My home LAN has a few XP machines and a Mac (Snow Leopard), networked wirelessly.

Is there something I can use to move files around from machine to machine that isn't as hideously slow as SMB? It takes something like 10+ minutes to move a single 1GB file, when I can download the same file from the internet in about a minute.

Upgrading the XP boxes isn't an option so no SMB 2.0. I could install an ftp server on my media server but something a little more straightforward would be nice, especially when guests come over and such.

Unjoin the server from the domain temporarily and set the password then. By default 2008 requires complex passwords, though, so you'll need to tweak that with local policy.

The fix for this was to implement Fine-Grained Password Policy to allow for multiple password complexity levels in the domain. You can't change the Password Policy GPO any other way by design it turns out.

SMB 2.0 won't help you, because it's optimized for multiple small files and slow/unreliable links. I would be blaming the wireless. 13 megabits/second (the equivalent of 1 GB of data in 10 minutes) isn't that great, but if you're running an 802.11G network it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that the network is the problem, especially if you're transferring between two computers, both on wireless.

Downloading that same file in about a minute gives you a speed of 130 megabits/second, which is pretty much unheard of in the US, so you're either in a socialist utopia or incorrect about how long that takes. Regardless, you're not getting that kind of speed over wireless, pretty much no matter what.

I had a windows OEM installed on this craigslist computer I purchased, and the license recently lost its validity or something. It was fine for awhile and now windows pops up all the jazz about the license being invald. Fine.

I'll just buy a new license. But, looking on Amazon and college store sites, the non-oem licenses run for 200 bux a pop. Is there a place where most people buy licenses for windows for cheaper than that? Or should I just accept this price.

Try the phone activation. This happened to me once, and I had to go through the mostly painless phone activation to get Windows to recognize my key. No idea why it happened.

Ok I'll try that. But, now I'm trying to figure out how to get to a _phone activation_ screen at all in windows. I know what it looks like, but right now it's only giving me the option to resolve online (i.e. pay 200 bux).

update: Tried the automated phone system and it said the key was invalid. Purchased another laptop to use primarily and decided to throw this one up on craigslist -but I'll assume I an't sell it for the price I want so I'll probably get a key for this one sometime later or use one of my xp keys if I feel need be.

If there's a better place to ask this, I'm sorry and please point me in the right direction.

I have a small lab with around 30 computers running XP. Unfortunately, they are all on a semi-public wireless network, and there's nothing I can do about it.

I have been trying to come up with a way to basically wipe and changes made to these computers - maybe every evening, or every 6 hours or something. The computers are available to students, so everything gets changed - taskbar size, desktop settings, random files saved all over the place.

If anyone has any suggestions, they would be much appreciated!

You can pick it up at Amazon or Newegg for like $90. Search for OEM System Builder. If you know any students, usually they can get an upgrade version for $30.

I've been trying to hibernate my computer when not using it and when I come back to it, my network connection doesn't work 90% of the time and I have to reboot to make it work. Thus making hibernate useless.

This seems to be a common issue after doing some searching. Has anyone else come across this issue and fixed it?

Does anyone know of a way to change the shortcut keys for Windows Snap? My dilemma is this: I have two monitors, so I can't snap open windows to the left of the right hand monitor or the right of the left hand monitor using the mouse, but have to rely instead on the 'Windows key'+'Left/Right arrow' shortcut to snap windows to the centre of my dual display. This would be fine, but I also like to play games, and as I'm sure most of you know, accidentally hitting the windows key in-game (particularly in FPS's) can be maddening.

A simple app that disables the Windows key when it detects that a game has been launched would be great, but even better would be a way to change that shortcut so that it employs some other key combination (e.g. 'Insert'+'Left/Right arrow') and I can disable the Windows key permanently. My googling attempts have so far turned up nothing but others like me searching (in vain) for the same solution. Perhaps this is a job for the 'Request a tiny custom app' thread?

Apologies if I'm covering old ground here.

I'm currently running Windows 7 on an old PC and I'm going to be building an entirely new computer in the near future. Am I correct in assuming that I will have little trouble installing my current Windows 7 retail disc on that new computer? Format old computer -> reinstall on new computer. Will I have to do some sort of phone activation or something?

Don't do that. Clone the old hard drive to the new hard drive, no reinstall needed.

