I think the gauntlet before the Allant fight is fun, usually even kill the dragon for the hell of it.
Pretty sure Allant is the only boss that kills me when I do a new run, maybe Dragon God if I'm being careless.

Here's a secret: None of them are bad but Dark Souls (1) is probably the best one (at least that's the popular answer.) The rest depends on your tastes. If you want to see Bad Souls look no further than Lords of the Fallen.

Dark Souls PC thread is alive and kicking tho!

In my opinion all souls games are great and as already been said, if you like one over another is just a matter of taste. I love Dark Souls 1, DS2 has its moments but is the weakest of the three in PvE but in PvP is still the best. DS3 is a good experience and drinks from Bloodborne wich is since I got a PS4 on December my favourite with DS1.

And yes, Lord of the Fallen is a bad souls game. I found it boring and only a couple of things were nice like actual shield bashing or running with your shield up will stagger most enemies. Other than that, is mediocre but worth a playthrough if you get it for under 10 bucks.

Returning to the game after 6 months for NG+,
Soul Level 89. Claymore +9, Adjudicator's Shield + 1.
Vit. / End. Build with Evacuate.

1-1 Easy Phalanx
1-2 Wtf. Can't get past the Archers and the two Blue Eyed Knights at the end of the bridge just before the fog.

Died 10+ times.

What am i doing wrong?
I don't remember this being so hard in my first run.

Do you like do damage? Usually a vit/end build uses a dragon weapon or the northern regalia with max character tendency since those don't need stats to scale damage. Adjudicator's is good, but you could do better if you wanna block phys attacks and don't rely on the regen.

For some reason i have Soulbrandt, Demonbrandt and False King's Demon Soul deposited, but no Northern Regalia.
I guess didn't visit Ed before triggering the point-of-no-return end sequence.

Will read the wiki and go through my inventory for dragon weapon or something that does more damage.
Also, the Adjudicator seems that does not fit this battle will try to switch to something better.

Well you don't get Soulbrandt until after the point of no return. (False king doesn't have the real one, ol' swampy does).

But yeah, NG+ is where the real Demon's Souls start, I had the exact same experience where I hit a brick wall after 1-1. After messing around with a few other characters, I finally powered through and now my first character is in NG+7 or some nonsense like that.

Good to know, thought i had forgotten to visit Ed before NGing.
I wasn't thorough in my first playthrough, wasn't expecting to ever return for NG+,
so now i have to work with what i have.

I had picked up the game back in 2009/10? quited in 1-2 and only returned to it past November.
It clicked. Fell in love with it.
But before trying Dark Souls, i'd like to try NG+.

Now, is the first time i am fiddling / testing / switching equipment.
Switched Brushwood Armor, for Miralda's set, to get rid of stamina regeneration penalties.
I manage to get past the Blue Eyed knights consistently with Dragon Bone Smasher - dual wielded + quick stamina regen.

For the boss battle i switch to Claymore and Purple Flame Shiled, and that's where i am stuck.
One mistake, and i am one-two shotted unless i am at 100% health and quickly consume grass before another hit lands.

What a game. :)

Read some rumours last week, that a remaster could be on its way...

I don't think it particularly matters which you play first, if you've already played all the later games - the main advantage of playing them in order is that you don't feel the absence of the quality of life stuff added in the later games.

As for builds, it depends on what you like playing? All the standard build types are strong (more or less) in both DeS and DS1, but you can never go wrong with a quality build (STR/DEX). If you don't want to trivialize Demon's Souls, I would advise against starting Royalty/Magician - magic is really overpowered in pve.

Amppelix
Aug 6, 2010

There's no "right" answer to this but since we're in the DeS thread and all I would totally recommend DeS into DaS if you're going to play both anyway. DaS is a bit more generally polished and, imo, just a better game, but not by much, so you'd be saving the best for last.

As for builds, magic is probably at its most powerful in DeS (they've been dropping it in power throughout the entire series) so if you want the easytimes start as a Royal (who gets an MP regen ring) and spam soul arrow and later soul ray. Most enemies don't really have any way to deal with any sort of ranged attack much less ones with the power level of spells.

Now if you want something interesting instead, go for STR/FTH. It's also kind of OP in its own way when you get the good setup going but it sure takes a while to get there and you do still have to actually engage your enemies which is what's most fun about the series. And I love every single heavy weapon in DeS, especially the Greatsword. The movesets make them feel heavy in a way no game has done since. The thing that makes the str/fth combo work is that all faith infused weapons regenerate your health in this game so you can tank a few hits while swinging your huge instruments around and still be fine. When you stack that with the regen ring and the regenning shield is when things start to enter literally unkillable territory.

Oh, and speaking of weapon upgrades, look those up. Do not try to figure it out yourself, that will only lead to headaches and wasted materials. The upgrade system is terrible and unintuitive.

Honestly I would play DeS because DkS1 is just more Dark Souls.

DeS has a different setting and you might not want to hear the game mention THE CURSE/FLAME/UNDEAD for the umpteenth time

The Regeneration miracle is also bonkers, restoring 1% of your HP every second for 100 seconds. Adding that to the rest of the gear and you can regen ~30 HP/s. It's easy to see why they dialed it regen and magic in later entries.

Epee Rapier and Rune Sword are both pretty bad, you could find another weapon you like and upgrade it to Crescent or Moon though. Estoc, Uchigatana and Crescent Axe are all good options.

Finally, it's playable on PC.

It seems there are some framerate dips in some maps, but overall is running great, and in 1080p resolution. Some people already finished the game.

What you need to play:

PC.
CPU: i5-2500k or anything above it but you might try with something lower.
GPU: Nvidia1050/RX560 equivalent like above
RAM: At least 4GB
Emulator: RPCS3 (set in graphical options of RPCS3 to Vulcan set controls - RPCS3 supports x360 gamepad - and off you go)

Here is how it looks and runs on PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3_WiNow_gE

Best commentary in the vid:

Epee Rapier is actually pretty solid especially since it does fire damage, but Rune Sword is garbage since you can never upgrade it.

For mage builds I recommend just sticking with the Crescent Falchion (or making your preferred weapon Moon/Crescent as Read suggests) and swapping to the Blueblood Sword when you get the chance. It's made with the Pureblood Demon's Soul and the Broken Sword that drops rarely from the basic Dregling enemies. It has surprisingly high innate magic damage and when buffed with Light Weapon on a Magic build it's really strong.

I guess w/o passwords that the easiest way is just to have a specific spot to meet - World 5 at the leechmonger would be the best since I already screwed up my world tendency there and going online won't screw it up more. I'll probably be online after 5:30 or so CST so just send me a PM if you're available around then.

EDIT: Turns out I had one more spawn on one of the lizards and got a pure stone from it, so should be good!

it's not the console, that's just an issue with the digital version of demon's souls. i thought it was my system when it happened to me but it literally just happens randomly when you load the game, and it's actually tied to the online stuff cause on the random times the game decided to just not even try to connect it ran without issue. it will also stop if you exit and reload your save, so it's absolutely an issue with the game itself

Finished the playthrough for the first time. Have to admit I ended up spoiling myself quite a bit, because I didn't really trust the game that much. Like with the crystal lizards disappearing permanently until a change of world tendency. Pretty surprised how effective magic was in comparison to other Souls games, not that I used it much as an archery type.

Maybe it's the spoilers or experience, but it felt fairly easy, probably easiest of the Souls games. Giant Depraved Ones in the swamp were the only enemies really giving the a hard time. False King was also pretty tough. And is there even a non-cheesy way to kill Old King Doran?
