I got a hold of "Resurrected" by Built Upon Frustration. Didn't think it would be good as The Book of Mourning, but I think it's even better. Track it down if you like dumb, heavy-as-poo poo hardcore. You should probably just listen to the song and ignore the video.

Dunno if anybody here likes them, but It Prevails has posted a song from their upcoming EP. If you haven't heard them, they play mid-paced, very melodic metalcore, sort of Misery Signals-esque at times, but more straightforward and with the typical "overcoming hardships" lyrics. Nothing groundbreaking, but I've always found them to be pretty solid.

I really need to listen the new Ion D. I'm aware that I'm in a very small minority, but I actually preferred Minus the Herd over their previous stuff. It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up. The song titles are throwing me off a little though. Especially No Care Ever, which is a reference to the Lambgoat message board?

This is a guilty pleasure, but anybody who's into modern toughguy stuff like Acacia Strain, Bury Your Dead, etc. might like Confession. It's big dumb stupid metalcore but they keep up a melodic undercurrent through most of the album, similar to For the Fallen Dreams. (This is even more embarassing because they recently released a cover of Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit. With Fred Durst on backing vocals.) On a slightly less embarrassing note, anybody who hasn't checked out Psalms of Sheol by Disembodied should do so immediately. It's a collection of remastered material from some EPs and stuff and the guitar tone is just incredibly thick and heavy. It's almost weird to hear 90s-style metalcore sound so good.

More 90s-style metalcore with thick-rear end production. Definitely recommended if you're into Disembodied and... Sepultura? I get a Chaos A.D. vibe from the guitars and drums. For some reason the mix sounds different on the Youtube video though, on the album the vocals aren't so far out in front. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvRxP6fnmfk

Speaking of metalcore bands and their love affair with Swedish guitar leads, Gideon is a newer band with a couple of choruses that sound like they they were lifted from a mid-2000s melodic death metal band. I imagine them being in a song by Sonic Syndicate or something.

I stumbled upon this band who embarrassingly stole their name from one of the greatest video games of all time but when I actually listened to their tunes I found myself digging it quite a bit. Heavy stuff. Not bad, but yeah it is kind of embarrassing that even the lyrics to at least one song are about the game. quote:Led to the massive shrine of worship at the center of the region. "wander" carries with him a body wrapped in a cloak which he laid upon the altar in the shrine. removing the cloak off the body of a maiden named mono. she is revealed. a moment later several shadow like creatures with humanoid forms appear and prepare to attack. he dismisses them with a wave of his ancient sword. after vanquishing the shadow creatures, the voice of a disembodied entity echoes from above. he requests to return her soul, and acheive the impossible. The 16 idols lining the temples hall must all be destroyed. Despite a warning and a threat of consequence. He sets out and searches the land for the colossi, and eliminate them. Sprouting horns he makes a meal of the lord emon. Left with the taste the lords hemorages, he sets out to bring forth and slay the final colossus. Bridges shattering behind blazing hooves at a loss for his companion. Victory! He suffers the same fate as his recent foe, only to be reborn and begin the cycle once more. We've achieved the impossible. After what seemed like a lifetime of treachery, the world is once again safe from the likes of deceit. The righteous prevail.

I was going to ask for recommendations for the best, say five to ten albums, but then I realized the problem is that the pinnacle albums for each genre aren't always the most accessible. As I Lay Dying is a good starting place, so you're already on the right track. You'll probably enjoy All That Remains too; I'd recommend The Fall of Ideals and Overcome for All That Remains albums, though you might actually prefer one of their earlier albums, This Darkened Heart, if you're coming from a more traditional metal background. Here's a few quick suggestions to get you acquainted with each of the subgenres (sub-subgenres?) of metalcore: Melodic stuff: Misery Signals For the Fallen Dreams Hopesfall Toughguy/beatdown-type stuff: Bury Your Dead Emmure Oblige Deathcore: Despised Icon All Shall Perish Molotov Solution Misery Index (loosely deathcore, they're more death/grind, but they have a lot of crossover appeal and they're a hundred times more conceptually and lyrically advanced than most deathcore bands so whatever) Technical: Converge Cave In Botch Shai Hulud Old-school: Unbroken All Out War Lash Out bleedbackwards fucked around with this message at 23:00 on Feb 2, 2012 |

Well he's already heard of The Acacia Strain, and Whitechapel is alright but personally I don't listen to them much aside from one or two songs on each album. I think the three bands I listed are all better than Whitechapel, but they did play a pretty strong part in starting the whole deathcore movement, so here's a Whitechapel song.

rxcowboy posted:Newbie question: Honestly I couldn't handle most of the "technical" bands you listed, at least not yet. I know that what they were playing was difficult, but Botch, Converge and Cave In were just too chaotic for me. Shai Hulud sounded almost nothing like that to me, maybe it's the vocals being a little cleaner? I don't understand why you put them in the technical section. Shai Hulud is still pretty technical, but more so rhythmically than anything else. They do tend to stay at a midpaced groove more than the other bands, and that was one of their more straightforward songs. If you like them but you're turned off by too much chaos (as am I), you'd probably also like It Prevails and Life in Your Way. Cave In has a fun history: the song I linked was from one of their earlier albums, then they went all soft and dreamy, then they went hard again () for an album, and now they're at kind of at a midway point between the styles. You might really like their newer stuff. Also, the Converge song I linked is actually one of their less chaotic songs.

I was relieved to hear that the guitar tone from Heavy Breathing is intact on the new Black Breath. It was absolutely massive on the slower songs like I Am Beyond and the breakdown on Black Sin. Solve et Coagula is a good album though it gets a bit abrasive after awhile. I remember when the Secret came out with their first album Luce, which was somewhat generic early/mid-2000s technical metalcore. But they actually had coherent songs and some recurring musical themes throughout that album that made it easier to digest than most of the spazzy bands that were playing around that time.
