their new song has such a sick breakdown at the end. but for as good as they are, i could never binge listen to them bc it gets a bit samey.

curious to know what they sound like live

Ya, I loved their first EP, but never got super into their full length. Turns out, I only want about 10-15min worth of That END Sound at a time.

Loud and samey. But in the good way.

End was in fact loud and samey. Better live than on recording imo.

Misery Signals was loving amazing. I've been waiting 16 years to see them.

Comeback Kid was great.

I only listened to Norma Jean's "Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child", "O' God, the Aftermath", and "Redeemer" and skipped....their other five albums to listen to this

It reminds me of maybe either ogod, or redeemer, and it's a little more sing-songy than I usually want now, it still sounds groovy. I love it

of those albums I think I'd probably say Bless > redeemer > o' god

but I can't remember the albums too clearly

edit: I'm going back and listening to Bless the Martyr and I can't believe this album is 20 years old and is still as dope as it was back then. I still remember exactly the face my friend Patrick made when he was excited about it and didn't want to tell me about this band or Armor for Sleep because he thought I was going to brag about it to everyone and then it would get popular. Oh, highschool "if it's popular I don't want to listen to it" drama...

edit2: going further back, listening to Luti-Kriss, it's quite hard to find all a band's eps and poo poo. It does sound almost like melodical death metal, vaguely. (black smith)

you went an album further with norma jean than i did. bless the martyr was like a holy grail album for my friends and me back in the day. i remember being pissed that they changed singers/direction with o god but a few years later i warmed up to it and i go back and forth which album i prefer. never listened to anything more than a song or two from anything else. spoiler alert i dont even think the song i just posted is really all that good i just wanted to share with the thread lol.

also funny you mention armor for sleep bc they just put out a new song in idk how many years. the song isn't good tho. bummer

I'm going through Norma Jean's discography (best I can since it's hard to find all their albums at a high bit-rate, 128kbps sucks dick) as sequentially as I can

So far Bless > Aftermath > throwing myself > redeemer > anti-mother

Robots 3 Humans 0 is so far the best song on the anti-mother album but it's not norma jean

"death of the anti mother" is more norma jean's thing but it's still kind of blasé

edit: this album was :sigh: until the last track on the album, "And there will be a swarm of hornets"

at least Meridional is next, hopefully that's less boring

edit2: first track was eh, second track, "The anthem of the angry brides" is much better. deathbed atheist is eh. Bastardizer better. A media friendly turn for the worse good. Blood burner good. rest of the album was meh.

edit 3: Wrongdoers is better but uninspired and generic
edit 4: sun dies, blood moon is great, but previous comment remains the same.
edit 5: The last song on the Wrongdoers album ends on a Sludgy/droney note and that itself is loving fantastic and I absolutely love it.

Norma Jean's great, one of the most consistent bands out there. Only album that didn't do much for me is The Anti-Mother. Meridional doesn't get enough love IMO, I seem to be the only one that thinks it's maybe their best. Everything since then has been pretty interchangeable but that's not a bad thing, the sound they've settled into works for them and there aren't many bands that do it as well as they do.

This is basically my exact thoughts. I don't LOVE them, but I know what I'm getting and it's usually gonna be at least okay. Meridional is probably the album I've listened to the most, although I think every album has at least a handful of good tracks

New single from Architects with an album out in Oct. I didn't hate last year's album (certainly didn't love it either, but it had some tracks/moments that were okay), but this track is hard for even me to defend. I did like the lead single, when we were young, so I'm not giving up on the album entirely, but I can already feel myself skipping this new one more often than not

I used to like Norma Jean a lot more than I do now, but Redeemer is one of the only albums that I remember hating on first listen that I randomly went back to a while later and was like "Wait how the gently caress did I not love this it's amazing?"

There are plenty of albums I have changed my mind about, but this was already in a genre I liked and I remember truly thinking it was unlistenable the first time, no idea how.

When I was a youngin (17-18), at some show I got a Relapse sampler CD. Every month or two I'd give it a listen.

Well the first time I heard a track by some band with a stuipd name - "The Dillinger Escape Plan" - boy, that was garbage. Just loving noise, goddamn worthless!

Then as I gradually listened to more and more mathy / complex type bands, one day I was popping through it again, and was like "oh I can understand this now. This is awesome, why did I hate this?".