My brother in law bought a lap-top from Wal-Mart; it was the floor model and came with no software and had this sketchy dos prompt password protection that had to be hacked by a specialist before he could use it (Wal-Mart didn't mention that part when he bought it), and has had some issues but not much since purchase.

The issues were not halting, of course, until now. Recently he purchased and installed Microsoft Office, and when he tried to verify it, he suddenly could not connect to the internet. I had them boot up in safe mode with networking and he still cannot access the internet.

I had him roll his system back before he installed Microsoft Office, but the problem persisted. I also have not had him reinstall Microsoft Office.

I thought it could be because of his McAfee firewall, but I don't use McAfee and I don't live by them.

My thoughts now are that he needs to format his computer, but because he has no software he'll need to buy Windows 7 and I'd like to avoid making them buy 100 dollar software unless it's necessary.

It needs one, so either the DHCP server on the network isn't giving you an IP address, or if there isn't a DHCP server, and you need to statically assign an IP + set DNS + set Gateway.

Anyone know of any sort of 'pretty' / gui alternatives to Robocopy? Specifically, I'm looking for a program that we can use in front of clients that's reliable and we can leave over the weekend without fear of it stopping (we regularly migrate 10+ terabytes between storage solutions).

So far I've seen SecureCopy by ScriptLogic (a Quest subsidiary) but the licensing model is loving ridiculous, you have to name the source and target server as part of your license, great lot of good for my needs >(

Apart from licensing that's exactly what I'm after...

Suggestions?

I seemed to recall a sysinternals (or something like that) GUI version of Robocopy. I just did a search for Robocopy GUI, via that I found RichCopy which is supposed to be a new improved version.

I haven't used either RobocopyGUI or Richcopy, but thought I would pass in on in case you want to try it.

Does anyone know of a utility that can accept a directory (or collection of directories) in Windows, and recursively search for video files with less than a specified resolution? I have a bunch of new and old video rips around of varying quality, and I want to figure out which ones are less than 720p, so I can re-do them in high-def.

In Win7 I can just search for files under 200MB and filter by type, which is crude yet somewhat effective -- but I can't then export that list of found files as a text document for later reference.

I've used both. I'd stay away from Richcopy unless you are babysitting it. It's an internal only product and has some nasty show-stopper bugs. Like it just will randomly fail to work and nothing you can do will fix it. Robocopy is solid and has been partially supported for years. It even comes with Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. I personally have gotten used to the command line version and it really isn't that bad. The gui is just a script wrapper interface that writes the commands for you, but from what I've seen it only works with older versions (from Server 2003).

In Windows XP I want to backup everything, around 150gb spread over 3 drives onto one external hard drive. I tried what seemed to be the most basic and obvious solution. I created 3 folders on the external drive and then for each drive I wanted to copy I tried ctrl+a, ctrl+c, ctrl+v. Some things were copied over from one of the drives but a message box popped up saying "error copying file or folder cannot copy file: ". Thats all it had, it didn't say which file name.

Adding "frameheight:<720" to your query would be the proper way if you're using Windows 7's search, though I'm not sure if all codecs are supported. Things like exporting search results are probably best done by alternative file managers like Xplorer2, which has a free lite edition on their website.

So it works - just not as obvious as I thought it would be. But I'll take it. Thanks!

I'm looking for a dead simple media player application for my parents, who are about as technically challenged as they come. Basically the UI that I want should have big rear end, really simple buttons for them to mash so the application does what they want. Here's an example of what I'm looking for:

Features I'm looking for:
  • Audio CD Playback
  • Playback of commonly used audio files (i.e. MP3, WMA) I don't care about OGG/FLAC/Whatever support
  • Playback of common video files. The Common Community Codec Pack is installed.
  • Basic equalizer (not a deal breaker)
  • Dead simple audio CD ripping to MP3 (not a deal breaker)
I've taken a look at Amarok (no stable Windows version), Zoom Player, Winamp, musikcube, and Media Player Classic. MPC is close to what I want, but it's still too complicated them.

The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

Thanks!

If WMP is too complicated for them, your best hope is to put a shortcut on the desktop to the folder housing their music collection, change it to icon view, and set icon size to LARGE.

Then they can just double click the song they want to play.

Honestly almost every single media player is going to have playlist support and other features that will scare them, you'll just need to teach them what buttons to push. Alternatively, add their music to a playlist for them and then show them how to double click ?
