Woo! Finally, a good Scale Modeling thread pops up.

I've got 4 models in the works now; I'm waiting on some drier weather so I can get some paint on them.

So this post isn't completely worthless, here's a pic of some of my finished work:

That spitfire is the poo poo.

I got a Tamiya Miata for Hanukkah and decided to turn it into a Showroom Spec Miata car. Spent a good chunk of yesterday working on the cage. The gap in front will be closed up with the dashboard.

Shot in the dark, but does anyone have the Eunos Roadster kit? It comes with a hardtop and I'd love to get my hands on one, or at least get the part number so I can order one.

Finishing up a 1/24 scale garage I've been working on. I've got a few more little things to add (tires on the rack, more stuff on the shelf, Spec Miata racecar), but I wanted to get it off of my bench and into the cabinet. It sounds like you already have a good idea what you need. For just getting started, I'd add to make sure you get a liquid glue, and not that stuff in the tube. The liquid stuff works by melting the plastic and then letting the plastic resolidify. Because melting is about the last thing you want with transparent plastic (think chopper canopies) I'd also get a tube of superglue specifically for that stuff. I use this LePage gel superglue: its easier to work with, and its very resistant to drying out.

Aside from that, I'd just see what colors your kit needs, and go out and get that. Lots of paint need to be thinned out of the bottle, so remember to get the appropriate thinner, as well. It's been repeated in this thread, I know, but several thin coats usually looks *way* nicer than one thick one.

I'll go right along with this, but you need to be careful with superglue on clear parts. Depending on the glue, it may "frost" your parts and leave a cloudy residue on them. I've been using plain white Elmer's Glue-All on my windshields and headlights and haven't looked back.

I'm slightly color deficient so I've got a hell of a time seeing slight differences in colors. I use primarily tamiya paints and I'm going to have to mix them somehow but I'm not really sure where to begin. It's an olivey kind of color but Olive Drab is far too dark and the color is off if I mix in white, although it is closer. It's also sort of yellow-green but I'm not sure what I ought to mix in to get that color.

Any tips on paint mixing is also appreciated.

Maybe try their olive drab with some desert tan?

It's stock with the exception of the spark plug boots and the headers. Boots are vinyl tubing from a Tamiya 1/12 bike kit and the headers are hand-bent solder. The kit is a reissue of an old Monogram kit.

That looks awesome! Can you get any more pictures of the interior? Does the license plate have any significance or did you just use the default decals? It is cool to see more planes, trains, and automobiles in the thread.

It would appear that I am a huge retard and didn't take any pictures at all of the finished interior as it was waiting for the body to be done. Unfortunately, there's no real good way to get any other shots of it. Just know that it's flocked and uses all the kit parts. Well, except for the rear side windows. I managed to knock them both out while gluing the interior to the body. I panicked at first, but then just thought "gently caress it. They're rolled down."

The license plate is just one of the kit plates. The other was something along the lines of "64 GTO" which I find stupid.

The thing with the tobacco/anti-tobacco liveries is that some of them are legit. I know some countries ban tobacco advertising outright, hence the GO!!!!!!! liveries for V. Rossi's Yamahas. I will admit though, it's lovely when it's done to a model and doesn't reflect the real thing.

With the exception of the wheels/tires and exhaust, the chassis is done. Now my favorite part: bodywork!

I found this tutorial too late to use on the Gremlin: http://italianhorses.net/Tutorials/PerfectPaint/paint.htm

Alex Kustov lays down stupidly good paint on models.

Most people just shove a straw onto the nozzle of the can, and then spray it into a cup. The straw condenses the paint stream and gives it just enough time to coalesce back into a liquid. You certainly can use the method you described, but it can be a little dangerous and sometimes very messy.

Pretty much this. I've seen guys either drill out the nozzle to fit the straw or use some sticky-tack or putty to stick the straw to the nozzle. Most guys will go straight to an airbrush-ready paint jar for convenience sake. You just have to be sure to let it air out for a while to let all the propellant out of the paint.

Don't think I ever posted this here. I got tired of having no real organization of my paints, so I built this out of a 2'x4' sheet of pegboard and some 1x3s. Currently hanging in the closet next to my work area.

In my opinion it's Tamiya and Fujimi. Fujimi's newer kits are fantastic, and they have a great selection. Tamiya doesn't have nearly as many new releases, but when they do, it's usually a top notch kit. Their LaFerrari will probably be amazing. Hasegawa and Aoshima aren't bad either. Hasegawa in particular is the only manufacturer making models of the Lancia Stratos and the Lamborghini Miura, two cars I love. If you know exactly what car you want to build, I might be able to help you out more.

Seconding Tamiya here. I've only done one of their car kits (Mini), but I've done 5 or 6 of their bikes and the kits are a pleasure to build. I actually haven't built any Fujimi kits, but based on your reply, maybe I'll pick one up. I tend to build a lot of older American cars, so I usually stick to Revell and the like, but Tamiya is definitely something to look into for modern worldwide cars.

I feel the need to mention Elmer's again for gluing clear stuff. Spread Elmer's Glue-All around the edge of windshields and whatnot with a toothpick. It wipes off easily when it's still wet, dries clear, and won't fog your plastic. You need to be aware that it's not the strongest adhesive around, so make sure you get a good seal with it if you're going to be handling it a lot. I've had to redo a couple back windows...
