I just posted this in the Skate2 thread, I've skimmed this one and haven't seen it mentioned here. Apologies if someone got to it already:

They finally started putting out the Brian Anderson Epicly Later'd episodes and they're really good. Skateboarding messageboards have been rife with rumours that he's gonna come out in one of the upcoming ones and lots of teenage boys are freaking out that their favourite skater might actually be a 'human being'.

Regardless of the drama, they're worth a watch because BA is completely awesome. Part 2, talking about him getting on the Toy Machine team, is especially good. Make sure to watch through the credits for Frank Gerwer's funny little impression of the front-blunt down hubba hideout.

I was checking out the impora site this morning to see if there was any new parks near me and apparently Dunblane (little rural place in central Scotland) had a nice concrete park built a while back.

Wow, I never expected to see Dunblane pics in this thread. Yeah, it's a fun wee park. I skate there once in a while. I'm in Stirling, which is pretty near - we've got a wee skatepark too. It's kinda crappy and in bad shape but it's apparently being rebuilt soon.

Falkirk also has a decent sized park in the same(ish) area.

Thanks for the 360 advice. My main problem is staying over the board - it flips pretty good but nowhere near me. If I really concentrate on staying over it, I can't seem to get the flip right :psyduck:

I hear you about the Scottish weather - I work from home and I've been sitting at my desk with the sun blazing through the window, telling myself that once I'm finished this project, I can take some time off to skate. What happens when I'm good to go? Pissing it down for days.

Also, I can never believe how small the triple set at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh looks in that Rattray part. It's massive in real life. Sometimes video really shrinks things.

Putting a bit of wax on your board where you get wheelbite can help a little. It's no solution if your wheels really rub when turning but it can help on those odd occasions where you land with your weight wrong and stop dead because of wheelbite (under-rotated 180s, mainly).

Haha, it'll be either the full front & back of the magazine opened out or a fold out cover. Haven't seen it in real life myself yet. They do it quite a lot and it's sometimes really effective, as in the above photo. You see the cover and you go 'oh, that's pretty cool' then you fold out the full photo and you're like, 'holy poo poo, he ollied from way back there!?'.

Yeah, from the green bit. It's pretty mindblowing. Apparently there's a blurb that mentions they were setting up the lights etc for everyone to skate down the gap and Westgate just started charging at the thing from the wrong side.

If it's not Leo Romero grinding up legit handrails, it's this guy going up full size gaps.

Yeah, the story goes that Jerry was injured for a long time (knee surgery + recovery, I think) and only had a fairly short amount of time to get his tricks near the end of filming. I don't think he's even back to full strength now. Add the 'rustiness' that must come from not skating for a few years to the mix and it's really cool that he got a part together at all. Any Hsu footage is good footage.

Slap's 'One In A Million' has been running for about a week and so far it's been awesome: http://www.slapmagazine.com/tag/one-in-a-million-2010

They pick a handful of up-and-comers, bring them to SF and spend the week skating. The dude that does best wins a spot on the flow team of a bunch of different companies. This year has a particularly great reality-show drama vibe to it thanks to one of the skaters, Forrest Edwards, being a complete rear end in a top hat (but an amazing skater). The last two episodes also feature one of the gnarliest hill-bombs ever.

Here's what's up so far:

Episode 1: Introducing the skaters.
Episode 2: Stair session
Episode 3: Gaps / rails / stairs / hills!
Episode 4: Rail / bumb session. Day 1 review.
Episode 5: Tranny spot / crazy hill-bomb cliffhanger.
Episode 6: Hill-bomb aftermath / downtown session.

First skate of the year and I took a bad slam. Did the whole accidentally-stepping-back-on-the-board-after-missing-a-trick thing and it whipped me armpit first (if that's even possible) to the floor. Thought I'd dislocated my shoulder for a few seconds. I was taking things slowly too. The most terrifying, demotivating thing about skating is when you're reminded you can get really hurt doing the easiest stuff. I'm amazed more tech skaters don't end up slamming their heads into the corners of ledges when a trick doesn't go to plan.

Urgh. 1 day in and I've already got the fear.

I moved to Glasgow at the start of winter so I haven't really had a chance to explore my surroundings until now. The good weather has let me have a little cycle around to see what I can see. The city's main skatepark, Kelvingrove, is pretty decent but it's a good hour away from my house, after a little searching online, I discovered that I have two(!) parks within 20 mins of me in the Southside.

