Q. Does Cisco provide a VPN Client for Windows Vista?

A. Cisco VPN Client Version 5 is available for 32-bit Windows Vista. There are no current plans to provide 64-bit support for the Cisco VPN Client but 64-bit support is available for the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. This client and release notes can be obtained from the Software Center (registered customers only) .

Note: Cisco VPN Client is only supported on Windows Vista clean install. It means that an upgrade of Windows of any OS to Windows Vista is not supported with the VPN Client Software of this Vista. You must freshly install the Windows Vista and try to install the Vista VPN Client software.

Note: If you do not have a valid service contract associated with your Cisco.com profile you cannot log in and download the VPN Client software. See Download VPN Client Software for more information.

Tip: The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client is now available for the Windows Operating Systems, which includes Vista 32 and 64-bit. The AnyConnect client supports SSL and DTLS. It does not support IPSec at this time. Additionally, AnyConnect is available only for use with a Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance that runs version 8.0(2) or later. The client can also be used in weblaunch mode with IOS appliances running version 12.4(15)T. VPN 3000 is not supported.

The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client and ASA 8.0 can be obtained from the Software Center (registered customers only) . Refer to the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client Release Notes for more information on the AnyConnect Client. Refer to the Cisco ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances Release Notes for more information on ASA 8.0.

Note: If you do not have a valid service contract associated with your Cisco.com profile you cannot log in and download the AnyConnect VPN Client or ASA software. See Download VPN Client Software for more information.
You MIGHT get away with XP mode or continuing to use 32bit win7 which is fine for 90% of most end user business applications.

You're upgrading vista right? It took a looonnngg time to upgrade my vista to win 7. I would advise stripping out the drivers for the motherboard, the video card, and sound and using the generic drivers that ship with vista (using driver sweep to clean all references of the mobo chipset, sound, and video card).

Try installing win 7 without giving it a key as well.

I've helped a few people with vista install issues that are similar to yours. Try moving your DIMMs around (you said you just removed one), if your motherboard has a different SATA controller (i.e intel and a jmicron) switch the HD to that, turn off AHCI in the bios, popping the bios battery out to clear helped a lot. If your overclocking, return the system to stock.

One extreme scenario required preinstall on a different computer, and after the reboot phase take it back to your computer.

e: Also make sure to MD5 checksum the iso you downloaded.

In fact for all first time builders I tell them to use this first till they get the hang of installation.

Just remember proper cleaning techniques (clean it off with high-purity isopropyl alcohol AKA the 90% rubbing alcohol).

Stupid question that's probably been answered, but I haven't been able to find it after scanning back several pages in the thread:

I just purchased a new system and with it purchased a copy of 64bit Vista Home that has an upgrade coupon to Windows 7 (for some weird reason I mixed up the release date and thought that the final version of 7 wouldn't be out for another month or so). As such, my question is that is it a better idea to send back the version of Vista I just bought (still unopened) and purchase a fresh copy of Windows 7, or will simply upgrading to 7 in a month or so when the upgrade becomes available be sufficient and cause no outstanding problems and have all the same features as the regular retail version?

Coming from a person who upgraded their vista with a RTM copy of win 7, there is no discernible issues between a fresh install and a upgrade. My computer boots faster, runs faster, jumps higher then before the install. The song and dance of backing up my programs, doing a fresh install, and do the reinstall of everything made me want to break things.

I had reservations mind you and am normally a propoenent of doing a fesh install (all those botched 98-ME 98-xp upgrades :gonk:) but it was smooth and seemless. Windows told me that specific programs would not be available (like inkblot and dreamscene) and i'd have to upgrade magic ISO. 7 had all my drivers ready to go and whatever it didn't, just used my vista drives till it went to windows update or being the OCD fiend, update them myself. Your only downside will be you have to install vista first, then window 7 if you need to reinstall fresh.

I caution making sure you delete the vista backup it does after you go through and make sure everything is ok, it take like 10GB or so.

However people are now saying that this isn't possible, and that i'd have to go through this lovely process: http://www.nirmaltv.com/2009/08/06/how-to-upgrade-windows-xp-to-windows-7/

The problem is that I don't have an external hard drive at the moment so I can't really back anything up. So my question is: Can I do an upgrade from XP that shoves everything into this .old folder or do I need some sort of external storage to preserve my files?

Remember, its largely copying your my documents, preferences, and configuration files. This will be significantly smaller then the sum of your windows install. I advise going through the easy transfer wizard and seeing how much space you'll actually need vs what is currently being used.

Or you can do a slimebag thing of going out to target, getting the largest cheapest external HD, back poo poo up, and return the HD (they are really cheap like 80 bucks or so).

Easytune I can understand, as it requires a lot of access to the hardware directly, which makes UAC nag. For steam games, go to the steam program folder and find each programs folder. Setup each program run as an administrator by right clicking the program->properties and going to the compatibility tab and ticking the box "run as administrator".
