Looks like rain and snow should be over, at least here. Finally I can commute again using my board!

Today I shot this short video while I was lazily getting back from work:

Quite tame (and boring) but I was soo happy to bathe again in the sun!

Took the 45-minute drive down to Santa Cruz last weekend and went cruising around on my longboard. So awesome having a city full of bike lanes. I thought I was literally going to die though going down one hill and not being able to stop without bailing into traffic. Finally my momentum carried me onto a wooden bridge that stopped me. Scary, but fun.

I also use almost exclusively my longboard to move around downtown; carrying it with me beats leaving the bike outside and having it stolen.

I do think you should practice slides, switch flips and the likes before going carelessly downhill. Also, always wear protections!

Had to get out of the bike path in order to avoid two old pedestrian ladies (grrr), my Bennet kingpin stuck into the curb and now I'm looking at one week stop because of the pain on the right side of the body (bruises and all the rest, can't even fully lift right leg). Oh well.

My newest setup, which ties into the pumping discussion:

Redrilled the rear to back the truck up to have a 23.5" wheelbase, and with the Otang Stimulus wheels its got enough grip to pump, but I can slide it if I need to stop or slow down. Such a fun setup. The only issue with it is that no matter how much I ride the (modified) Bennett, I can't get used to it and enjoy it that much. I really want to get a Radikal front, but $175 is way too much for one truck right now.

What's the matter with the Bennett? My two complaints would be that a) the kingping nut is too close to the ground and b) that truck EATS bushings! My (magnificent) Sabres start to show cracks after one month of usage!

Also, what kind of board is that? Custom Pulse?

Is it chewing it up from the inside out? I believe there's a little trick involving putting a plastic tube of sorts around the kingpin, if you're having the problem I think you are

Right on the money. The bushing is cracking on the inside.
..Interesting.. Will have to do some tests w/ plastic tubes.

The deck is a Fullbag Louis Ricard slalom pro model, with the rear truck redrilled all the way to the tail. I don't like the feel of the Bennett, its got a little too much dive and the response isn't as "direct" as I'd like (like with a reverse-kingpin truck)
I've got a single Sabre bushing in that picture, just stuck in an 88a barrel to tighten the rear a bit from the 81a Venom Eliminators I had in there before.
Such a fun setup, for anything but sliding

I was thinking of trying out a Seismic instead of the Bennett in order to avoid the stuck kingpin issue, but it would probably be even less "direct" (mushier?) than the Bennett itself.

What would a good replacement be for the front truck? something very very turny I mean.

Eh they're expensive.. I'd need at least to try them out first. Too bad I don't know anyone with a board equipped with them.

Went with an inline-skating group for a tour of the city with my Walkabout and it's been a blast. They do that as a weekly event.

Great session! Among curious or even puzzled looks I trotted for a whole two and half hours, keeping up with them easily. Definitely something to try out for people with a penchant for LDP and no buddies to skate with.

Finally managed to put online an instructional video for those learning to pump (longboard, LDP related). Hopefully it will be of help for someone, I sure had fun shooting it.

I saw this already over at Silverfish. While I've already got pumping down, I think it could definitely be helpful to people who are just starting - what I wanted the most when I was learning was clear video of peoples' feet.

I know the feeling, when I was learning I had to put together a video out of all the youtube bits. Ain't easy without someone shooting with the camera aimed directly at you and showing the whole figure. I resolved doing all by myself but that hampers somewhat movement.. Ideally I'd have a friend with a camera filming me sideways while I go through all the various pumping styles.

Nice Mermaid you have there .. Are the otangs In Heat?

Yesterday I went for a little stroll after work, some 15 miles, 11 mph on average, with my Walkabout. LDP is a great thing because mixes exercising with skateboarding and that is a plus for a chubby old fart with little time.

Already tried. My KS board has virtually nothing to put your foot on over the front truck.

That's one thing to look for. Another being whether the truck is dropped through or top mounted, because drop through decks are quite low on the ground and that's not desirable for pumping (but great for pushing).

In fact, I'm going the Kahuna stick route on my KS and figure I can do some long distance that way.

Just got a new board, one of a kind .. An awesome LBL Humu!

Some cones went with it so, in half an hour, off I am for some slalom action. If I'm not back soon you can bet I'm still stoked riding this mischievous critter.

I put there a "mini-bennett" and "mini-tracker", wedged it somewhat, all in all should also be a decent pumper. The 62mm wheels are gorgeous to look at, and the whole package is not that different from the boards I was riding in the 70ies.

So I'm getting back into skating, after having stopped for about 6-7 years, and I'm using a lot of my old equipment. I've got a couple decks with what was good hardware back in the day, and an old longboard with thick risers and cracked wheels.

My question is, should I look into fixing up my old boards, or should I just buy a new shortboard and a new longboard? What are the steps one needs to go about to refurb old boards? I assume you can keep the deck and the trucks, and replace wheels, hardware, bushings, and bearings. I assume any rubber item on the board will be unable to be re-used.

Alternatively, it would be nice to buy a couple of blank decks with nice hardware and just paint em myself. Advice on it all?

Well, as for the longboard, the only significant difference that has been introduced with time is the new school bolt pattern, which is a different hardware (baseplate screws) pattern, some 1/4" closer to the truck. But trucks are AFAIK always drilled for both holes so even if you change truck you should be ok.

It would be easier to give advice if you told which board you have and what do you intend to do with it. E.g. if you have a mini and want to do some dancing, I'd advise you to get a new board.

As a bare minimum you'll have to replace wheels (+ bushings?) and, probably clean bearings if they are not sealed.

Love the vintage decks, keep the pics coming!

In 1978 I had a board that was almost exactly like the red plastic one from the shots above, only it was not so wide. Anyone can guess what it was? I can't recall.

In return I am preparing a new LDP video with footage from a little trip I did on my longboard, with some cool stuff. Can't upload it right now cause the connection is horrible, but tomorrow I'll be back from vacations and will upload it.

Seconded .. Unfortunately I'm the wrong side of the ocean for them to ship to me, but the library is ace.

By the way, I'm back from vacations and with broadband comes another video. It may not be as epic as I'd like it to be, because after all this is LDP, but I had fun shooting it and it helps spreading the stoke.

Finally got good pump form. With that in my arsenal now I really, REALLY need to learn to skate switch, as well as needing to learn to push mongo.

Yes I agree, that's something I plan to do also. But first, I'm going to learn to use a paddle. That way, I'll have three ways of propelling, namely pumping, pushing, paddling.

Found a small scale track which was recently built just outside of a kindergarten, and it's a cool playground for pumping with a mini. It's got multiple paths, a wood bridge, up n downs, 180 turns..

I go there with my kids and skate for hours on end, it's hilarious. You can play tag games, use water pistols etc etc, great way to end this summer.
