I don't know if elbow pads would have helped when I ate it a few months ago (doubt it, since it seems to have been a hyper extension or at least some kind of ligament damage), but I wish I'd had them on because I'm sure it wouldn't have made things worse. That day really put a damper on my rekindled love for skating, which sucks because I was having a blast and getting to spend time with friends. I hate to let that fear keep me from it, but I'm not at a place where I could afford to miss an extended amount of work. Maybe I should suck it up, get some pads, and get back out there.

I've actually had those G Form pads bookmarked for, probably, a year now.

Do it better.

What's the problem? Trying to make my motions more fluid and cohesive, instead of thinking about it as step 1 pop tail, step 2 blah blah blah, helped me a lot.

I also ride my Stereo (same as a Penny) more than my normal board. That said, I need to ride more.

I happened to catch it (while at a little Mexican restaurant, of all places) the other day and I loved watching it. It's a fun competition format, in my opinion.

This doesn't really apply to you while you're learning ollies, but I feel like I added a good amount of height by really using my front leg and sucking my knees in towards my chest. Just something to consider, when the time comes.

I think I've said this on here before, but a big realization for me was that you actually have to CATCH the board. I just tried to apply the perfect amount of force so that it would stop it's rotation perfectly as the top came round (Newton who?). I still suck at most flip tricks, because my brain is not good at understanding how to spin them, but I can land varials all day. Only varials.

So, I'm wanting to put together a board that's a little more cruiser inspired, but still more like a standard street board. I typically prefer 7.75" wide decks and smaller, harder wheels. I want something, roughly, the same size that I can ride around town without pushing as much, but can still ollie up curbs. Would my best route just be risers and bigger, softer wheels? Maybe sand out some wheel wells to help avoid wheel bite.

On the topic of penny killers, if I order just a deck, can I use my existing hardware from my Stereo Vinyl Cruiser? I feel like I've read that either Stereo or Penny uses slightly different mounting points.

XIII
Feb 11, 2009

I've always pushed the griptape through with the bolts and never had any issues. Really, I didn't know people did it any differently. Hell, up until I bought an entire new setup recently, I've run the same set of hardware for 4+ years.

Is there a way to tell a decent penny style skateboard from a cheap toy other than brand or is Penny literally the only decent brand?

I really like my Stereo, but the bushings and bearing in it were definitely worse than the stock Penny ones. Was a cheap and easy fix that I would have done regardless, but still worth pointing out. Also, the Penny decks have a little more flex to them, but I actually bought the Stereo because of it being slightly more stiff.

Friends don't let friends push mongo (I do sometimes when I'm skating switch, but I try to avoid switch anyway). Your legs will both get stronger.

Also, I also found ollies (and everything) easier while moving.

Counterpoint: I love my Stereo cruiser. I got it because it reminded me of my mom's old plastic board that I learned to stand/push on to prove to her that, if she bought me a "real" board, I would actually ride. I even got the same colors as hers. It's super fun to take out and just push around the neighborhoods, although I wouldn't mind getting a slightly larger board for anything beyond a few miles worth. I do think that you see a lot of people with Penny/Stereo cruisers that are nothing more than an attempt to look like they skateboard, but I also know a bunch of skaters who have them and are way more into skating than is probably healthy. At the end of the day, if you want one, buy it and just have fun.

I'll agree that my Stereo isn't exactly the most stable thing in the world, but I actually like that about it. I put faster bearings and soft bushing in it and it's even more sketchy now. Keeps me on my toes. Although, I think I'm going to put grip on it because I keep sliding around on it, which is a little TOO sketchy.

And I don't know where you learned numbers, but my lovely Arkansas education has led me to believe that $120 is less than $129

http://www.pennyskateboardsonline.com/shop/penny-original.html

And $60-65 is even less

http://www.amazon.com/Stereo-Cruise...o+vinyl+cruiser

Now, all of that aside, I don't think I'd ever recommend that someone own a Penny/Stereo as their only board, but I do enjoy having mine laying around for when the mood strikes. And I'd 100% recommend the Stereo over the Penny, just from having ridden both and not seeing a reason to spend $60 more.

EDIT: Also, if we're being honest, aren't all skateboards toys?

I have also ridden that Kryptonics a fair amount (a buddy bought one hoping it would be as good as the Stereo/Penny) and it is hot garbage, without question. It's most definitely not the same quality. But, I'm really not trying to white knight plastic skateboards here and, if I were going to spend $120-ish on a board like that, I'd get the Bustin over the Penny. I'm just saying that I have certainly gotten $60 worth of fun out of my Stereo.

Just wanted to pop in to say that I disagree - I loving love cruising around on my Penny. It can be a death trap, but if you can't appreciate that quality on a skateboard then I think you're missing out on a lot of the old-school fun these types of boards were originally designed for back in the 70's.

To dismiss Penny boards as a gimmicky fad because of their popularity with hipsters or whatever modern tribe you want to hate on is pretty loving lame.

Nope, you're wrong and dumb for enjoying a thing that someone else doesn't enjoy. I had to get rid of my vinyl cruisers because I was also dumb and wrong, but not things in my life are so much better than I'm free of fun.

Hi, I'm still alive. While Leica did make some good points on the cons of mini-cruiser style boards, I still went and ordered a stereo vinyl. Even though my LY dinghy isn't by any means a pain to take around, It's cool to have an even lighter option that I can actually fit in my gym locker at college. Plus for the price of a stereo board, I can buy a brand new pair of Bones Reds and come under the price tag of an average Penny board. :yum:

Upgrade your bushings too. Trust me.

How about the stock wheels? Most of the complaints I read were just the bearings were, "eh, " and bushings cost like nothing to replace anyways.

I've had no problems with the stock wheels as far as ride quality is concerned. I will mention that one of my original wheels was slightly imperfect, but one quick, friendly email to their customer service got me a whole new set rush shipped for free, so all was well.
