I have to grudgingly admit this is a good fight.

I love that each time one of Miguel's boxers starts getting the poo poo kicked out of them he immediately opines about how the opponent is the absolute peak of the ideal ultimate boxer.

Well he was boinging around on the ropes to escape the corner but then the path out was blocked by razor jabs so he boinged right back.

Also yes this fight is actually good and the buildup for the first three rounds is now loving fantastic in hindsight and just makes Ricardo feel even more terrifying.

Speaking of Good Things about this fight, I love the first two pages here of first Woli doing a barrage of quick wide hooks, followed instantly by Ricardo calmly staring right through them and launching a razor sharp super compact jab right through the middle of them.

Ricardo really has the manga protagonist thing of being A Genius at Working Hard on Fundamentals so I'm not sure how an actual manga protagonist is supposed to beat him!

For some reason I feel like Ricardo is gonna pull out Date's corkscrew punch to make Woli's stay still for a second.

This fight is ending up really good, but the super short chapters+ constant breaks don't help with the reading experience.

He's not doing actual boxing, he's getting the poo poo kicked out of him.

Like everybody going "Oh this is a good fight now" will instantly be losing their minds the second Wally is back on offense. The dude is an anime trope, not a boxer. Understand that what you like seeing is the monkey king trope getting the poo poo kicked out of it, not that Wally is suddenly "an actual boxer."

What I like to see is insight into Ricardo’s mind and into him as a boxer and human. This fight is about Ricardo meeting an anime bullshit JoJo’s villain, and handling it completely opposite to how most characters would handle it - with calm, statistics, math, and humility.

Nah it'll still be good if Wally gets back to the corner and Miguel is like "alright, I thought he might start picking you apart with jabs and here's what we're going to do..." and Wally executes that strategy and gets back on top for a while. It'll be bad if he gets back into the corner and Miguel feeds him a banana and it's like Popeye eating spinach.

he's getting the poo poo kicked out of him while doing actual boxing, and it makes him more convincing as a young genius than the goofball rope trick stuff even though he's losing. that the fight might start being written badly again is neither here nor there

No? He’s not bouncing off ropes, he’s doing sharp hits aimed at the eyes that aren’t reaching ( but that look like good attempts rather than just a wild flailing of his arms) and the counter attack he’s been able to throw actually feel like it’s a result of having excellent reflexes, rather than monkey man bullshit.

If the whole fight had been him doing this to get dominance and then Ricardo slowly working through it and not him doing stupid and illegal bullshit while getting away with it, the fight would’ve been really good. It’s too bad it’s only coming now but if this keeps up the fight can be salvaged a bit .

I’m fully prepping for more stupid stuff to happen though

Even if the ref had not told him to stop jumping off ropes, this probably would have happened anyway simply due to Wally gassing out in an elevation he's not used to.

Is that a manga protagonist thing?

Usually they're more for being highly specialised in a specific way. Such as Ippo with the Dempsey

In the first panel with him stomping, I thought Wally was going to use the trump card of using kicks in his boxing.

The most generous interpretation of this I can come up with is taking advantage of the audience and Ricardo's own mindset to force a direct confrontation, since Ricardo would just inevitably disassemble the now-wounded Wally otherwise.

Wally's gonna get owned and possibly even killed, but Morikawa might let him get in a single clean punch.

Edit: Ricardo decapitated Wally, but through sheer boxing spirit Wally's headless body continues to box with Ricardo. He loved boxing that much....

Edit2: Ippo, who caught Wally's head, holds it up so Wally can watch himself boxing. His head smiles in its last moments.
