I actually have a folding crate box FULL of wheels, tires and other stuff for Mini cars, including rally tires and stuff like that, that's how enthused I was about Minis.

You should have Krushgroove do it!

So, I'm buying upgrades from rcmart.com I think. Still can't suss out what gears I need, I know stock is 19t pinion, 61t spur, but I don't know if they're 48 or 64 pitch in a TT01E. Any idea?Aiming for a 18/65 or so for a lot of low torque, high speed means little to me. I am getting a 10.5 or 8.5t motor, though, how much will that affect all this?

I think Tamiya has their own measurement situation going on. Just go to the Tamiyausa page and find the TT01 page. It will list all of the applicable hop up and gear sets you can get. Just search by part number. Also I think when I was buying my TT02 stuff, banzaihobby worked out to be cheaper.

My experience was pretty good with banzai. Got my stuff in like four days and they refunded me for the two items they didn't have. Is there any kind of maintenance I need to do to a Tamiya silver can motor to keep it running well? It's the enclosed type so it doesn't seem like there is much I can do. Or are they so cheap that it's a run it till it dies situation.

I really like tqrcracing for tamiya parts in the US. Their prices seem pretty ok and the shipping is fast. They also refunded me when a ball diff broke upon assembly and we're nice about it.

Speaking of customer service stories I've got an ongoing lovely one. I ordered a chassis and miscellaneous parts from Crawford Performance Engineering about 3 weeks ago (18 days) and never heard anything after placing my order. I got pissed after 8 days of no contact/shipping info so I e-mailed him saying I just want a refund (I paid via paypal). I've since sent him multiple e-mails saying I want a refund (his phone number doesn't work thats on the site) and it's been 11 days now since requesting the money back with no response. I'm getting pissed. The dude has a disclaimer on his site saying due to him working for monster jam that shipping could be delayed which I understand, but its going on 3 weeks now and it's bullshit. Besides, I dont even want the product I just want my money back. The guy has been posting on his facebook page so its not like he can't take 2 minutes to issue a paypal refund. I posted about it on my club page last night and people started messaging me saying "he's a good guy, he's just busy". Yeah, I'm sorry but 18 days with not so much as a reply is complete poo poo customer service. I'd even be happy with a quick "Hey man, been really swamped I'll back to you soon" but at this point I'm done. Am I being unreasonable to file a paypal claim against him if I still have no response/refund by later this week?

So, I figure I should take advantage with ebay/Craigslist and get poor suckers old gear for a pittance. After playing with this bone stock tt01e, I went and bought these, which I'm pretty sure I stole (specially the Subie, since he's replacing the broken gears, giving me the lipo, and switching all the connectors out to Tamiya standards (which I use.) The Escort guy is switching connectors too. All for free on top of my bid. As far as the body, if you only want a single color (which for that awesome body would look really nice) its really not that hard at all. The most time consuming part is more the prep and cutting, especially if only doing one color. I just picked up an ABC Hobby 1993 Toyota MR2 body and it seems their plastic or whatever material they use is different than the HPI or Tamiya bodies I've seen. It is much thicker comparatively but an xacto worked fine cutting through it.

I have a lot more experience with aircraft engines but in general, gas engines are heavier, more expensive/complicated (due to electronic ignition module and usually a different carburetor), and like lower RPM's than their glow fuel brethren, and make less power per CC. However, they are much more economical to run (gas with oil comes to around 5-8 bucks a gallon, and they run at much leaner fuel/air ratios so they use about 1/3 as much fuel). They are also cleaner and run more consistently (not sure how much this matters with surface vehicles). They are cleaner because instead of something like 15-25% oil the fuel is typically 2-6% oil. On this truck it looks like they have tried to alleviate the power issues with more displacement. This is really exciting stuff. On the aircraft side I don't do any more nitro and do more and more gas stuff and as gas motors have gotten smaller and smaller they have become more viable where only nitro was available before. This is by far the smallest modern gas motor I have seen and I look forward to seeing how well it works.

I just got back from the Nuremberg toy fair yesterday and got to see both up close. I have much higher hopes for the savage octane over the Losi gas for a few reasons: The engine in the octane is kind of a 'hybrid' gas/nitro engine that was built in conjunction with a major reputable engine manufacturer in japan. The initial prototypes had a carb similar to what you'd find on a nitro (and what is on the Losi) but this final version has a walbro 668, which we use in 1/5 Zenoah and CY motors and is dead easy to run/tune. That with what looks like a robust pull starter, elec ignition and spark plug makes on board electric starting nothing more than a marketing gimmick/paperweight. Working on a XXL is also a total nightmare and makes you question your life choices. The HPI does have a 3 speed trans and I've heard speed is similar to the savage 4.6, which is plenty fast. Anxious to get my hands on one of these beasts so we can tear the engine apart and see what we can do to make it faster Edit: vvv pump gas engines are going to reignite the 1/8 monster truck market. I'm pretty pumped about the coming gas monster truck wars. The public is pretty hot too because all our gas articles on Big Squid do big numbers. In the battle of the HPI Octane vs. Losi LSTXXL I think the monster truck basher is the winner. And yeah, the gas engine's reliability and relatively ease of use (versus nitros notorious headache) is my main advantage. And yeah, pump gas is much easier to get a hold of. I really hope those smaller gas engines turn out to work well....because I want to mount at least two of them on a tractor chassis  Hey Krushgroove, have you got any hands on time with the Octane?Hey Howser, shoot me a pm. The motor looks like a version of the OS 15cc engine used in different forms in helis and airplanes...cool! They seem to be superior to the Evolution engines that have the nitro style carburetor. Walbro carbs are the way to go.

Because when you hit something in your RC car, 9 times out of 10 it will be a wheel that will be copping the impact. With metal parts, they either bend out of shape, throwing the car's balance and setup out the window, or worse, send the impact further down into the chassis, either tweaking or in worse case breaking the chassis. Think of it as a circuit breaker, with some cars an exploding clutch is far better than a busted gear box, with RC cars it is better to break a front knuckle or C-hub or upright than have to replace a bulk head or toe block. Stick with plastic parts, it is cheaper, and it doesn't take long to replace an upright or knuckle or even an arm.

We didn't get to see it at top speed, so don't ask how fast it can go. I wouldn't say it will be as fast or as nimble as a Savage 4.6, because that is much lighter, has a shorter wheelbase, etc., but on the flip side it will be more stable and easier to drive. Think of how the XL handles and drives compared to the 4.6, and the XL has a 5.9 engine too. And there's a bonus: they should start shipping in the next month or so. Somewhat Heroic - was good to meet you, and we got past that awkward 'hey, I know you from Something Awful' phase pretty quickly  hope you enjoyed the show!

Figured that leading with 'do you have stairs' would have been a bad lead in. The booth looked great, definitely one of the premier ones on display (the tamiya booth! Unnnffhh). I preordered some of the new WR8 ken block cars when I got back! Re: gas monster truck wars, didn't realize at first but the Losi truck is .31 cubic inch, or about 5cc, and the Octane is 16cc...  game over for the Losi boys, keep your nitro converted gasser with a stupid carb. Electronic ignition + Walbro carb = effortless starting all day every day.

I'm constantly surprised/annoyed at how expensive onroad tires are. I just spent $120 on 4 sets of tires. The drat kit itself was $140. I feel like I should jump ship to drifting so all I have to do is buy a bigass PVC pole.
