oh poo poo...it's the home town heroes! We might have a mutual acquaintance if you know any of those folks from the Asheville area. Eric from brainstorm skateboards is rad and does a lot to support the local DIY and the skate community in general. Fun Fact: Someone skating in that vid shot this photo of Don Jr.:

There's a lot by my house that has been vacant for like seven years and recently the local skate fuckers have made it useful. loving rules. The whole lot is pretty smooth and they've installed curbs and a hip and some other rad poo poo. I love it.

I got memed into buying a 14 inch wheelbase deck. someone at the skatepark told me it would make me more consistent with my tre's. I looked it up on the slap forums and it seemed to be a real thing that I never paid attention to. Then, I got like obsessed about if deck width and wheelbase was the thing holding me back from doing the things I wanted to do on my board. Like, because I'm short, I shouldn't ride wider decks, and I need a smaller wheelbase otherwise how will i tre, and how will i k-grind. So I bought a palace deck, 8.25 with a 14 inch wheel base. I could treflip everytime, but i couldn't do anything else, and the board is 31 inches, and ive been skating a 32 for my last few decks. It sucked, I gave it two long sessions before I put my old deck back together. I've been working and really progressing on my heelflps over and off of things, nollie heels, frontside heels, and i was starting to get white rappers down -- but on that deck, for some reason i couldn't even heelflip, my kickflips were ok, k-grinds my feet would slip off the board. So im going to go back to only caring about width and graphic. 8.38 and 8.5, and if i buy a board and it feels easier or harder to do something on, so be it, i break about a board a month anyway so I wont have to put up with it for long. also this skate video rules, those are some of my favorite skatespots, and it captures what skating in philly is all about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQUszfDkN20

if you've ever seen the gap in person it's like unimaginable. I feel the same way about AA that I did about rodney mullen back in the 90's and early 2000's. What he does is like mostly neat, but it doesn't make me want to go out and skateboard. I know he's selling boards like crazy though so I must be in the minority This video on the other hand makes me want to go out and skate like right now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG8pw90af0g gay for gacha fucked around with this message at 02:09 on Oct 13, 2022 |

Andy at least has some sort of style and doesn't do weird claw hands. He's steezy in ways rodney isn't.

I don't street skate so I don't know much about what he's doing, but I can see how smooth Andy is and that's what I like about him. He always seems to be having fun and looks so effortless most of the time.

this video hit on something i've been thinking about a lot lately wrt to skateboarding and age. There is this guy who's been popping up at my local recently, he's been skating since the 80's, still rips, i watched him do a backside smith on a ledge about 2.5 decks high this week. He said that at every stage of his life he's found something new to enjoy about skating. I saw another older guy this week, pretty out of shape, hit an inward heel after spending his entire session doing slappy crooks on a curb. At FDR I would see guys in the morning, 40-50's age, absolutely shredding. But there has to be a point where skateboarding gets too difficult for the body, but when is that? I'm pretty sure it's 60. Mark Gonzales is 54, beat his body up as a pro skater and is still getting clips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXhV2nrqc8A . There is no shortage of dads at a skatepark that say they wish they never stopped, or tell you how they used to skate all the time, and then cite their age, a knee or a back as the root cause for why they can't start again. I used to go on reddit and see guys in the comments with the standard 'when you get to my age your knees will hate you for this'. But, and obviously I can't feel someone else's pain, I don't know how much of it has to do with knee/back/age/etc, and how much has to do with the desire to skateboard. I asked my father, he surfs a lot, and he says he's in a lot of pain, but that quitting surfing would cause him more pain. I don't see my dad deciding to quit surfing at 70, like I can't imagine that I magically stop skateboarding at 40, or 50. And even that man in the video was out there ripping with his family at 68. After I watched painkiller (which I thought was pretty whatever), I've had this INSANE desire to skate handrails. Like a burning burning desire to skate handrails. The only thing that stops me is probably just fear, and I guess I don't really know how to skate a handrail outside of maybe a boardslide, but if I saw a handrail that looked skateable to me, I think i would try to front 5050. When is too old to skate a handrail? I don't feel too old right now, but when I turn 50, will I wish that I had spent my 30's skating handrails? here's painkiller https://www.thrashermagazine.com/articles/videos/zero-skateboards-painkiller-video/

Whenever I think of old timers I think of the time Daewon Song showed a clip of his hosed up ankle. Personally my knees and ankles are weak as hell so I appreciate a lot of low impact things these days. There's a cloverleaf style snake bowl near me that is fun to just pump around in and get speed.

A bunch of old head skaters are out in the Rockaways surfing. Same with shifting your focus to parks/transition. I have friends in their late 40s and 50s still street skating, but a rolled ankle hangs out a lot longer now.

I think, as someone who stopped, the key is to keep riding. Modify what you do, etc, but once you forget how to fall, you're kinda done. Then again, look at Matt Hoffman. He's still throwing down on the vert ramp and he's broken more bones than probably all of us combined. (Not to mention various internal injuries, etc).

daewon rules, he's been filming for something new can't wait to see it. reminds me I should watch cheese and crackers again. Andy Anderson is rad but I get why people get weird about him, but that's OK, that's how skating goes. being old and trying to skate is not easy but the alternative is not skating so you better skate while you still can. It doesn't get easier but if you keep at it consistently it's not as hard. the new polar video has me stoked these days. I keep watching it and comprehending it. It's a good time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chkI_SdwRgY

Idk if it’s settled down since but I remember like like ten or fifteen years ago people really hated some younger pro. This was also when I was in highschool so it could have just been dumb angry highschool kids or whatever.
