Since Phishbills are known for their silly advertisements, I think it's safe to say that they just kinda confirmed the rumored New Years Eve run in Miami. e: They killed Exile last night, one of the best versions of Loving Cup I've heard them do. You Enjoy Myself and Suzy Greenberg were great, too. Despite the best efforts of the rest of the band, though, I can't help but feel Trey is still prematurely ending jams. Saturday, 10/31/2009 Empire Polo Club, Indio, CA Set 1: Sample in a Jar, The Divided Sky, Lawn Boy, Kill Devil Falls, Bathtub Gin, The Squirming Coil, Runaway Jim > Possum, Run Like an Antelope Set 2: Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Shake Your Hips, Casino Boogie, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Sweet Black Angel, Loving Cup, Happy, Turd on the Run, Ventilator Blues -> I Just Want To See His Face > Let It Loose, All Down the Line, Stop Breaking Down, Shine a Light, Soul Survivor Set 3: Backwards Down the Number Line > Fluffhead > Ghost, When the Circus Comes, You Enjoy Myself Encore: Suzy Greenberg Notes: This show is part of the three-show Festival 8. Playbills distributed on-site (beginning at 12:30pm PDT) confirm that the second set (the band's "musical costume") will be the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St, of which the band has previously played Loving Cup and Sweet Virginia. After Divided Sky, Trey acknowledged the beauty of the venue and announced that Page would now play a love song to the lawn since it was the first time they had played on grass in a long time. Run Like An Antelope included a bit of lyrical improv in which Trey asked "Been you to have any COIL, man?". Set 2 began with a video highlighting selections of the 99 classic albums displayed and then systematically eliminated on the phish.com web site leading up to the festival. Selections in the montage included snippets from Michael Jackson's "Thriller", T Rex's "Electric Warrior", Metallica's "Master of Puppets", Miles Davis's "A Tribute to Jack Johnson", Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" and The Doors (self titled), among others. The second set was played with Sharon Jones and the Dap King Horns. Trey introduced the horn section after Tumbling Dice and again after the set, before saying "We are the Rolling Stones. See you later." Suzy Greenberg was played with Sharon Jones and horns. SenorBoothead fucked around with this message at 16:34 on Nov 1, 2009 |

The acoustic set was absolutely amazing, in my humble opinion. It pretty much locked up the fact that I'm going to purchase all three nights of Festival 8 from livephish.com. I've never really liked jam bands, so I've never really ever listened to Phish. However, I'm a huge Stones fan, so I checked out their live cover of Exile on Main St., which I liked a lot. Could someone recommend a Phish album for me to try?

Probably the easiest studio albums to digest for the uninitiated are Billy Breathes and Farmhouse. If you want to get a feel for their early live act and how tight they were, pick up A Live One. Personally, I think picking up A Live One will either sell you on Phish or not. If you don't like that you probably won't like much else from Phish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also - just to be a completionist I'll update the full 2nd and 3rd sets from last night. Set Two * AC\DC Bag * Rift * Gotta Jibboo * Heavy Things * Reba * The Wedge * Guelah Papyrus * Undermind * Sparkle * Split Open and Melt Set Three * Tweezer > * Maze * Free * Sugar Shack * Limb By Limb * Theme From The Bottom * Mike's Song > * 2001 > * Light > * Slave To The Traffic Light Encore * Grind * Esther * Tweezer Reprise This was the first time Esther has been played as an encore as well as the first time they've played Mike's > 2001. It's been the opposite order several times, but never Mike's > 2001. I really liked the 2nd set. The Rift and Reba are both ridiculously well played. I love any time they bring out Guelah Papyrus. It's one of my favorite Phish songs. That song was a staple of their set throughout the 90's and then just disappeared with Phish 2.0 and has rarely surfaced since. This is only the 2nd time played since the reunion at Hampton earlier this year. GOOCHY fucked around with this message at 15:20 on Nov 2, 2009 |

I guess it would be safe to call a Weekapaug to open up Fall Tour Also, seconding the A Live One Recommendation, on it you will find GREAT versions of Stash, Gumbo, You Enjoy Myself, Tweezer, and the version of Harry Hood that hooked me as a fan, and probably the best one I've ever heard. Until I found 12/31/93.

