I've been interested in getting a longboard for cruising around town and getting to and from the station for a while now. Unfortunately I have no idea about longboards. I used to skate a bit, but on what I would call a "normal" skateboard. I'm in the UK and looking at Octane Sport. http://www.octanesport.co.uk/shop/index.php/kids/mindless-raider-ml2000-complete-longboard.html Would this setup be a good first buy?

The other thing I was thinking was to replace the bearings in that board with the Swiss Bones Super that I've got in my old board. What do you think? Basically, my main concern is ease of riding. I don't want to be hitting every stone on the road and flying off. I guess I want large wheels for that. And what's this I hear about bushings?

Mincher posted:Lately I've been enjoying skating transition rather than street. I really wish I could try skating some more transition, but there's not really anywhere around here to do so. It just looks so much fun to bomb around a pool. Don't suppose anyone knows anywhere around Cambridge with that kind of spot to skate do they?

SUPER NEAT TOY posted:but really, what is that sort of board for? I've tried riding it on the hills around my house and I quickly accelerated to what I thought was terminal velocity, am I doing it wrong? :[ I don't really do downhill riding, but as a guess I would say try a less-steep hill first. Oh, and please wear a helmet.

Bucket Joneses posted:The new skate park Grind Line built in Seattle is so. loving. dope. drat you Americans getting all the cool parks I can't help but think that if there was a park like this near me I would actually go out and skate. Unfortunately I'm stuck in the UK. The only skate park near me is really more suited to BMXers and rollerbladers. What I wouldn't give for a nice concrete pool to mess around in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXqmRAUsn9U&feature=related I found this in the related videos and it has convinced me that I need to do something with the trucks on my longboard. I always assumed it was hard to maneuver because of its length, but the boards in the video look about the same length as mine and seem to be turning relatively easily. My current set up is basically this: http://www.mindlesslongboards.com/maverick/ Any advice on reducing the turning circle. Ideally, I want to be able to pump on this thing.

I've read through the thread and think I have a good idea of what I want to get get and have already purchased the deck. I don't have a local shop to support and Skately seems like a good site. Does anyone know how to contact Rygar? Back on August '11 he said there would be a new SA Mart thread but the only link is no longer active. I'm a poor grad student and any discount helps. Should have waited two years for hoverboards to come out.
