Check in time for another old fart getting back into the game. It's been 10 years, after skating for over 20. My daughter wanted a Penny board. That evening in a parking lot, as I was showing her how to use it, I had a thought: "holy poo poo this is fun!". To her credit she was very patient as I hogged her board and wiggled around. That night I got drunk, read this thread, and watched videos of Mark Gonzales on Youtube. The next day I put this together: ![]() Parts spec'd more for nostalgia than anything else. Thinking I'd be a little rusty, it was a shock to find that my body just doesn't want to move the way it used to! Fortunately I wasn't a complete spaz and by the end of an afternoon of slappies, ollies, and no-complys, I managed to work back into popshuvs (off a TWO STAIR My goals are: 1) to not be a complete retard while cruising to the pub and 2) sneak into the skatepark in the morning then retreat to the pool when the kids show up. So...thanks, you guys, for your part in all of this. Rot fucked around with this message at 09:11 on Jul 24, 2013 |

I'm old (turn 50 this year) and skated from when I was single digits to my mid 30s. This spring a buddy came out of nowhere and said he wanted to learn how to skate. So we joined up with another friend and started going to the skatepark every Tues and Thurs mornings, then adding lunch sessions on random days. And it was the best goddamn thing we decided to do. My buddy went from barely being able to push to pumping transitions and doing fly-outs, and I eventually relearned how to ollie and built up to consistent 50-50s on benches and boardslides on low flat rails. It's been so rewarding to watch everyone progress and while I know I'll never get back to the level I was at in my 20s, I'm super stoked to be out there again.

It was a trip to get going again, not going to lie. It's a major struggle to just get my body to do the things it used to do - as expected but maybe not to this extent. It's like I still have the muscle-memory but don't have the muscles/skeleton/body for those memories to make sense of the situation now. Also, injuries are no joke. A few years ago I broke a vertibrae biking (I live in a mountain town and skiing and mountain biking are my main things) and I still have to be really careful with that. And one of the first things I did when getting back on the skateboard was strain my achilles tendon by simply pushing around too hard without warming up. Even this morning, I ate poo poo trying to ollie over something higher than usual. Classic hook my back truck and land over the obstacle, on my hip and elbow. Hand is still a bit tingly/numb and I'm limping around the house. Still fuckin awesome though. Rot fucked around with this message at 01:19 on Nov 12, 2025 |

I can appreciate what those lunatics do from an athletics/gymnastics/bravery standpoint and it's a crazy stunt, but it doesn't really connect to me in the same way as "actual skateboarding". Joslin lands things the way I do in my dreams. Absolutely incredible skating. More to the point: ![]() ~ 850k views as I post this, Schaar's insane video is the nearest at less than half that. That's SOTY right there.

Oh sick, I got invited to an indoor bowl session this Thurs evening ![]() Problem: I injured my rotator cuff this weekend skiing (also I haven't properly skated a bowl in at least a decade+ It's with a pretty chill crew of old dudes though and it'll be fun to get on the board mid-winter.

Indoor bowl trip report: Harder than I remember it being, just like skateboarding in general. Flailed pretty badly for the first couple drops but then kinda got back into the swing of things. Was starting to hit the coping and took a couple slams that slowed me down, then took a final big one where I hit my head pretty hard (fortunately wearing a new helmet bought only yesterday). However it seems like maybe the movement and range of motion required to properly skate a bowl aggravates my lower back, which is a bigger bummer than just slamming a couple times. All that being said it was a rad session with some serious rippers. It was super fun to just sit on the side and cheer everyone on.
