Nowadays there's a plug-in for that but I always thought that was hilarious [if true]. Depeche Mode actually did do something similar during the recording of Black Celebration. "We played the entire recording through a PA system broadcasting it through the entire building and then recorded it from the other side of the building to pickup the distortion."
