Is it so weird that Romania has a ranked team? They had a good team in 1994, I remember watching this goal. Both passes by Hagi are brilliant.

Technically I think all the ref can do in the situation is stop play due to interference and perhaps start the game again with a dropped ball. You can bet your arse the team the guy works for will be fined up their arses though.

I could see the referee just abandoning the match and awarding the "scoring" team a 3-0 win.

I don't think he's actually allowed to do that though. When the fan hit the ref in the Denmark - Sweden game, the ref called the game off and awarded a 3-0 win to Sweden, except it was later announced that he couldn't actually award a win like that, although UEFA decided to follow his line and do the same thing. He can call of the game, but not award a win. Of course, it might be completely different in other leagues, particularly less organized ones.

When the flare hit Dida in the 04-05 Champions League game between Milan and Inter the ref ended up calling the game, giving Milan a 3-0. That result stood.

Ah, there's a fundamental misunderstanding at work here. When a match is abandoned through circumstances that are obviously somebody's fault (like having too many players sent off or not being able to control your spectators), the standard procedure is for whoever's in charge of the competition to rule a forfeit and award a 3-0 win. What a lot of people miss (including a few who really should know better) is that it's not down to the referee to do that. His only power in the LOAF is to terminate the match, not to decide what happens afterwards.

I love his elegant little spin to knock the ball into his own net. A true artist like him wouldn't just hoof the ball into the net, there needs to be flair!

So what would your ruling have been in that situation> The physio keeping the ball out, I mean. Would you have terminated the match or done something else?

That article posted:

Ways to spot that a team goal is overrated, part one in a short series: when an advocate tells you how many passes it involved. Take Argentina's 26-pass goal against Serbia & Montenegro at the last World Cup. It was a supreme effort, involving six very decent touches at the end, but Serbia were an apathetic shower and the first 20 passes, under no pressure at all, were little more than an exercise in culturally legitimated indulgence. The number of passes before a goal is about as relevant as the number of notches on a bedpost. It's quality rather than quantity that counts. If you get both, so much the better.

Me? I would have turned around to retie my laces, and then maybe had a a chat with the goalkeeper at the other end, something to kill a couple of minutes while the problem resolved itself.

Problem here is that the guy plays for some lovely baltic team, and for the rest of his life, try as he might, he's never gonna do anything better than that

He may as well just quit football at this point

Eh, I wouldn't be that harsh. He's not that old, he's improved every year so far in his career and he's getting paid to play football. In his future I see maybe a couple of caps for Estonia and a short stint in Scandinavia somewhere.
