After a maybe 4-5 year hiatus on skateboarding I picked up a longboard today, I think I clocked in something like 4 hours of ride time today.

I'm exhausted, but it's such a blast.

Nice, dude! I put that in on wednesday and learned so much.

On sunday, if you are at all interested, there's an event happening in town called Slide School. A few guys run a little workshop every year to teach people how to do all kinds of slides down the best hill in the city.

Working, which I do a lot of. I'm always home late at night though if you wanna ride a bit, I'm out near High Park.

I picked up a Madrid complete, has Gullwing trucks and Cadillac wheels. I forget the exact specs. It's nothing fancy but I'm having a blast with it.

I just got in from riding for about 13KM, holy crap my feet are sore.

edit: does anyone know a particularly good site or video explaining the Coleman Slide? I need to get that move nailed down.

Thanks you guys are very, very helpful. A longboard store in Toronto here (thanks Zidmidge!) apparently does lessons every Tuesday, so I'm probably gonna hit that up.

Got the big orange bastard I posted above. Paid for it on Monday, it showed up about 26hours later on Tuesday. Can't complain about shipping time!
The deck itself is great... 39 x 9.8", with 30.5", 31.25", and 32" wheelbases. Its a 5/8" drop deck, with great concave that is about as deep as the drop is. The concave has a wide, flat center that curls up at the ends of the deck to lock you in well, but remain VERY mellow and comfortable feeling. The slight drop is great, it really locks you in without giving the hammocky feeling of boards with a larger drop. The pocket where the drop meets the concave is extremely comfortable, and truly fits the foot well. There is a slight flat spot in the pocket that I find is perfect to put my foot into for toeside stand-up, and hands-down slides.
Heres something to really show the bends and pockets on this deck. Its very well designed.

Its a really great board set up with Independent 215's and some slippery soft wheels. It feels a bit like a snowboard set up like this, and I love it. Right now I've got it on Venom Sidewinders, but I'm going to snag some race wheels for it. A good grippy shape with a decently drifty urethane should treat me well. Maybe I'll try out the new Classic 'Thane Abec 11 Zig Zags, or new Venom Cannibals, or something else entirely. There are so many options for gear these days, its amazing, but so hard to choose. Hoping to take the board up to some higher speeds soon. So far I've only hit about 15mph, and been doing a lot of stand-up sliding on it.

I want to try this so badly, it looks like a blast.

A buddy of mine gave me some trucks and wheels for free, I just gotta buy myself a deck now and I'll have a pretty decent setup. How do I know what size board I need and stuff? I'm about 6'2" and weigh 210lbs.

Well, at that height, you'd want to skate at least an 8" deck. You'll also need to measure (in inches) the trucks your friend gave you as you'll want them to match your deck width.

Ah yeah, I guess that would settle what size I gotta get.

For scale of how large it is, with my Half Cab Pros (cool guys match wheels and shoes)

Also put on new medium Bones bushings, Bones Reds, and new Tunnel Tarantula 65mm 75a wheels. Rides so, so smooth.

That looks great, do you cut the design before or after applying it to the board?

So the day after I bought my longboard I went for a ~16km ride (home from work). It took me about 2 1/2 hours since I took my sweet time, took some breaks and got lost for about a half hour.

I did the same run today, got home within an hour, I think it was somewhere in the area of 57 minutes or something. It's been about two months now since I bought my board and I'm pretty happy now :)

So here's what I've been up to this summer. I work for a company called Roarockit Skateboard Company where I teach everyone from 10 years of age to some guy in his mid thirties how to build a deck. We go through every step discussing everything from the glue to the veneers to the easy as poo poo pressing system. It's a really simple process and if you've ever tried your hand at making a board you've probably come across roarockit's bag (or heard about it).

It's just about the most fun job in the world, I get to hang with kids and pretend I'm not about to hit thirty and when I have free time I make my own!

What you see are 1" drop decks. They're all 8-ply hard maple decks. These are all the same mold and template, except for the middle one, it's a narrower version with a slightly longer wheelbase with a black dyed veneer on the bottom face and definitely my best craftsmanship to date. My girlfriend hung out with me that day and worked on a little pinstriping stencil that we applied later that night.

It didn't come out perfect but for her first exposure to spray paint and stencilling she did a fantastic job.

I'm off to halifax for a week, gonna thrash that sexy board on their hills.

How much is all this? I'd totally drop by and make a board for next summer sometime.

I'm really surprised how much I've retained from skating back in the back. I landed the fourth varial kick I tried (and most of the ones after). I can still consistently spin most every trick I used to be able to, but the landings are still hit or miss. Still haven't really had time to get out and skate much though, just been pushing around in the parking lot. I don't have classes on Fridays, so I think I'm going to start going to the local skatepark while it's empty (and all the drat 13yr olds aren't there landing tricks I can't even begin to attempt).

If they're anything like me and my friends were when we were 13 they'll still be at the skatepark.

VV I did yeah, snagged some pads so I don't destroy myself learning how to slide this summer. VV

I got myself that Ceviche board I posted a few pages back. Bluntslides are the most amazing feeling slide ever. It's been super fun learning how to ollie and tic tac around town on it and I'm getting close to being able to spacewalk. It makes me want a street deck so I can learn on something easier and show off later on the longboard :)

All in all, it's so good to finally have nice weather in Canada again.

Well Toronto is a nice wet mess right now so I figured now is probably the best time to go learn how to slide on my longboard!

A few scrapes here and there but I'm starting to get it! My back foot keeps sliding off and sending me forward, I figure I'm just not leaning back far enough does that make sense to anyone else?

Also loosened up my trucks and holy crap I can pump forever now!

So I recently got a longboard, and I've been riding it a lot over the past couple weeks. I've been noticing over the last few days that my right ankle (the one I push/brake with) is getting sore. Is this something I should be worried about? Is there some weird bad habit I might be developing causing it to hurt? Does anyone else have this problem with their pushing foot? Is it just a matter of strengthening, or is there something more damaging going on here? /:

When I first started I had the same problem, the best advice I got regarding it was that I was pushing down on the ground too hard. When you push, you shouldn't hear much noise at all, once I got used to that motion the pain stopped.

Also learn to pump so you don't have to push!

I hope it helps!

I think my form is okay, but I've been doing them on a gentle incline, should I be looking for steeper hills?

Go faster. Also if you have a camera, record yourself and watch them later. It's a lot easier to see your mistakes from that point of view.

BC Longboards are great, and a lot cheaper than what Loaded offers. I used to ride an Eel and it was really fun. They also have an option to ship just the deck or a complete. Decks run for $120 which isn't bad considering I paid nearly 300 for my Loaded Bhangra.
