On XP Compatibility mode in the OP, how true is the "you won't be running any games on this" statement? I just got a new laptop with 7 Home Premium 64-bit but a license for Ultimate is $20 through my university. I don't have anything terribly demanding (Morrowind is the newest game that I own a physical copy of, and GOG.com is working to make all their games 7-compatible). I guess what I'm wondering is what's more difficult- getting a older game to run in Win7, or getting an older game to run WELL in XP Mode?

For Windows 7's automatic wallpaper shuffler, is there a way to display some images one way and some images another way within the same "album"? I have a few pictures that, with Wallpaper Master on my old XP machine, would be scaled down to fit the resolution of my screen while maintaining the proper aspect ratio (and just filling in the extra space with a solid color like black). So I had a playlist where it would shuffle through a bunch of different images; the ones that were actual wallpapers would be displayed in Stretch and the pictures in Resize. CONVERSELY, is there an easy-to-use image making program I could grab for free and use to make Resize wallpapers out of these pictures? I had Gimp on my old machine but never really understood how to use it (or really used it that much, for that matter)

I'm getting my girlfriend a Windows 7 netbook for her birthday and as part of my "present" to her I'm going to set it up for her. My current plan is merely: 1. http://pcdecrapifier.com/ 2. http://ninite.com/ Any other recommendations? She's also a long-time OS X user, so anything to make the Mac -> Windows transition easier for her would be appreciated.

How is OpenOffice these days? I got my gf a netbook for her birthday and all I really need to do to finish setting it up is install some type of Office suite. It comes with a trial of MS Office '10 but I sunk enough money into this thing that I'm not in the mood to pay an extra $100 right now. I had OO on my old laptop and it ran alright though it got pretty slow at times (though it could have been my machine, which was on its last legs). Has it improved significantly as of late, or should I figure out how to get a cheap license from my university?

I'm getting ready to finally give my GF her new netbook, and I'm trying to think of any other security/make-computer-run-well programs to install. I have MSE and Malwarebytes for security, CCleaner for...well, cleaning, Secunia PSI for tracking updates and HDGraph to give her an easy way to check out her hard disk's components. Anything else a Mac -> Windows convert might want? Also, does anyone happen to have a link to the last good freeware games thread around here? A weird thing happened to me this morning- last night my computer installed some Windows updates while I was shutting it down, and this morning I boot 'er up and it loads a "temporary profile", where everything basically looked the same as the day I first bought it. Naturally I flipped a poo poo (especially because I back it up once a month, with the next one being...tomorrow) and shut it down again, and when I booted it back up everything was as it was. Naturally I'm glad I didn't have to restore everything, but what did I just witness?

My girlfriend called me to tell me that her netbook's keyboard suddenly won't respond to repeated presses of the same button, for instance she can't type a word like "see" as the second "e" won't appear. It's the same for all keys too, so pressing backspace twice in a row only deletes one character. She says that "some window popped up and [I] clicked on it without really reading it", and after the initial  I have no loving clue what she's talking about. Windows 7 x64 on an HP dm1z netbook, what's going on?EDIT: She said something popped up about "sticky key" but gently caress if I can get her to explain it. An optional update for my Intel processor's graphics chip showed up for me the other day in Windows Update, but while downloading/installing it my computer locked up and now it says the update failed and I can't find a way to re-attempt it. Any ideas?

After installing the Intel graphics driver a goon that I needed, I can't play video files in any media player (Windows Media Player, latest version of VLC, DivX etc.) without the display switching to Windows 7 Basic and telling me that a running program isn't compatible with my current Windows setup. Oh yeah, and the video doesn't actually play although the sound for the video does (and VLC will still play audio files). Any ideas? I updated to the latest version of VLC but that didn't help. E: It still plays stuff on Youtube (audio and video) and games seem to be unaffected, FWIW E2: After uninstalling VLC, cleaning my registry, restarting my laptop and re-installing VLC it still does this, as well as still doing it in WMP so I think it's a hardware issue more than anything. I was trying to play source videos for a few LPs and while I can play them on their original hosts the source videos don't work.

My dad's laptop (running Vista?) has what he call the Win32 virus. I haven't taken a look at it yet but he wants me to fix it while I'm home. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and how to fix it? I installed MSE, Malwarebytes, and CCleaner on his laptop when he got it and was planning on just running those as the trio usually fixes any problems I have with my own laptop.

When setting up my GF's netbook a while back, I installed Microsoft Security Essentials for her. I was playing around with it today and noticed she somehow installed McAfee as well. I know having multiple antivirus programs is bad since they don't play nice with one another, and I also know that uninstalling antivirus programs is a little complicated. How should I set this right? Uninstall McAfee like usual, then run something like CCleaner to wipe its registry entries? VV I think it's just Security Scan Plus, like you said. GF just bought herself a refurbished desktop (Windows 7 64-bit) and I'm going to visit her and help set it up this weekend. Any recommendations for good ways to put useful things on there while clearing out the bad/useless stuff? I already know about http://ninite.com/ but I also found http://www.iobit.com/ in my laptop's bookmarks and am not sure how much to trust it. Any other websites that have similar functions to those?

