Pretty sure the turntable is expensive because they got Eno to put his name on them. I can kind of understand that, I spent too much on a UK first pressing of Before and after Science so I could get a set of the art prints it came with to frame.

My wife is bringing home her late father's ELAC Miracord 10H. Not sure what kind of condition it's in, and she's said it probably needs a new cartridge at a minimum, but anyone have any resources on this or if it's even worth getting up and running? We're currently using an Audio-Technica which is fine, but looking at pics, this is at least a little more interesting looking.

Looks like a nice TT, you'll want to check a few things

- Stylus, may need to replace it
- rotational speed and consistency, you can get test strobe sheets to print and check it
- check the cartridge alignment, also using printable protracter sheets
-check the auto start and return function
-check and adjust the turntable weight and anti-skate force, you *can* buy a specialized scale for it, or just balance it by eye and follow some online guides on how to do it without the scale
-will you be using the record changer function, where you can load up multiple records at the same time? It's more of a classical music set thing than anything else.

The sound becomes far more detailed, more natural, more analog. Imaging improves in vast magnitudes. Depth, placement, size, space and delineation suddenly appear like a high end DAC was rendering them. Everything has texture, dimensionality and emotion.

I'm picturing that guy in my head, looking at this equipment setup + that link at the bottom and I just legitimately feel sad.

Nice EMI / EMC reduction on his page... but zero effect on the actual picture quality and of course replacing a switching mode supply with a giant loving linear power supply will do that.

e: https://www.xymox1.com/Resumex/Press/Valin_Review.pdf from the bottom of that page... good bit of nostalgia.

From the Information sheet for the Switch X

techno babble snake oil salesman posted:

The switch X has features to vastly lower packet noise and jitter that originates from your network that
pollutes your audio/video streams and induces jitter in your gear. EVERY device on your WHOLE house network broadcasts various packets that are vital to running your house network. These packets are sent to EVERY device on the system including your audio gear. This barrage of broadcast packets is forcefully injected into your audio streaming and then picked up by your audio devices where the
network chip, bus and cpu of your NAS and Streaming DAC pause and examine these packets. These
packets cause jitter in the stream itself and cause jitter in your audio device network interface & CPU.

The Switch X provides a island free of the distractions of city life on your main house network. It does
this by creating a isolated remote island cut off from the world. The island has internet but is isolated from the rest of your house network. Devices on the island cannot talk to the house network and all the noise from the house network is blocked. In tech terms it is a NATed space with its own DHCP.

This is critical in audio streaming as only audio packets should be on the audio networking
