Maybe there's a way to fix it, but I found Instantbird's taking of focus incredibly annoying. It would minimize games I was playing in order to show me I got a message on MSN.

The upgrade option in the Windows 8 install is quite simple to use. You shouldn't need to change any options from the get-go, but maybe following the TweakGuide for Windows 8 will help. The first things I did were changing the power options and installing Classic Shell (if that's your thing.)