The first is, well, one with a reputation. I've seen it in some local videos over the years but today was the first time I've actually visited in person. Queen's Park skatepark may very well be The Worst Skatepark In The World:

That's a vert ramp. A crusty old 10 foot, deadly vert ramp just dropped in the middle of a park on lovely ground with some lovely 'obstacles' seemingly placed at random around it. Photos can't really express how dangerous this place looks. It's tall, narrow and rotting away. I particularly love the kicker (bottom middle) and the 'handrail' (middle left). The stuff is actually bigger than these photos make out - the stairs are around chest height and the flyout thing (middle right) is up to my waist.

A better sense of scale from a recent Heathen ad:

gently caress that.

I also discovered Rouken Glen skatepark. Another kinda prefab park but one that actually looks like it could be fun rather than, y'know, fatal. It's in a nice park and I've seen a dude on YouTube upload a bunch of pretty good stuff from there which suggests it's got a not bad little scene going on. Might be good for mucking about during the summer when the city's big park is busy as hell.

Here's a recent wee video from the park too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17Bbrs5l5fc

Forgive the cheesy Hipstamatic photos - I just got a new phone and I can't stop playing with it.

Any type of gimmick claiming to make a board lighter, stronger or just all around better is almost always bullshit. At best you'll be paying more for something that performs like a regular deck, at worst it'll be weaker or just plain lovely.

Any kind of 'innovative' deck is basically aimed at little kids. They'll argue about what abec their bearings are and how their helium infused board is waaay better than their friend's fibreglass-toughened setup.

A board that's a wee bit lighter or a wee bit stronger won't really help much.

A little bit of context - Hsu had a pretty serious ankle injury while filming and his Emerica part ended up being a short collection of switch tricks. As a result, these b-sides include a lot of regular stuff that they didn't use, plus a ton of sketchy misses.

Are there some decent starter videos/guides out there? A friend and I found some decent skateboards and figure we'd like to try skateboarding out. We've been practicing on them for a few days now, and we haven't fallen too much yet.

Tony Hawk covers pretty much everything in good detail: Tony Hawk's Trick Tips vol1 - it starts with setting up a board > standing on a board > pushing > turning > ollies > tricks.

Once things get more advanced, the video goes beyond most other 'trick tips' by telling you stuff like how to build your way up to a trick (like showing you that you can learn nosestalls before noseslides) and common mistakes / how you're most likely to fall.

It's hard to say how helpful instructional videos can really be but man, they vary wildly in quality. Some literally just describe a trick - 'to do a tailslide you ollie, land in a tailslide, slide, pop out and roll away clean'. Others can be, at the very least, really interesting. The Show Me The Way videos are pretty neat - I've heard Reynold's frontside flip and Janoski's 360 flip clips have helped a lot of people.

The fakie thing is a bit of a non-issue. 720s on vert have mostly been done that way forever and, when it came to stuff like the XGames at least, were so common that nobody used to announce a 'fakie 720'. A forwards one is still a fairly rare beast (I think - it's been a while since I've properly paid attention to the competition circuit).

But yeah, it's way harder to imagine anyone dong one forwards or on a regular vert ramp.

Try to ollie over something very small, it can help focus your actions. A twig / string / piece of paper or similar - something that'll move a little to indicate you didn't clear it but won't cause you to fall. Once you get the hang of that, you can move up to bigger twigs, crushed soda cans and finally... another skateboard! Ollieing up kerbs is good practice when you reach a certain stage too.

If that's not working, you can even just find / scratch a line on the ground and try to jump it. Don't even worry about getting all 4 wheels up at first, just get used to quickly tapping your tail on the floor as you approach and go from there.

The average width of regular skateboards has increased over the last 10 years or so. I remember 7.5 / 7.75 being really common because "they're easier to flip". Nowadays it's kinda hard to find anything under 8 (my local shop only has a handful). I dug out an old 7.75 deck recently and it felt really weird and precarious. It's crazy how much you can notice 1/4 inch differences with your feet.

Lots of people have been tipping Brandon Westgate because he's on a killing spree filming for his Emerica Made part. Totally deserving SOTY - a humble, quiet dude who doesn't seem to follow trends and goes super fast / big.

His Epicly Later'd episode is a nice wee look into what he's about. The 'behind the scenes' clips for his True East and Stay Gold parts are totally bananas too. He's also getting coverage in Thrasher which has always been pretty important, what with it being their award and all. That's a hell of a 360 flip:
