Back when I got the car last summer first thing I did was throw an oil catch can on it since throwing oil down the intake is dumb on many fronts. However the piping supplied was too short so it was at an odd angle but it worked so whatever. I finally remembered about this so went out to get some replacement rubber pipe so it would sit correctly. Four parts stores later I was able to find the correct size and grade of hose for hot oil on a drum so I could cut the correct length of it. I ended up going to an Autozone, two Advanced Autoparts before a Pepboys had some. One of the Advance Autoparts places had trouble understanding I just wanted some hose not a specific hose for my car, going as far as to search for the year and model and say there was no oil catch pipe in the parts list. This would of course not happened if the supplier sent the right length hose to begin with and didn't believe me when I said it was too short as they claimed everything was cut on a jig to be exactly right blah blah blah.

So yes a simple job turned into a journey into why doing anything to a car is like pulling teeth.

Went autocrossing in the Challenger and after my abysmal first run managed to drop 39 seconds to be within 4 seconds of the class winner on my first event. No way near any of the non novice drivers in modified Miatas and CRXs but it finally let me drive the car hard and by my 6th and last run of the day had figured out that the steering was too slow by itself so had to steer using the throttle. Not sure if I will do it again in the Challenger or wait until I have some space and pick up something that will be cheap to run and more competitive.

Before

After

Need to tar remover that ghost of the stickers left over.

Next it is replacing the one rotted out rocker, grinding out the other surface rust and primering it, fix the electric windows and figure out the issue with the heat that seems to happen with these things.

Picked it up for $2k this week as a winter beater and for hauling crap about. Going to be closer to $4k by the time it is road worthy I expect.

I am going to replace the door controls anyway since the mirrors don't work either and it is likely the same issue. The passenger window works sometimes and you can hear the motor running in the drivers so it might just have detached from the runner. The no heat problem sounds a lot like this one https://sparkys-answers.com/2012/08/2003-chevrolet-silverado-blower-does.html so that is going to be fun.

Replaced the ignition module on the Winter Slag and the blower now blows on setting 2 and 4 so we are getting some where. Other investigations lead to pretty much swapping out a bunch of other switches for that system. Pulled the door card off and found that the drivers side window was attached to the runner however the motor was spinning but not connected to anything internally so seems pretty shafted. Replaced some missing trim and ground out and etch primered a bunch of surface rust and WD40'd the bolts that hold the rear bumper on so they should be more happy to come out when the replacement arrives later this week.

With the electrical stuff I am going to have an auto electrician take a look at this point while I wait for a new window motor to arrive. Also need to fix the washer bottle that leaks when you try to clean the windows and book it in for the rotten rocker to be cut out and replaced and patch a hole in the bed. With that and the new winter wheels and tyres arriving next week it should be good for inspection and registering. Probably going to be around $5k all in when it is on the road.

Replaced a bunch of switches in the Silverretardo and it now has a battery drain so is dead. Having it picked up for an auto electrician to sort it out since I hate electrical work. Once that is sorted it will go to the body shop for the rocker than go get inspected.

Once that is done I can do the less annoying oily bits such as changing the fluids, filters, put the new winter tyres on and clean out the cab to try and get rid of 15 years of dirt smell.

I spent part of my weekend atoning for the sins of my Silverado's PO. It too is a five-thousand-dollar three-thousand-dollar truck (market adjustment). This weekend it was an upgrade by way of downgrade.

It came with a set of 20" wheels off a late model Tahoe and a bent tie rod so I assumed the PO clipped a curb and trashed a wheel, necessitating sick rims (and a half assed attempt to correct the alignment.) The giant wheels look cool (on a truck with zero straight body panels and peeling paint) but rode like poo poo. The tires were also marginal and I'm a cheap gently caress so it was downgrade time.

I found a set of stock 16" alloys with a pair of mostly shagged tires on Craigslist, and threw a pair of used tires with good tread on the empty rims. The truck doesn't get driven a ton so that should last me until the start of boating season.

Swapped the wheels and holy poo poo what a difference. The 20's had to weigh at least 50% more than the 16's. The truck doesn't bounce nearly as much over lovely pavement and rides quieter everywhere.

Now to see if I can flip these bigass rims. Hopefully I can get enough to cover another pair of tires for the truck and most of a set for the Subaru.

I have the standard 16" wheels with nearly bald tires so have thrown on a set of cheap American Racing steelies with winter tires from Tire Rack. Will get some summer tires on the original wheels in the Spring and all will be good. As for the electrical problem you know it is a common thing when the guy looks at the list of issues and just go "Yep this is a GM truck alright".

Started refitting the front suspension and plumbing the new master cylinder and combination vale for the front disc brakes. Made all my own lines since shockingly no one has lines for a 63 Grand Prix you are covering to a two pot master cylinder and discs.

Should get my control arms with new bushings pressed in tomorrow and can fit those and the rest of the brake system then move on to rear end to get the center section out to be rebuilt and do the rear brakes. Going to be a new car when it is done.

Finished the disc brake kit install after having to get shorter bolts for the bracket to spindle and started working on the rear end as I have a new center section and axles coming. 3 hours of torching, hammering and swearing the thing is out and I finally got a good look at the trailing arms and the passenger side one is bent a good 45 degrees in the middle, so solves the mystery of why it was lower on one side. Of course no one makes new ones apart from one guy in WI who wants $500 for a tubular set with all 4. Ehhhhh guess the wallet is opening up again.

Coilovers are due to be here tomorrow so I can finish the front end and get it back on ground and then while I wait for rear end parts to get here start grinding and cutting out the rot and plating it with my stack of license plates. Found some wiring diagrams so feeling better about trying to get the electrics working. Also found a set of the proper 63 Grand Prix grill and parking lights of ye olde ebaye for $100 which was nice.

I though about unwinding it but it has tabs to stop it fully unwinding which is why I was confused they would send it. I assume they think I can bend it over the end of the housing but there is the suspension mounts in the way. Once I have the rest of it to put together I will probably weld it in.

Dearly beloved we are here today to mourn the passing of the second set of trunk body mounts in this 1963 Pontiac. Taken from us by the poor design decisions of engineers past, no really who designs a body mount with a hole facing the back of a wheel so it throws in mud and rocks?

Going to use hockey pucks to space it and probably weld in a thick plate and have the bolt head be inside the trunk instead of a captive nut that just rusts loose. Places want $150 for a new set of the same lovely mounts.

New Hampshire being New Hampshire has basically told the Federal Govt and other states that it won't collect taxes for other states on NH based businesses. Throw in that Mass wants to still collect income taxes from people who live in NH but work in Mass usually but have been working at home in NH since March is going to be another poo poo storm. Sometimes it is funny living in Libertarians the State just to see how they rail against any and all forms of taxation.
