Can anyone recommend a decent airbrush in the $60-80 range? Just the airbrush itself I already have a compressor. Preferably with like a .4 or .5 needle. I only do car models and it's mostly for acrylic paints but I've been dabbling in alclad lacquers lately.

I've got a Paasche VL that's been a workhorse for years. I got the kit with the 3 needles and I just leave the big one in all the time. I'm pretty sure you can pick that kit up for the top end of your range and I've been super happy with mine.

Very well done on this, I'm not sure I could ever imagine attempting such a complicated livery. And the 240ZG looks fantastic too, you may have convinced me to pick one up for myself once 'the pile' has subsided somewhat.

You can almost hear the angry tears of motorsports governing bodies. :allears: R31 or R35 next?

I've completely finished my Pz.IV F now and I did a very simple paint job on a Tamiya Pz.II F/G for the 50th anniversary. (As well as a tiny papercraft KV-1 I found in a magazine)

With these and a half done Tiger, the shelf was starting to look somewhat Teutonic though so I wanted to get something a little less politically charged. What I ended up with was the FineMolds Type 61 and the amazing Tamiya R32 GT-R.

I chose the GT-R because I actually used to have the same model before and despite being from 1989 I think it may be one of the best sports car models Tamiya have ever released. It was my first Tamiya car model and completely ruined everything I bought afterwards for me.

The Type 61 though I didn't really know much about beforehand. I was interested in getting a FineMolds kit because I hadn't tried them before and being an all Japanese brand it seemed like a fairly safe buy, but it turns out it's actually a pretty interesting subject. It's Japan's first post-war tank and it was objectively out of date by the time it was released. They shared information with the Western Bloc though, so they knew it was under spec and they wanted to make something better but US sanctions meant they had been unable to produce military equipment for around 10 years and heavy industries had atrophied as a result so this tank was literally their only option if they didn't want to rely on imports.

The kit itself is fantastic on detail. Every little rivet, grab handle and mystery pokey outey bit is accounted for and the thickness on some of the parts is just completely impractical. Like I'm surprised they managed to get the tiny pieces out of the mold without breaking anything. Unfortunately the fit on the larger pieces isn't as good. It appears that they don't have slide molds so the hull is all long flat panels with a brace in the middle, so even a normal amount of in-box warpage makes things a pain to get straight without any gaps. Overall it was a fairly stressful build but the results should be very good.

There's actually a different R34, an R35, a 350Z, and a Primera in the Tamiya Calsonic collection. Will I do the rest of them? Eh, maybe eventually. For now, I've got a bit of a crapkit in the form of a '69 Torino that I still need to button up and put in the case.

I've done 2 versions of their R32 kit (NISMO custom edition and the Calsonic) and they're both based on that base kit that you bought. It is indeed a wonderful kit like most Tamiya fare.

So I started working on a Revell Germany Shelby Cobra but the front suspension was vague and annoying so I tucked it back in the box and broke out the Fujimi 190e Evo II to work on that. Instructions are 'eh' and the fit is kind of annoying. Tucked it back in the box and finally cracked open the Tamiya Castrol Supra. What a loving revelation. How are Tamiya kits so good?

As far as doing other subject matters, I did 3 1:72 F-16s and they were a lot of fun. There's something about the Falcon that I just really like and the kits were great builds.

I don't know how true it is, but my understanding of the crazy number of scales in wooden ships is the 'box scale' thing. They had one standard size of box, and every ship was scaled for the longest parts to fit in that size box. It's only fairly recently that some manufacturers have settled on a scale and built all their models to that scale with 1/64 being the most popular. Victory models started making most of their ships in this scale (some larger ships got their own scale), and other more modern/newer companies chose the same scale for theirs also.

That is such an insane reason :psyduck:

Hell of a start, dude!

The rust/mud/general crustiness on the fender flares look great. Your idea for a rusty basecoat in the bed and then sanding back a color coat is a great idea. Use a nice fine sandpaper when you knock back the blue and I think it'll turn out really nice. You can do similar things with different types of paint and appropriate thinners as well, but I know you're currently* limited to your Vallejo selection. Having built nearly exclusively automotive models, I'll tell you now that you will be your harshest critic. You'll find things like "ah, I could have done this differently" or "that didn't work like I thought it would" and stuff like that, but if you can remember those thoughts on the next build, you'll be happier with the results. Keep it up!

