This may be a joke, but the first thing I did when the web browser beta came out was search Google for some porn on my Wii. Something about getting pictures of naked chicks on my Nintendo just appealed to me. I know my mother didn't foresee that when I unwrapped the NES when I was 5.

This is a little off-topic, but did I just gently caress up somehow? I needed some free HD space anyway, so I just bought this guy from Pricewatch. Is this a poo poo HD for some reason I'm not aware of? I'm concerned because I see everyone buying smaller hard drives at the same price. Is mine too slow to work with homebrew?

It's not too slow, but it may or may not work for other reasons. There was a compatibility list somewhere, it might have been posted here a little earlier.

I would imagine most people are buying smaller hard drives because 750GB is overkill for the Wii (I'm using a 128gb partition on my 320GB MyPassport, and even with my 20-something games ripped to it I'm only using just over half the space) and it's just more convenient to have a small USB powered HDD that you can set and forget instead of a big clunker that you need to find an extra outlet for. That was my line of reasoning, anyway.

Thankfully it's on the list.

I didn't really think of the extra power cable, but I have most of a strip free by the couch, so it's not a big deal. And yeah, I'm planning on sharing it with my main computer as video storage, of which you can never really have too much. Maybe a 200-300GB partition for the Wii.

I just downloaded 4 different files from Waninkoko's blog, and I'm not sure which of them I actually need. I haven't updated my Wii since Mario Kart, so I'm sure my firmware hasn't been upgraded too much. I have wbfs which will format my HD properly for USB Loader, unless I just get Loader to do it? I have the USB Loader 1.5 zip file...which I actually can't figure out. Will it work if I put it in apps for the HBC to install? Then I have a zip named cIOS36_rev10-Installer, which is linked with the HBC somehow. My drive hasn't shown up yet, but I was hoping to have things worked out by the time it got here.

Also, the WAD creator? Do I need it to get my discs in a format the Loader will recognize, or can I just rip them as isos?

With everyone talking about downgrading, I haven't heard anything about a minimum system version for USB Loader to work. My Wii is at 3.3U, and my updated Homebrew Browser is giving me "This is not a valid Wii application" messages for some reason.

I'm planning on using a channel forwarder to get a USB Loader channel--can anyone point to a good universal one? I'm installing the Ultimate USB Loader instead of the Waninkoko one, since it looks like its based on 1.5, only with extra features and fixes. I just put it in the apps directory of my SD card, but I haven't worked out how to set up the config, and I'm scared to run it on my Wii without knowing what firmware version I need (or a USB drive to really test it with--mine is in the mail). I also can't get the WBFS Manager to work for some reason. It crashes every time I try to open it.

All this stuff about cIOS files and where to get them is way over my head. I just wanted a working USB Loader.

edit: Okay, got WBFS manager working now. What do I need to do to make sure my 3.3 system is compatible with the Loader? Also, is the Loader forwarder on this page compatible with anything in the directory it specifies? It only has the one entry for all of the official USBL releases.

Argh, and then how do I install the wad file it consists of? I'm really scared to do this poo poo without proper information, since I hear it can brick your Wii. I did the Homebrew Channel no sweat. :(

Earlier in this thread, someone posted that they used this program to pack several GC .iso/.gcm files into a single Wii .iso, and then loaded that onto the USB drive.

However, I have tried this several times without success. WBFS keeps saying that it's not a Wii disc and refuses to transfer to the hard drive.

Yeah, I've done a lot of searching since then, and it seems like I'm having the exact same problem. I can move Wii isos just fine with that WBFS Manager, but that same program everyone keeps talking about doesn't seem to have an option to create a Wii iso, only GC isos that are incompatible with WBFS. What are you guys doing differently to make it work?

Argh. Seriously, can someone please walk through step-by-step on how you're converting .gcm files into a proper Wii .iso file that WBFS will accept? I have been working on this stuff all day, and I keep finding the same two programs that haven't worked: WiiUI and that Multi-Game GCOS thing. Neither of them offer the option of creating a Wii iso, only GC isos, and WBFS won't copy them.

