A big 'gently caress you' to whoever left a bones file full of nalfenshees wandering around on dlvl12. There was at least two ghosts when I got there and there's one more now. If anyone comes across it, just dig down unless you have disintegration resistance. Which I didn't.

You can dig down from the room where you start and come down into the Castle level, then come back up the stairs into Medusa's chamber. Just be sure you have reflection when you do.

Its worth remembering that you may sometimes have to search multiple times to find a hidden passage, which is a dumb game mechanic in my opinion. Typing 'n20s' will search for 20 turns, stopping if any enemy approaches.

I was forced to using that hammer merely because I ran across a bones file with such awesome artifacts as trollsbane, orcsbane, sting?, and a bunch of other useless artifacts after dipping for Excalibur, so I couldn't reliably wish for a good one and I didn't like the idea of spending 10,000 rounds sacrificing for Greyswandr.
Excalibur is a pretty decent weapon, no? Its what i ascended my Valk with.