Taking a break from military stuff and working on some other projects. I've been working on a custom classic monster truck hauler setup, using the new International Transtar tractor (amazing build, the tooling is new and instructions wonderful), an old Revell Nascar Racing Team hauler I got off ebay (not so nice of a kit), and then I combined a USA-1 repop Coca Cola monster truck kit with a 78 Ford body to build the monster (I have a bunch of r/c monster trucks I use this paint scheme on). I'm creating a diorama of what it would look like if I had owned a monster truck racing team in the 1980's, so I'm going to be putting it in front of an old arena.

I am also working on an AMT Sandkat sand rail as well as an AMT Blazing Bison pulling tractor, all of which I'm painting in the same color scheme to make them look like they are part of a team.

It is amazing what it's like going from Tamiya and Takom military products back to AMT car kits- the AMT stuff just builds like poo poo comparatively. I know many of these are re-pops from long ago, but good grief. At least the Transtar is a killer build. Having built several semi tractors and loving that genre of modeling, if you have ever thought of building one, do the IH Transtar!

All this stuff is dope.

I know exactly what you mean with the AMT comment, too. Built a few Tamiya kits and then suffered through an AMT GT500. Good God what a slog.

I don't know how y'all have the patience for some of this but I salute you.

As promised, here's my first model ever, a 1980ish Jeep Honcho. Paint sucks for a miriad of reasons and decals are delicate as heck huh? One just plum fell off of a light while I was showing my wife, not to mention the license plate that lost a corner (which she wisely suggested I cover with a bunch of mud)

3D printed truck nutz have been distributed by the way. If you want your own, pm me. I only require something small and/or flat in return.

I think we're supposed to be best friends? I settled for my jeep honcho model because it was cheap, but I specifically wanted to do a cab-over to match my grandpa's he used to deliver propane in the 70s, and settled on this because I could sorta make it match my blue Tacoma. That looks awesome.

Edit: noooo I don't want to snipe this thread

First but hopefully not last! As corny as it sounds, every model you build is a learning experience. "XYZ thing is tricky - maybe there's a better way to do that. ABC technique worked well, but I think I can do it a little differently to get an even better effect." It's easy to get discouraged with some of this stuff, but don't. Maybe try a new technique on each model you build. You're already digging into some weathering so maybe expand on that if it interests you. Grab (or make!) some washes and start slopping those around and I think you'll be surprised with the results.

For a little help with decals, grab some of this stuff: http://www.microscale.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=MI-2. Paint that on after you get your decals in place and it will essentially melt the decal to the part. That will help it both stick more permanently and conform it to the underlying part.

Then maybe once you get a few more kits built, your confidence will be up and you can find something to match your grandpa's truck. https://www.megahobby.com/categories/model-trucks/trucks-and-trailers.html

Somebody up thread mentioned the Badger stick mixer and I'll second that one. I've been using that one for my Tamiya pots and it's been great. Helps me get the stuff that's settled to the bottom on older pots mixed back in with minimal effort. I avoided using it for a while as I didn't want to deal with cleanup, but I just give it a blast in the water cup and the run it against a paper towel and it cleans up fine.

That old AMT kit? I haven't built that kit, but having built some re-released older AMTs, I'll say this: please don't let it turn you off of modelling altogether.

For painting the body, definitely pick up some spray paint. You can try brush painting (after thinning your paint), but I think it may just leave you frustrated. Give this a read for some tips. Your final finish probably won't come out like his (mine never do), but there's some good tips in here. http://www.italianhorses.net/Tutorials/PerfectPaint/paint.htm I would also recommend warming your spray cans. I run a lot of x-18 through my airbrush and it comes out drat near identical to ts-29. Just brushing it on tends to come out glossier, though.

I don't see why you couldn't. Try 2:1 color:flat and see what happens. If it's too flat just hit it with some nose grease :v:.

I wonder if this X-21 stuff might be kind of useful if it works well. I can just purchase gloss paints and convert them to different sheens instead of having to buy gloss, semi-gloss, flat variants of the same color.

It's pretty handy stuff. I've built a few kits that call for it being mixed with gloss paints that aren't available in flat versions.

Update: I loving hate hate hate this model and the garbage cheap airbrush I got on amazon. Nothing fits on the model, and as for the sprayer, I'd get a more even coverage if I filled my mouth with paint and went "spppptttthhh." I had a whole long paragraph typed out but I will spare the thread. Just needed to vent a little.

The cycle continues.

Think of it this way: nowhere to go but up!
