Almost finished with my first scale model. I've done a lot of miniature painting with wargaming stuff but never vehicles and never with an airbrush. My GF got me a cheap one for my birthday and I've been having a ball with it the last few weeks. Still have a lot to learn, but I feel like I've already picked up so much on this first model. It's a pretty cheap Tamiya T-34/76 so I don't feel so bad about doing a mediocre job on it.

Can anyone offer some tips for improving based on this? I think I junked it up more than I should have honestly. My other big problem is keeping dust and fuzzies off of it.

Welcome to the wild world of tank models. Your first one is looking pretty good, people go way further overboard on weathering, so don't worry about it. The biggest advice I can give you when working with these old kits is look at reference photos. This specific kit is a mish-mash of T-34 tanks produced in 1941-1943 with some features I've never seen even on post-war tanks, rather than any specific tank. Newer kits are a bit better at this, but there are still some easily corrected inaccuracies. Of course that's just optional, if you only care about having a cool tank on your shelf then go for it.

Another issue with these old kits is a lack of transparent pieces, this affects more modern kits too, but rarely. I suggest picking up a bottle of Mig Acrylic Crystal, it does a very good job at imitating headlights, lenses, periscopes, etc.

You might also want to pick up a set of drill bits and a pin vise at the very least to drill out machinegun barrel, again not so much of an issue on newer kits, but even on newer kits you might want to replace things like handrails with brass wire instead of the plastic part.

Thanks! I was definitely winging it more or less with the configuration, idk if many t-34s were getting applique armor like this IRL

I keep trying to make this AK metallic wax stuff work because I'm a moron.

It never works. Buffing it up for a nice shine is a cool trick, but it never applies evenly and trying to add another layer actively removes the original application.

It's visually interesting, sure, but not actually good.

I need to bite the bullet and just buy some Alclad.

can you paint this with a super fine brush to add paint scratches?

thanks for the suggestion btw, it looks way better with him right under the treads. theres a much stronger line of motion now imo

just got to patch the mud in around them, get some water effects and paint accessories, then i should be done!

Looks great, any way you can make it look like the tank is sinking into the mud a little bit? It will give the tank an illusion of weight.

i was thinking about putting some lead weights onto the bottom. then'll add in the final layer of mud and let it sink in.

i have some panzerfausts and whatnot that woll be scattered around, this guys rifle is gonna be under the tread too.

most people assemble the cockpit more or less entirely, fully paint and decal it, then close it up.in the body of the plane and mask.it off.

I think I hosed up. Primed a model, sprayed some rust colors on it, and applied chipping fluid directly over top without varnishing the rust layer first. Can I let it sit overnight, give it a varnish coat, and then do the chipping fluid again or did I just play myself horribly?

Also I did not realize the chipping medium was so thick, it's spitting like an angry Texan at 40psi.

this should be fine? you should only be using water on the chipping coat anyway, the rust paint should hang on fine.

I'm planning on doing a DS9 build at some point. I've seen people use fiberoptic cable for the individual portholes and whatnot so they can get different colors. Is there a good guide for this, or recommended model?

Making slow but steady progress on my truck model. It has a lot of pre-chromed parts and I’ve been tossing up whether I strip it and paint the chrome myself. I’ve gotten a couple of glue fingerprints on a couple of the parts which I think has made my decision for me. I don’t have an airbrush though so I think I’ll have to get a silver aerosol.

In the meantime I used this weekend to assemble the cabin:

getting ready for final assembly, prime and painting of my Nautilus. What do yall think for coloring? I mainly rely on the Vellejo Model Color Metals. I was thinking of gunmetal all around and then building up that rusty color with oils and pigments. Definitely going for the Disney style as much as possible here. Something like this:

edit: I also have a Vallejo light rust wash that might be useful here

exactly! so many of the parts had ejector pins on the face for some reason :psyduck:

it looks like the tooling for the kit originated in 1955 which is cool since my dad is also from the 50s