I wish one of those two would come in and post, if its not a troll.

Here's my most infuriating Google find: This loving article is a step-by-step process for ripping GC games and using WiiUI 1.4 to convert them into a Wii iso:

"The total sum file size of all your games should not exceed that of a Wii ISO. I mentioned the number earlier, but I’m gonna bring it back here to remind you: 4.37GB. You may ask why you can’t exceed this and it’s a simple answer, WiiUI is going to create a Wii ISO with the standardized Wii file size of 4.37GB exactly using the same dummy data technique we just removed from all those GC games so that the Wii recognizes the disc as a game disc."

Except this is a downright loving lie, because not only do WiiUI-created isos count as GC games in WBFS, THEY'RE NOT EVEN PADDED TO 4.37GB!

Does anyone know why my GC Backup Loader isn't working right? I've downgraded to 3.2, I've installed all the IOS it wants, so it should be working properly. When I open it, I get the usual title screen for a couple seconds, then the image gets all fuzzy and too far down on the screen. It reads and plays games, but I can't get a decent image, no matter how I try to boot it up. It's like it starts up in the correct video mode, then changes to a different one four seconds later.

No! Don't do a system update! It's telling you you need an update because some of your IOS versions are older than they're supposed to be.

How are you connected to the Internet? WiFi or LAN? I suspect you're using a wired connection. The problem is with the CIOS, since it doesn't allow any other USB devices besides the hard drive to work simultaneously. This is one of the issues that the rev 11 will hopefully fix.

You need to delete your wired settings and configure your Wii for WiFi.

Nope, my Wii is connected through WiFi, which makes it all the more puzzling. I can download game covers and Homebrew updates just fine, it's just going online with Mario Kart that gives me errors. Possibly Smash Bros too, although I haven't tried it yet.

Can the Nintendo update wreck already-installed homebrew? I thought the official 4.0 update just prevented you from installing more IOS files.

I deleted a bunch of stuff to make room, and uninstalled the offending wads with WAD manager, and now my USB Loader isn't working. I'm using the Ultimate USB Loader based on 1.5. It's been running just fine for the last month or so, so I'm really upset that I managed to gently caress it up somehow. I just got back from work and tried reformatting the SD card to no avail. The only other weird thing that's happened since the WAD manager mishap was that the icons for USB Loader and the Wii Channel Updater aren't showing in the HBC anymore, just the name of the program and a blank spot to the left of it.

I'm really not sure where else to go from here. I'm gonna try deleting all the USB Loader cover images on the SD card, since it seems like its only crashing when it reads certain ones. Even if that fixes it, though, it still doesn't explain why those two HBC icons aren't working. The FCEU and SNES GX icons are working just fine.

Edit: Goddamn, that seems to have done it. I don't get it, though--I formatted the SD card and copied over a backup of it. I'm not sure how the backup cover images got corrupted too... I could have sworn that backup was from before anything got hosed up.

Is there any reason the IOS Downgrader wouldn't work? I had v1.0 (I think) on my SD card, and it got to the point where it says "Press A to continue, press B to restart." I hit A, and it said "Press any button to restart." Not sure what's going on there. I found what I thought was IOS Downgrader 1.1, but when I ran it, it seemed to be a different program entirely, asking me what version of firmware I wanted to install.

If I'm not using the right name, I'm talking about the patcher that enables the trucha-signing(?) bugs, which I think will solve my problems installing wads (ret -1022 error). I've used the patcher before with no problems, and I've been able to install custom channels before. My Wii is presently on 3.2, but I've got the latest Waninkoko firmware editor that lets you switch from 2.0 - 4.0. The IOS Downgrader won't work on either 3.2 or 4.0, unfortunately.

Even if they manage to get them running from HD, last I checked it was a rather involved process to rip a GC game, due to the way the files are encoded on the disc. I heard it involved connecting to a modified Phantasy Star Online server and ripping them using the GC's disc drive or something.