Asked this in another thread, got no response so I'll ask here- I played around with Media Monkey today during some work downtime and I like it a lot, when I got a new laptop a couple years ago my music collection was really sloppy and this has really helped me put it back together. Especially because I'm really obsessive about making sure everything has the correct album, artist, and art (and I stopped using iTunes when I stopped using my old iPod, though I generally liked that program). A couple questions: -When you save a cover art to a song, is that somehow associated with the actual audio file itself? Like, if I take that file and move it to another device that cover art will be retained? -Is there any way to set certain songs to only play when you select them (AKA excluding them from Shuffle)? I'm thinking of how songs in iTunes have checkboxes that will determine whether or not a song gets synced/comes up on shuffle. -Once I've made a nice organized list of songs in Media Monkey, is there a way to have it make a folder with copies of all those files, arranged as nicely as they are? Or to export an album (or group of albums) to a new folder?

How do I get Skype to stop turning down the volume on things when I take calls? I was listening to something in Media Monkey, paused it to take a call, and when I went back the volume was cut in half and I couldn't put it back to normal without exiting the program. I think Skype's done this once or twice with Youtube videos too, where I couldn't revert their volume levels with reloading the page. Is it an issue with the timing, like if there's no other audio around when I answer or end the call then Skype won't adjust any audio levels? Skype has an "automatically adjust speaker settings" that was enabled, but that's kind of a vague description so I'm not sure.

In Windows 7, is there a way to look at all or part of your hard disk to see the files that were most recently created or edited? My GF's brother is staying with her this week and she turned on her computer to find a bunch of porn pop-up ads earlier today. While she was able to make it stop, we suspect that he was doing some illicit poo poo on her laptop but he was smart enough to wipe her browser's (Chrome) history. Any other way we could see if he downloaded something he shouldn't have to her computer? I spent a lot of time helping her shop for it and setting it up to run smoothly and I'll be very cross if he messed that up somehow.

In Word 2010, how do you format your page numbers such that they're in varying styles throughout the document? I'm putting the finishing touches on my Master's thesis and the university has kind of an obnoxious way they want the page numbers: -The title page is "page 1", but has no actual page number, so the first numbered page is the one immediately after the title page and it has the number 2. -The front matter (abstract, table of contents etc.) is denoted by Roman numerals, with the page right after the title page being numbered ii. -The first page of the writing itself is numbered 1, and the document stays on Arabic numerals the rest of the way. So far I've figured out the first part, but I seemingly can't edit the contents of one footer without editing them all. Any help? Is there a proper MS Office thread elsewhere?

Is there a way to get Windows 7 to not go to sleep/hibernate when watching video? Or should I just jack up the wait time before the screen turns off? My girlfriend likes to watch Netflix on her desktop (which is hooked up to a TV screen) and she forgets to jiggle the mouse every so often to keep the screen on, and sometimes the desktop doesn't wake back up for whatever reason, which gets annoying. E: Jacking up the screen saver wait time doesn't work, and none of the power saving menus that I looked at give any indication that the computer is supposed to go to sleep at all. What the hell? Are AVG and Avast! still the best choices for free antivirus software not named Microsoft Security Essentials? I'm having a very tough time getting my computer to install MSE after a borked Windows update and I'm ready to just say gently caress it and install something else. The goon who helped me for most of the thread also recommended the free version of bitdefender, which I hadn't heard of before.

Yes, and a screwed-up Windows Update run has left my machine unable to install MSE for some mysterious reason (read the HOTS thread I posted, it's really bizarre), hence why I'm looking for something non-MSE. I'll just try Avast! instead.

Does the PC Decrapifier still do a good job with machines that aren't really brand-new? I've fallen off of keeping an eye on my girlfriend's Windows 7 machine and it suddenly has a lot of annoying, but probably harmless, extra crap programs on it. Will PC Decrapifier catch things that weren't pre-installed?

Any idea as to why Skype is longer detecting my laptop's webcam? Admittedly I hadn't tried to make a video call for a week or two, but when I tried one last night it said I had no webcam installed. Other software on my computer can detect it and is outputting video like normal so I assume it's a problem with Skype, not the camera. Was there some sort of update put out recently? E: Uninstalled Skype, cleaned out the registry with CCleaner, rebooted and reinstalled. First video call starts dialing then crashes Skype, then subsequent attempts to call don't recognize the camera. It doesn't even recognize that I have one in any of the menus
