I only do car models and it's mostly for acrylic paints but I've been dabbling in alclad lacquers lately. I've got a Paasche VL that's been a workhorse for years. I got the kit with the 3 needles and I just leave the big one in all the time. I'm pretty sure you can pick that kit up for the top end of your range and I've been super happy with mine.

Unfortunately, the roof antennas and the grille logo decal didn't survive when I moved a couple years back but I really like the Alfa as well.

And the 240ZG looks fantastic too, you may have convinced me to pick one up for myself once 'the pile' has subsided somewhat. There's actually a different R34, an R35, a 350Z, and a Primera in the Tamiya Calsonic collection. Will I do the rest of them? Eh, maybe eventually. For now, I've got a bit of a crapkit in the form of a '69 Torino that I still need to button up and put in the case. I've done 2 versions of their R32 kit (NISMO custom edition and the Calsonic) and they're both based on that base kit that you bought. It is indeed a wonderful kit like most Tamiya fare.

Purple degreaser stuff. Super Clean, Purple Power, etc. It's all the same stuff as far as I know and I use it to strip chrome all the time. Some is more stubborn than others, but it gets the job done and doesn't seem to affect the plastic at all.

I built a 'booth' out of corrugated plastic (like what's used for yard signs), a couple 16x20 furnace filters, a bathroom fan, and some flexible duct connected to a chunk of MDF I cut to fit the window. I normally just shoot acrylics but I'll run a lacquer or enamel rattle can if I really have to. I'll just mask up and let the fan run for a while with the closet door closed.

That's a great kit. Looks like yours is the 'Street' version with the Watanabes. Looks great, man. I did the factory version a while back and was super happy with the results. Don't think I took any pictures, though. I've been in a total rut with a half-finished Revell Germany Shelby Cobra kit. Front suspension pissed me off so I took a break. Need to get back at it so I can get it cleared off the bench. Got a Fujimi 190e Evo II and the Tamiya Castrol Supra on deck.

So I started working on a Revell Germany Shelby Cobra but the front suspension was vague and annoying so I tucked it back in the box and broke out the Fujimi 190e Evo II to work on that. Instructions are 'eh' and the fit is kind of annoying. Tucked it back in the box and finally cracked open the Tamiya Castrol Supra. What a loving revelation. How are Tamiya kits so good? As far as doing other subject matters, I did 3 1:72 F-16s and they were a lot of fun. There's something about the Falcon that I just really like and the kits were great builds.

The Locator posted:I don't know how true it is, but my understanding of the crazy number of scales in wooden ships is the 'box scale' thing. They had one standard size of box, and every ship was scaled for the longest parts to fit in that size box. It's only fairly recently that some manufacturers have settled on a scale and built all their models to that scale with 1/64 being the most popular. Victory models started making most of their ships in this scale (some larger ships got their own scale), and other more modern/newer companies chose the same scale for theirs also. That is such an insane reason "What the hell are we supposed to do? Make the box BIGGER?!"

Hell of a start, dude! The rust/mud/general crustiness on the fender flares look great. Your idea for a rusty basecoat in the bed and then sanding back a color coat is a great idea. Use a nice fine sandpaper when you knock back the blue and I think it'll turn out really nice. You can do similar things with different types of paint and appropriate thinners as well, but I know you're currently* limited to your Vallejo selection. Having built nearly exclusively automotive models, I'll tell you now that you will be your harshest critic. You'll find things like "ah, I could have done this differently" or "that didn't work like I thought it would" and stuff like that, but if you can remember those thoughts on the next build, you'll be happier with the results. Keep it up! *If you have any fun at all with this build, that will change.

I've been working on a custom classic monster truck hauler setup, using the new International Transtar tractor (amazing build, the tooling is new and instructions wonderful), an old Revell Nascar Racing Team hauler I got off ebay (not so nice of a kit), and then I combined a USA-1 repop Coca Cola monster truck kit with a 78 Ford body to build the monster (I have a bunch of r/c monster trucks I use this paint scheme on). I'm creating a diorama of what it would look like if I had owned a monster truck racing team in the 1980's, so I'm going to be putting it in front of an old arena. All this stuff is dope. I know exactly what you mean with the AMT comment, too. Built a few Tamiya kits and then suffered through an AMT GT500. Good God what a slog.

Friend posted:I don't know how y'all have the patience for some of this but I salute you. First but hopefully not last! As corny as it sounds, every model you build is a learning experience. "XYZ thing is tricky - maybe there's a better way to do that. ABC technique worked well, but I think I can do it a little differently to get an even better effect." It's easy to get discouraged with some of this stuff, but don't. Maybe try a new technique on each model you build. You're already digging into some weathering so maybe expand on that if it interests you. Grab (or make!) some washes and start slopping those around and I think you'll be surprised with the results. For a little help with decals, grab some of this stuff: http://www.microscale.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=MI-2. Paint that on after you get your decals in place and it will essentially melt the decal to the part. That will help it both stick more permanently and conform it to the underlying part. Then maybe once you get a few more kits built, your confidence will be up and you can find something to match your grandpa's truck. https://www.megahobby.com/categories/model-trucks/trucks-and-trailers.html

Somebody up thread mentioned the Badger stick mixer and I'll second that one. I've been using that one for my Tamiya pots and it's been great. Helps me get the stuff that's settled to the bottom on older pots mixed back in with minimal effort. I avoided using it for a while as I didn't want to deal with cleanup, but I just give it a blast in the water cup and the run it against a paper towel and it cleans up fine.

I got some absurdly-fine sandpaper and actually bothered to do a coat of primer this time, but I'm not ready to buy an airbrush. Do I have any chance brush-painting the body and sanding it or should I just get a can of spray paint at home depot? Any tips on number of coats/how long to sand/etc. is hugely appreciated That old AMT kit? I haven't built that kit, but having built some re-released older AMTs, I'll say this: please don't let it turn you off of modelling altogether. For painting the body, definitely pick up some spray paint. You can try brush painting (after thinning your paint), but I think it may just leave you frustrated. Give this a read for some tips. Your final finish probably won't come out like his (mine never do), but there's some good tips in here. http://www.italianhorses.net/Tutorials/PerfectPaint/paint.htm I would also recommend warming your spray cans. Pop them in a bucket or sink of nice warm water for a bit before spraying.

I can just purchase gloss paints and convert them to different sheens instead of having to buy gloss, semi-gloss, flat variants of the same color. It's pretty handy stuff.
