I just got Windows 7 Professional x64 from MSDNAA. It's been awesome so far, but one major problem for me is that I cannot connect to my campus's WPA-Enterprise secured wireless network. When I choose the option 'WPA-Enterprise' and method 'Microsoft PEAP', I am not even prompted for a username/password/domain. When I choose the method 'Cisco: PEAP', I am also unable to connect because it only allows me to enter a username/password, but no domain (I tried 'DOMAIN\username' with no luck). I have all the latest drivers installed; aside from contacting my campus administrators and getting told that they don't support Windows 7 yet, what can I do? On Vista, when I selected WPA-Enterprise and method PEAP, it asked me for a username, password AND domain name. The domain is required to log on, but the computer does not have to join the domain. EDIT: And I have made sure to tell it not to use my Windows login username or password. gently caress, this is confusing and infuriating. queztal fucked around with this message at 18:23 on Sep 3, 2009 |

I got 2 win 7 systems, both are 64bit. On the system control panel my C2D with 7201 says Memory: 4.00Gb (2.94Gb available), it reports 3001Mb in the task manager. Where my C2Q with 7100 says Memory: 8.00Gb and reports it all in the task manager. The C2D has my old 7900gs so no shared video memory. I don't know why its not using all 4Gb of ram. Could it be something wrong with the ram? I swear it used all 4gb before. Or maybe 7201 could be weird since its a internal build?

When you click setting next to PEAP does everything look alright? Do you need to authenticate against a different server? Is your authenication method set to what your school uses? Do you have it set to automatically use your windows login?

Is it possible to de-link a product key from a Windows 7 install? Example: If I buy a Windows 7 32-bit product key, but later decide I want to upgrade that computer to Windows 7 64-bit, can I buy a new 64 bit Windows 7 key, install 64 bit Win 7, and then use my old 32 bit win 7 key to activate the 32 bit version on a different computer?

I have it set up just like it was on Vista (to my knowledge), and it simply does not work--Windows is not providing me with the authentication pop-up when I select PEAP.

It would be simpler to install 64bit using the same key as you used to install 32bit on the same hardware, then install either the 64bit or 32bit version on the other computer using your new key. Win7 keys work on both 64bit and 32bit Win7 and you get both discs when you buy a copy.

I'm running Windows 7 on a machine with a passive cooled Gigabyte 9600GT. The card automatically overclocks when under load from 450/750 to about 720/1000, or at least that's what it used to do when I ran Windows XP. Now it runs at 720/1000 all the time, I'm guessing because it uses hardware acceleration to run Aero. Can I somehow make it run Aero on lower clock speeds? I'm probably being retarded about this, but it runs a few degrees hotter when it uses the higher clock speeds, and I would like it to run cooler when I'm not gaming or whatever.

Always install the newest OS last, it should pick up the older one and automatically configure the boot process for you.

So I was a big baby and got the 32bit version of the RC because I had the 32bit version of 7000, back long before I thought I'd upgrade my RAM anytime soon, and I didn't want to clean install the RC. But whatever. Is my only available avenue for getting 64bit RC from a random torrent I need to hope is legitimate?

Black Pants posted:I assumed asking about where I could get the RTM is fairly I wouldn't think so, since the part you're supposed to pay for is actually the product key, not the discs or disc images. Without one, even if you just torrented the RTM, chances are you wouldn't be able to use it for more than a few months. If you're not buying it, then I would of course go for the RC if you really want to try it out, that will at least last until June I believe. Anyway, to answer your question, your main method of getting the 64 bit RC really should be straight from Microsoft, if they're still offering it for download. Otherwise, just get it from a torrent site and make sure to check the MD5 or SHA1 hashes against what we've posted here, and if they match you're good to go (the RC is build 7100 by the way).

I finally got around to testing out Windows 7 on one of my home machines - it looks pretty excellent so far. There are a few minor things which bug me a little but I know I'll get used to them in time. However, one thing I can't see myself getting used to is the way Windows 7 tries to make windows take up half the screen when all you want to do is manually resize them to be up against the edge of the screen. Please tell me there's some way to disable this feature.

I'm about to install Windows 7 on my home computer (which I haven't used much since I got my laptop for school). I've had 32-bit Vista on it for awhile but it's gotten to be waaay too slow, taking around 15min to boot and at least a minute to load any application. Anyway, I've got a 1TB hard drive and I'm going to put all my data on there and format my old C drive and install Windows 7 on there. I only meet the minimum requirements though, 2Ghz 64bit AMD processor and 2GB of RAM. Do yall think I can run Windows 7 Ultimate at a reasonable speed or should I wait and upgrade my hardware before going with it?

I'm using W7 Ultimate 64-bit on an AMD laptop that has hardware from 2006 (2 GHz Turion, 2 GB DDR2) and it speeds along quite well. If W7 can run on a netbook, it can certainly run on that. There's definitely a big difference when going form 2 GB of RAM to 4 GB of RAM, correct? I'm maxing the RAM out because it's cheap and I needed more RAM for Premiere Pro anyways. I'm using 64-bit so I'll be able to address the full 4 GB.

I have literally never accidentally triggered the snap-to-half-screen feature and I'm constantly resizing windows up against the edge of the screen. It only activates when your mouse cursor hits the edge, so just don't grab the window at the left (or right depending on which edge you're going for) side of the titlebar. My own question: I just today moved from 7100 to RTM Professional. On 7100 every time UAC triggered for admin privleges, I'd have to type in my admin accounts password (I use a standard account for day-to-day stuff). On RTM it doesn't prompt me for a password or even to select my admin account. It just pops up the UAC confirmation dialog. I made sure the UAC slider was all the way at the top, so why is it doing this? Thermopyle fucked around with this message at 22:09 on Sep 5, 2009 |

Ok, this was odd. Installed the ATI 9.8 drivers today which may or may not have had anything to do with it, but some 4 hours later after a game of the new Wolfenstein, I'm just sat here on IRC and forums, and my screen blanks out and comes back in non-aero mode, then my graphics card fan kicks in. I pop into task manager and find WinSAT.exe at 50% CPU, kill it, and Aero comes back. A quick google shows that it's part of the windows experience rating stuff, but why did it just launch on it's own in the background for no good reason?
