Squad, 4+ years in my current job, which is basically working in the NOC at a University Data Center. I have experience dealing with 3rd Shift and On-Call type work as well. It'd be a whole second post listing all the brands and systems we touch. As I said, I'm working on my CCNA as we speak.

What I'm looking for: Network-admin or systems-admin type work. I have more experience in Windows than in *nix. I'd love a job with some kind of budget for training (anything above nothing beats my current job), and I'm willing to go and get whatever certifications your outfit wants me to have. (We are at our busiest during the start/end of semesters, breaks, and exam times, and despite my feelings about the work environment, my co-workers are all great people whom I'd hate to leave in the lurch.)

Requirements: Do you offer benefits of any kind? Insurance? That's basically it.

Gonna try this again now that I'm certified.

My experience: I've worked for an Unnamed Major State University (you can figure it from my location, but I'll never tell) for the past 6 years, as an Operator in their main data center. (The title is a holdover from the Long-Long-Ago when my department was responsible for the school's MVS Mainframe, which still exists as a partition on another mainframe to this day, and yes, we still access it regularly.)

I'm recently CCNA certified. I've got experience to varying degrees with Windows/RHEL (much stronger in Windows), NetApp filers (mostly just watching alerts and swapping disks, though I've helped wire up a few new installs), Dell/IBM/Sun servers, Dell workstations and laptops, Xerox DP90 printers, Control-D/M/O scheduling software (mostly break/fix, JCLs and queries get programmed and scheduled by a different department), Cisco switches/routers, and Blackboard online course content. I've run copper and pre-made fiber for new network installs, though I'm not trained to cut or terminate new fiber.

I'm used to the concerns of a Data Center with constant uptime; UPSs, heat, humidity, connectivity. I'm willing to work overnights and be part of on-call rotations, as long as they're clearly defined.

What I'm looking for: Network Administration / Engineering work with the possibility of taking on greater responsibilities as I learn. I'd be open to learning non-Cisco software; TCP/IP is still TCP/IP whether it's on a Juniper switch or a Cisco switch.

I'd also be willing to work in a Data Center or NOC somewhere else; again, my concern is opportunities for growth.

What I'm NOT looking for: Help Desk or Call Center work. Companies who do not allow for training or advancing their employees.

Where I live: Tempe, AZ.

Where I'm looking: I'm open to relocating. I'd love something in or near Seattle, especially. I know better than to expect any sort of relocation assistance.

When I can start: Within two weeks of a written offer. (Plus reasonable moving time if away from AZ.)

Requirements: Health insurance/401k. Can you pay better than the State of Arizona? You've got me.

Yeah. They're hiring a bunch of ruby and python guys right now, and this recruiter seems to have good contacts internally

I just started at Rackspace about a month ago and they're hiring for tons of positions. Anyone willing to relocate to Texas (SA or Austin) who has Linux or Cisco experience, for one, should really consider applying here, even if you're just a freshly minted CCNA or Linux equivalent. Cisco guys in particular (since that's where I'm working), if you have questions, ask me (send a PM or e-mail my name at gmail) or one of the other Rackers in here; dolicf and gnarlyhotep are two I can think of off the top of my head, since they answered my questions.

Hell, if you just have questions about moving to Texas, drop me a line, I just did it. (Free tip: the tax assessor's office where you go to register your car doesn't take any form of card. Bring cash or check, save yourself an extra trip through the line.)

To put this in real perspective, I made more than that reformatting hard drives and cleaning dust out of PSUs at the Geek Squad. Starting pay. Though to be fair, we never did get those 'Good Job' balloons.

So I'm in a deteriorating work situation. It's not quite to the point where I'm writing 'I QUIT' in sharpie on my boss' face, but I'm pretty much done with this job.

JOB SEEKER

My experience: 4+ years in my current role, as a Firewall Engineer (now a Senior F/W Engineer) for a large managed hosting company. I've worked on ASA/PIX firewalls (7/8/9 code trains), Catalyst and Nexus switches, Cisco CSS, Brocade ADX, and F5 BigIP LTM (v10 and v11 code). I have a very minimal experience with JunOS, and I'd probably need a fair amount of time to get used to JunOS again. I originally got into this business to do routing and switching, but I'll be the first to admit that my routing skills are not as sharp as they used to be, mostly because I don't use them much day to day except to set up static routes on the aforementioned ASAs; I spend most of my time making changes to the above devices.

Before that, several years in the NOC for a large state university, where I picked up some odd skills. Please don't ask me to IPL a mainframe. I can (probably) still do it, but I'll die inside if I have to do that again.

I know a little Python (enough to usually be able to follow someone else's code), and I have experience with Linux/OS X/Windows, though I'm not a SysAd by any means.

Certifications: CCNA, CCNA Security, CCSP 1/4 (FIREWALL).

What I'm looking for: I'd like a role that actually fits my title. Right now, my day is mostly taking calls to troubleshoot VPNs for people who don't know how to program their refurbished Sonicwall/MicroTik/lovely D-Link VPN Accelerator. This is not where I want to continue to be. I'd like to actually build networks/security solutions instead of cleaning up busted ones.

What I'm NOT looking for: Helpdesk work. Taking direct customer calls sometimes is OK, but I do that almost exclusively in my current position, and I'd really like to move into a role where I get to do more complex work and less live debugging of VPNs. 1099 jobs need not ask me to apply. FTE or bust.

Where I live: Austin/Round Rock, TX

Where I'm looking: Austin area, Phoenix/Tempe AZ (I have friends/family out there, so I could be persuaded to move), Seattle WA (same). Remote work would also be great.

When I can start: Depends on where the job is. If you're in Austin, I can start with two weeks' notice to my current job. If you're elsewhere, that's a horse of a different color.

Requirements: The usual insurances. Training programs and/or compensation for certifications earned. Pay depends on the area (probably a little less in AZ, probably a bit more in Seattle). I'm not looking to wear a tie to work every day. Collared shirts can be negotiated. :v:

So I finally got the RIF. At least they're giving me notice.

Job Seeker

My experience:
  • 10+ years of network and DC experience.
  • CCNA/CCNASec, working on CCNP now.
  • ASAs, F5 LTM/GTM, Cisco Catalyst/Nexus, ASR/ISR, Cisco WLC/Prime, Infoblox, Splunk.
  • Worked with big MPLS clouds, T1s, POTS.
  • Enough Python experience to be dangerous, not enough to be a software engineer. I can hit an API, I can (eventually) write a regex.
  • Tons more technology I've touched, listing it would be obnoxious.
  • Experience working in healthcare, student, and other sensitive/PHI/PII environments.

What I'm looking for: Engineer work, FTE only. Willing to work in an on-call rotation so long as it's not customer/user facing directly.

What I'm NOT looking for: NOC work. Direct customer support. No contract work.

Where I live: Tempe, AZ

Where I'm looking: Remote or Phoenix, AZ area, willing to relocate depending on location/offer/COVID. I'm not moving to Texas again, sorry Austin goons.

When I can start: Termination is March 13th. I'd need to work through that date.

Requirements: Full time, benefits, retirement of some kind. Are you located outside the US? Send me to New Zealand. Please.