Watching Sharon Jones go off was amazing. This weekend will be one I never forget. We had a great camping spot close to vendors, but far enough away from everything that it was quite. We had excellent camping neighbors who we had a blast with all weekend and saw several sets together. They were even friends with one of the guys on the lighting crew for the palm trees behind and around the stage. He stopped by and I got to take a ride on the golf cart. He also told us that they were filming the fest with 3D camera's, so keep an eye out for "Phish Fest8: The 3D Experience." Another camping neighbor handed out a bunch of Romeo Y Julieta Churchill Cuban cigar's to everyone in our little camping group, which was an awesome way to wind down the nights festivities. Anyone else watch Rob Zombie's Halloween after Set III Saturday night? I really was disappointed with that movie when I saw it in theaters. But watching it on mushies with a ton of other people on various drugs, and everyone yelling at the screen was a blast MonkeyBrains fucked around with this message at 18:56 on Nov 3, 2009 |

Leaving Festival 8 is possibly one of the saddest things I've ever had to do. It was only my second festival and my first Phish vacation, and I would go so far as to call it one of the best times I ever had. The mushroom trip that I went on on Sunday night was amazing, as I was surrounded by thousands of open-minded friendly people, lots of amazing visual stimulii, and my favorite band playing my favorite songs. It was like being in a fantasy world that I didn't want to leave. Esther drove it home for me. That was the song that hooked me into Phish back in high school, and getting to hear it live put me in a state of pure bliss. My only objection is that there was no Weekapaugh Groove on Sunday night, but the Mikes>2001>Light>Slave more than made up for it. Also, that room that had the fire coming out of the ceiling was amazing. I spent a good chunk of Sunday night captivated by it. Staring into it with a bunch of other people who were equally entranced was a nice shared moment that I'll never forget. What a weekend!

I was at 8 and it rocked! My friend Aaron and I met up in San Diego and drove in on thursday. Camp Hunky Dory was clearly the best camp the others looked terrible location wise. The weed was fantastic I could barely walk straight Thursday night and I'm a p dedicated stoner! I was somewhat disappointed by the album pick but I rocked out nonetheless, I felt they could have branched out more considering they already play 2 of those songs anyway. At one point we smoked out this guy in a cardboard box robot costume but he couldn't even light the bowl with his costume so I did it for him! Funny stuff. I might have to grab that soundcheck just to hear them do a "starship trooper jam"...what could have been. Also I was pissed they did Mike's without Weekapaug, Weekapaug is like my favorite song wtf! I scored two lottery tickets to Charlottesville (Upper deck ok locations) and then got two more in the general sale (Upper deck corner locations still not bad sightlines). It felt great to "win" the lottery I never win anything. Comb Your Beard fucked around with this message at 22:02 on Nov 5, 2009 |

I'm dling their earliest show.. 05.03 | UVM - Redstone | Burlington, VT This is an historic Phish show for many reasons. First and foremost, this was the first time Page sat in with the band, playing for the entirety of set III. Strewn with Dead covers, including the only known performance of “The Other One,” Phish was still in the process of finding their musical niche- and their keyboard player. If that doesn’t give this show enough significance, it also contains the first known performances of “Mike’s Song,” “McGrupp,” “Alumni Blues,” “Dave’s Energy Guide,” and also the first incarnation of “Antelope.” Nice. Phish’s Party Time, Space Antelope’s "Biological Mutiny" With Phish’s Joy Box poised to make the rounds, we wanted to offer details on the tracks that appear on the Party Time bonus CD. The 13 songs on the disc, range in chronological origin from March, 1998 (“In A Misty Glade” and “Shrine”) on through this past June (a live version of “Alaska” from 6/9/09). In addition to songs that emerged from the Joy sessions, a number of these recordings took place at the bands members’ own studios. Here are some additional details regarding the original recording dates of the songs on Party Time: “Party Time” was recorded at the Barn, VT, January 2009 “Alaska” was recorded at the Asheville Civic Center, 6/9/09 “Windy City” was recorded at The Barn, VT, January 2009 “In A Misty Glade” was recorded at the Hill House, Moscow, VT, March 3-7, 1998 “Gone” was recorded at Chung King Studios, NYC, May 2009 “Only A Dream” was recorded at Chung King Studios, NYC, May 2009 “The Birdwatcher” was recorded at Cactus Unlimited, VT, March 2004 “Let Me Lie” was recorded at Chung King Studios, NYC, May 2009 “If I Told You” was recorded at The Bunker, VT, March 2008 “Splinters Of Hail” was recorded at Rubber Jungle Studios, Saratoga, NY June 2007 “Can’t Come Back” was recorded at The Barn, VT, January 2009 “Shrine” was recorded at the Hill House, Moscow, VT, March 3-7, 1998 “Liquid Time” was recorded at Rubber Jungle Studios, Saratoga, NY June 2007Meanwhile, folks interested in looking back at the pre-history of Phish should check out Dean Budnick’s editor’s notes this month. While putting together the Festival 8 Express he dug into his own archives and found some flyers and photos from the band’s early days, as well as an article written by Trey Anastasio, while at Taft, entitled “Space Antelope: Biological Mutiny.” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm really digging Party Time. Party Time, Alaska, Windy City, Only A Dream, Let Me Lie, and Liquid Time are all standout tracks, to me. I know they played Windy City in Chicago this year and I'd love to see that one again on tour this fall. Only A Dream sounds like something that came from Mike's solo albums, and is totally awesome with a weird cadence. Oh, also - I called Party Time as the opener for Fest 8.
