was it confirmed you can get away wait no key install for W7 like you can in vista then load up the key post install? Does this effectively means they are selling windows 7 for 100 dollars?

You're upgrading vista right? It took a looonnngg time to upgrade my vista to win 7. I would advise stripping out the drivers for the motherboard, the video card, and sound and using the generic drivers that ship with vista (using driver sweep to clean all references of the mobo chipset, sound, and video card). Try installing win 7 without giving it a key as well.

I've helped a few people with vista install issues that are similar to yours. Try moving your DIMMs around (you said you just removed one), if your motherboard has a different SATA controller (i.e intel and a jmicron) switch the HD to that, turn off AHCI in the bios, popping the bios battery out to clear helped a lot. If your overclocking, return the system to stock. One extreme scenario required preinstall on a different computer, and after the reboot phase take it back to your computer. e: Also make sure to MD5 checksum the iso you downloaded. incoherent fucked around with this message at 02:53 on Oct 5, 2009 |

PoapSoap posted:I was given a free copy of Windows 7 Professional by my school. One of the things I was really looking forward to with 7 was the XP mode. I downloaded the XP Image and the virtual machine, and frankly I'm disappointed. The only thing I really like about the XP mode is the supposed ability to run software installed under XP mode directly through 7 (Although I haven't done this yet. Of course this was over a month ago, and I didn't really test it out much. Maybe It's just me, but I prefer to just use virtual box for all my virtual machine needs. I might try it out again. Its not nearly as fast as say VMware workstation. Its a stop gap solution for businesses running XP/IE6 based software so microsoft can push them off that mortal coil that is XP.

Arctic Silver, NT-H1, even MX-3 (this stuff is the thermal paste of the gods) I'd recommend Céramique because its non-conductive (if you get this on the logic board it will not kill it) and if this is your first time doing this you don't have to worry about getting messy. In fact for all first time builders I tell them to use this first till they get the hang of installation. Just remember proper cleaning techniques (clean it off with high-purity isopropyl alcohol AKA the 90% rubbing alcohol). incoherent fucked around with this message at 04:30 on Oct 12, 2009 |

I don't care if I have to re-format and install in order to get Windows 7 on there, but can I go from Server 2008 x64 -> Windows 7 x64, or do I have to format -> XP -> 7? GENUINE CAT HERDER posted:Stupid question that's probably been answered, but I haven't been able to find it after scanning back several pages in the thread: Coming from a person who upgraded their vista with a RTM copy of win 7, there is no discernible issues between a fresh install and a upgrade. My computer boots faster, runs faster, jumps higher then before the install. The song and dance of backing up my programs, doing a fresh install, and do the reinstall of everything made me want to break things. I had reservations mind you and am normally a propoenent of doing a fesh install (all those botched 98-ME 98-xp upgrades ) but it was smooth and seemless. Windows told me that specific programs would not be available (like inkblot and dreamscene) and i'd have to upgrade magic ISO. 7 had all my drivers ready to go and whatever it didn't, just used my vista drives till it went to windows update or being the OCD fiend, update them myself. Your only downside will be you have to install vista first, then window 7 if you need to reinstall fresh. I caution making sure you delete the vista backup it does after you go through and make sure everything is ok, it take like 10GB or so. incoherent fucked around with this message at 06:18 on Oct 20, 2009 |

The downside is the verification of the O/S before install. You wouldn't have to worry with a full version and you can pop the install disk right in and go right to the installing.

Pyr0 posted:People I know have been scaring me about upgrading from XP Pro to Win7 Home Premium 64bit. I previously thought that there was some sort of archive and install option that moved everything into a folder called "windows.old" and then wiped everything and did a fresh install, leaving all my files and folders intact in the .old folder. However people are now saying that this isn't possible, and that i'd have to go through this lovely process: http://www.nirmaltv.com/2009/08/06/how-to-upgrade-windows-xp-to-windows-7/ Remember, its largely copying your my documents, preferences, and configuration files. This will be significantly smaller then the sum of your windows install. I advise going through the easy transfer wizard and seeing how much space you'll actually need vs what is currently being used. Or you can do a slimebag thing of going out to target, getting the largest cheapest external HD, back poo poo up, and return the HD (they are really cheap like 80 bucks or so).

Setup each program run as an administrator by right clicking the program->properties and going to the compatibility tab and ticking the box "run as administrator".
