I have had problems lately with all my bird photos looking like poo poo somehow, today I tried shooting for about an hour in the morning before work and wow does morning light look better than midday sun

They are insanely common in the midwest. Well they're common all over NA but you can't throw a rock without hitting one in Illinois. If you're ever out there find a local prairie preserve and you'll see dozens.

im surprised that doesn't put you to sleep like counting sheep

they're loving everywhere up here in the Greater Toronto Area.
Usually one or two of them get pretty ornery and attack people and draw a couple news articles every year

I'm over in Edmonton and they're all over the place, and in suburban neighbourhoods because developers love to build man-made ponds. I'm always looking for Yellow-headed Blackbirds, but the Red-winged outnumber them by like 100:1 around here

Cropped to hell because the moment I tried to get closer he assumed I wanted to eat him, but here's a little Black-Backed(?) Wagtail out on the lawn of a fancy apartment block. I've checked this place a few times recently and it there's usually a couple of these or some Starlings out looking for worms in the grass.

(It's almost definitely a 'haku-sekirei' as it's know here but the specifics are apparently a little difficult to pin down https://kantorilode.weebly.com/white-and-black-backed-wagtails.html)

I'm not sure to post here or the gear thread, but I got the itch after a decade to get back into birding, and I'm looking into a budget camera setup to get going again.

When I last took bird pics, it was a 60D and a Canon 100-400, and that setup did just fine for what I shot. I always wanted a 7D back in the day, and these days a body on ebay is super reasonable. How dumb is it to buy a 14 year old DSLR? (or I guess looking at prices, a 7D mk2 isn't too expensive either).

jarlywarly
Aug 31, 2018
DSLR prices are low and getting lower because new Canon R series mirrorless cameras have basically magic eye tracking AF which makes things a lot easier. A 7Dmk2 is a great point to jump back in if you don't want that tracking AF.

My progression through the canon camera bodies during the last 12+ years has been T2i -> 60D -> 7D2 -> R6. It's really about your budget but the 7d2 is going to feel pretty solid after the 60D (assuming you don't need the flip-out screen for something). Add a used first gen Tamron 150-600 and you might be under 1k for a great wildlife combo. Or do you still have the 100-400?

Also the high ISO performance. Whoops I'm at 12800ISO? No problem.
